In an interview, Brittney revealed how low budget they have to go for their videos. One early video had only a $500 CAD budget and they had to add a big pack of bacon, which put them over budget. So Canadian. Ya, they ate it afterward. If I remember correctly, Nightwish spent €500,000 on their music video while UTA spent $10,000 CAD on their latest one. I guess it's up to us fans to move UTA into the big time.

Stan Rogers Death: "Rogers died alongside 22 other passengers most likely of smoke inhalation on June 2, 1983, while traveling on Air Canada Flight 797 (a McDonnell Douglas DC-9) after performing at the Kerrville Folk Festival. There were initially no visible flames, and after attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, smoke filled the cabin. Upon landing, the plane's doors were opened, allowing the five crew and 18 of the passengers to escape, but approximately 60 to 90 seconds into the evacuation the oxygen rushing in from outside caused a flash fire. Rogers had initially been one of the passengers to escape, but he at some point re-entered the plane to assist in the effort to help others escape."

    • @scottmcintyre2809
      @scottmcintyre2809 3 роки тому +3

A big reason so many people dies was because the smoke made visibility in the cabin basically nil, it was the accident that lead to all the extra floor lighting in current aircraft along with requirements that the passengers and crew can evacuate a plane in less than 90s. Rogers, IIRC, was found just inside the door and a number of the survivors reported that the only reason they got out was because he just stood there in the smoke shouting for people to follow the sound of his voice.

This is where my nerdy audio engineer side pops out.
Yes, you're right on the reverb not masking the voice, and this is because of one of the most overlooked and ignored yet most important parameters of the reverb: pre-delay. With more pre-delay you get the psychoacoustic effect of listening to the voice really close to you and in a bigger room. This is becausein a real setting it's so close to you that you listen to the original sound first and the reflection takes a while to bounce off a wall or surface and come back to you. If there's no pre-delay, the reverb starts at the same time as the voice, "masking" it. This gives the illusion of being in the same large room but much further away, because the original sound and the reflections will reach your ear (almost) at the same time.
It baffles me how most amateur and medium level engineers ignore this. Reverb should be used for depth, the same way as panning is used for left and right positioning. If you want reverb merely as an effect without adding the illusion of depth and without it creating a "soundscape" as some call it, you should use a plate reverb, a spring reverb or a non-linear reverb, since those don't imitate space, but devices.
Seriously thinking on starting a channel to analyze all of these songs from a technical perspective, to explain why it sounds how it sounds...

I was an amateur soundtech at some conventions over the last 20 years but i did mainly discussion-panels and theatre/musical - production (fans doing stuff for fans, most couldn't sing if their life depended on it, but the dancing went well, most of the time, until someone fell over a monitor and off the stage into the crowd...); live music was done by a more experienced friend, so i did main stage-hand for that.

Swede here. I only discovered Stan Rogers because we used to do a bunch of pirate parties and some friends used to sing Quilty's version of Barret's Privateers (which is a cover of a version some guy did from what he pieced together from people singing in pubs believing it was an old traditional folk song). I looked into it and found Stan Rogers and the man was a damn treasure. There aren't a lot of live performances of him online tho which is a crying shame.

    • @annacooksey7276
      @annacooksey7276 Рік тому

I absolutely love Stan, too! My mom saw him in concert and had a story about him flirting a little! Barrett's Privateers is s classic, but I only really like to hear one version on my playlist. There was a live version that was notable because he lost his breath halfway through abd had to take a break. The crowd pitched in and there was a really funny crowd interaction caught on tape. It's a very spirited version of the song! Stan always sounded better live.

The video is better when you realize that the story is basically the movie "The One", where a Jet Li goes around to different parallel universes killing all the other Jet Lis because every time he does, the power of all the remaining Jet Lis gets increased Highlander style. So in this case, an evil Brittney is going around killing all the other Brittneys so that she can just pick whatever universe she wants to be in.
And yes, evil Brittney won in the end.

A little piece of history, the Northwest Passage was early North American settlers attempt to find a waterway connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific to make the journey from Europe to Asia & India easier. It currently exists just north of Canada and past Alaska. Many originally believed the Great Lakes was this waterway.

