My father used to send wheat straw to a UK power station to burn in its boilers. Now that power station burns wood biomass pellets produced in the USA and collects subsidy from the UK Government. Converting cellulose to ethanol rather than just burning it directly is surely an energy transformation step that reduces overall energy efficiency.
Producers would lose money and stopping producing ethanol without government subsidies. So why aren't ethanol plants fired by ethanol? Returns only 47% of the energy takes to produce it (hardly a "renewable" energy"). Hazardous air emissions increase when the emissions from the production process are not blindly ignored.
This is what will save our planet.
