Hey glad you’re back! With new gear! And me I got a cheap, new-to-me 100w Fender Mustang III, about 12 years old lol, and a cable to connect my iPhone to AUX for practice and backing tracks. I’m in practice heaven. Old gear can still be awesome. Let’s go!

I bought a $5 mic from Walmart to run into my ancient Fostex 4-Track CASSETTE recorder. I hung the mic 3 inches from a Danelectro Nifty Fifty and recorded a $300 Jay Turser resonator guitar into it and my roommate at the time who had roadied for bands like Aerosmith, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails didn't believe me when I played him the tape.
I know a lot of it was luck in the combination, but I barely believed it myself.

Torrefied quartersawn flame maple necks with only a tru-oil finish are a game changer. My two favorite guitars have them now. Moving forward that’s all I’ll have. I was always a rosewood guy previously for a lot of the reasons Mick talks about (sticky feel of finished necks). Tru-oil solves those issues. You can feel even the most subtle pick variations in your hand on the neck. It’s a great connection between hands.

Man, my dog walking duties always cut in about half way through these days. Thank you for commenting about sample size/bit rate and the Apollo. After making some mistakes, I now understand how some interfaces, such as Apollo, address latency. I just dove into recording a few months ago, blindly, and hit a submerged rock first thing. Thinking it was all about powerful computers and thunderbolt interfaces, I got one of each. After a bunch of mistakes, I now understand the problem much better and would have gone with the Apollo or Heritage Audio (for Neve fans) or RME. Audio recording is such an incredible blast but around every corner there's something new to learn, and fast. My journey so far has been characterized by the dude constantly broken down by the roadside, debating whether to read a manual or pray to UA-cam. But then the deep internal nerd in me gets to fool around with the Waves Abbey Road collection and the geeking out couldn't be more fun. When things work properly...
(Oh my goodness! What a big dummy I am. I tuned 30 minutes late this morning and missed the talk about the interface with the X-twin for the headphone out. My Apollo question and context and was totally ignorant of the show's intro remarks!)

The Blackmagic ATEM does NOT feature balanced inputs so going from a mixer to an ATEM is going to cause noise + level issues. The Radial Pro-Iso Stereo XLR Isolator and Converter fixes the balancing issue and provides a clean and quiet signal for your live stream / recording into ATEM! Its the only thing that solved my problem coming out of a mixer and into an ATEM

Great show last Friday, but that brings to mind something I’d love to hear you guys address. What options are there for dealing with cables from the pedal board back to the back line? There can potentially be a lot of cords, Here are some that come to mind.
    Power
    Acoustic Guitar
Electric Guitar Amp could have a few with reverb tremolo and channel switching.
    Wet Dry or stereo
    4 cable method.
I could go on & on, but you get the idea.

Don't know about theaters in the UK but here in 'merica they are soo loud. I've been wearing ear plugs for years when going to the movies. When my boys were young, they couldn't deal. Luckily theaters offer a sensory friendly option - house lights don't go completely dark and the sound is not so loud. And yes, Welcome to Wrexam is awesome. And season 2, man, every other episode is a tear jerker.

idea for a show: how does one big amp compare to two smaller ones? Can you get that "authority" from a higher headroom (50/100) amp from two smaller (15-22) amps? How different does it feel between a bigger amp and two smaller amps?

Hey mick and Dan how you guys doing ? Love the show. I have a question about when you had Simon on the show with the juggler. I just purchased one and I was wondering when you went in front of the amp do you remember what your settings were. If you remember can you let me know. I took a picture of the settings you had on the juggler but I don’t what you had on the amp. I just love when Simon is on the show. He’s awesome. The pedals are great I have the harlot and the juggler. Juggler works great in the effects loop but I have my big sky going into my 68 bassman 50 amp so when when I run it into the effects loop on my solid state fender stage 100 amp it takes away the reverb. Should the juggler go last on my pedal board before the halo delay and my bigsky ? Cheers guys.

Hey Dan, just got to the bit about suggestions for a 'next-gen' Quartermaster (after 1:25:00). Something I could have used on my QMX6 is a TRS insert point between loops 3 and 4. Thus it could effectively become two QMX3s. I wanted to make a wet-dry rig on one relatively small 'board with a Humdinger between loops 3 and 4. In the end I went bigger! I got another 'board using a QMX4 along side my QMX6 'board. Happy days.