As someone with no musical education or skill, but a huge love for everything UtA put into their tracks, seeing how much their music affects you (who does know what they're doing) is very pleasing. I would love it if you react to The Wind That Shapes The Land by Unleash The Archers. It's another one of their masterpieces, currently my joint favourite from them with Dreamcrusher and Time Stands Still, but beyond that it takes you on a journey. From start to finish, it's constantly changing and evolving and feels like they have perfectly blended the best parts of 3 or 4 songs together seamlessly. Part of me hates that they didn't make one of their epic story time videos to go with it, but on the other hand the lack of visual stimulus forces you to really focus on the sounds and it's so worth it.

Hey, love your break-downs. I was playing guitar on omegle the other day and found myself talking to a kid who was playing eric clapton on guitar, but had never written his own music. he had skills - but when I pressed him on playing something original, he had little riff which was neat. I found myself talking to him, and realised I was talking about build ups, pace, etc, and slow downs and thought of you. And then he tried something new, and made something with a bit more substance. Anyways, keep it up - dig it!

Couple places where skipping a few beats would have really enhanced the impact. Second criticism - I REALLY wish we could have seen more of her singing / the band performing on the video. Decent vid, but for this, I really wanted to see her leaning into the mic, and the guys rending the guitars and slamming the drums.

IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
    NORTHWEST PASSAGE
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there it was said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way
Like them I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea

That is indeed beautiful scenery. We usually have to fight over the keys for who gets to drive. Used to be a favourite for us motorcyclists till the local constabulary errr "dis-incentivised" it.

Chase, congratulations on the 17k, very deserved.
I'd take my chances on four Britneys, but hey, if Avantasia invites her sometime, we'll see something similar...
The undisputed kings of concept albums are still Rhapsody of Fire. If, like me, you missed when they made their peak run, they're mandatory. 🔥💪👌😁
I also recomended André Matos a bunch of times because there's a teasing style to his music and his performance, almost between Devin and Tuomas... don't be put off because the official video has so few views, everyone uses an older, unofficial one with 2.8M.
Cheers and thanks for the Sunday vid!

I would like to second Luis, you should definitely check out Avantasia. Tobias Sammet formed Avantasia in 1999 as a studio project to create some kind of metal opera. Most of their songs feature guest singers and musicians from all over the world, people Tobias had always wanted to work with.
Among those are names like Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Dee Snider, Shaorn den Adel (Within Temptation), Marco Hietala (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Jon Oliva (Savatage), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Biff Byford (Saxon) Michael Kiske (Helloween), Bob Catley (Mangum), David DeFeis (Virgin Steele), Candice Night, Amanda Somerville and many more.
Suggested songs are "Let the Storm Descend Upon You" (feat. Jorn Lande, Ronnie Atkins, ), "The Raven Child" (feat. Jorn Lande and Hansi Kürsch), "Dying for an Angel" (feat Klaus Meine), "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose".
Their live performances are amazing - concerts lasting 3.5h are normal for them.

Thanks Chase. Another great song from UTA.
However, not the only recent cover from them. Last year they did another fantastic cover of a song from a legendary 70s Canadian rock band called Tease.
Here's an idea. Do a double reaction. To the original song back to back with UTA's cover. It's a great 70s style rock song and UTA really do it justice with a brilliant updated sound that is true to the original.
Here are the links to the original first and then the cover

Keep this up and we're going to have to petition them to grant you Canadian citizenship. Maybe make this version our national anthem too. Thanks for this one, that was great. If you're interested at all, would it be possible to have a look at another Canadian band named Protest The Hero, the song "From the Sky"? They have been around for a long while but just dropped a new album in June, progressive metal kind of in your wheelhouse I think. Thank-you sir for the consideration and the excellent content and analysis, as always.

I think you are ready to face Arjen Anthony Lucassen. You know now how great Tuomas is and how amazing songs he can write. Arjen is the same level of composing songs as Tuomas and he is like Andrew Loydd Webber when it comes to Shows and stage and theatre.
Arjen's band is call AYREON and it has started in 1995 as a concept album, scifi story, it was so great and succesful he continued with dozen albums now, he created whole "universe", every album since then is adding to that storyline. With multiple singers each time. I would recommend to start you journey with song (only 11 singers there, with a small surprise for you) :)

Narrowly beating Letterkenny and Francis Pegahmagabow .... and yes, thats a clumsy lead-in to ask for some Sabaton, Chase.