Yup action is LOUD, dialogue is whisper-quiet, and just about everything is filmed in the friggin’ dark. I tried watching that Star Wars Ahsoka series and it’s like Disney couldn’t afford lightbulbs. Brutal. Bring back a listenable, watchable balance!

@@ThatPedalShow in a fit of sad middle-aged nostalgia, I tried rewatching The X-Files last week, and 2 things stood out, 1, it was way, wayyy more violent and gory than I remember, surprisingly so for an American primetime show, and 2, they must have saved a lot of money by just shooting half the scenes in total darkness.

On the point about Ford’s hearing, I think the point Mick makes that the show is best when the musician is happiest is really key. If someone is happy plugging in direct with a mid-priced guitar, they won’t necessarily play better with more prestigious gear. However, those of us plagued by having had a mystical experience with old-fashioned will never be as happy in a compromised setting and thus will never play as well in that setting.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  2 місяці тому +2

It’s always a balance. If all you have is something ‘compromised’ you have to work past it and find a way to connect. Make the show about audience, not about your displeasure. Be in the moment of what you have, not what you don’t have. But if you can do the work to make sure that moment has the best chance possible before it happens, well that’s okay too. ;0)

People conplain about the movies and tv having inconsistent volume between dialogue and action being a recent thing, but I watched fellowship of the ring last night (more than 20 years old at this point) and that suffers the same way, the opening war scene was deafening. That film has a terrible sibilance problem too.
I think it might've always been a thing

Being a cheapskate I just replaced the daisy chains on my grab-and-go boards with some "power distribution" strips that take a USB C input power, have 6 x 9V DC outputs, plus a USB output. So I suppose you could theoretically chain them together and have the world's cheapest modular supply.
I am also using a Joyo rechargeable power supply coupled with a Mooer L6 Mk 2 switcher as part of my first foray into "let's stop the tap dancing" land, the other part being a board I rebuilt around a Joyo PXL-8 switcher.
I discovered a new truth about pedal boards: Ad a switcher and watch the size of your board double :)

Per:1:39:00> i low-class-van-toured for years and my les paul was always on the road, home in san antonio, home in new orleans, tuning was a problem everywhere (it is worth mentioning that i knew very little pre covid about guitar care). I gave up and started through Reverends entire catalogue. I settled on the cross cut. I haven't had to think about tuning at all on trips between san antonio and new orleans or san antonio and Nashville. Roasted necks on all the ones ive recorded with. Tuned up, did the thing. I dont know if its true, but im a believer.

On the, what would we do for more views. I know it's not a usual TPS thing, and lots of people do it, but I think it would be a hugely entertaining show if you both went to Anderton's and did a rig for a 1000/1500 quid episode. Having access to such high end gear, I'd love to see what you'd both pick on a budget, and why.

The Cranborne Camden EC2 might be a good add on to your Apollo 16. Because it's a great mono mic pre-amp, with colour options and you can always use that. But it's also a great headphone amp. Cranborne have the 500r8 too that you can use instead of a console. It's an interface, summing mixer, 500 enclosure and zero-latency mixer. You can pack it with 500 modules instead, more compact and probably cost you less than a similar quality mixer, especially if you have a brace of 500-series modules already.

Apropos: charges last week: I'm happy for you to keep my money, but would appreciate advice on what to do about a Hiwatt Custom 7 I picked up over Xmas. It is icepick clean, even with the volume and gain maxed out (plus the fatct I can dime it at all is a bit of a worry, given that I wouldn't get the AC4 or Supro Super before the flat windows start rattling. Does this sound like believable Hiwattness, or do I need to get it looked at? Have now tried jumping the inputs, it's still completely gritless. Also have a powerdriver-type thing to plug in as a next step.
Apropos the Nolan/Tenet sound effects: clearly the man has absolute contempt for whoever writes his dialogue. The "we mixed it for imax and you saw it in a small theatre" line is deeply crass; plus the fact he keeps making Tom Hardy speak through a mask to produce lousy wooly waffle is irksome as all hell. Everything up to the Dark Knight was great, though.
