there is another air vent in the park on the other side of the road where you started and one at the top of the hill behind what is now a CO-OP. The reason they are so large is that the shafts were dug first and then they would did the tunnel in each direction at the bottom of each shaft. The canal that you showed is the Birmingham High level. The canal through Netherton tunnel connects to the Birmingham low level otherwise known as the Birmingham main line.
I used to work in a aluminium foundry just up the road from Dudley Port in Oldbury which was right on the cut. I used to use the cut as it was the quickest route on push bike from oldbury to princes end then onto Bradley via road where I lived at the time I actually use to ride through those fields you mentioned on your Tipton then and now part 2 video at four in the morning even at that time it was dodgy. I do prefer the cut nearer to Tipton train station though 👍🏻
Thank you there is 2 videos on my channel going through a tunnel called Coseley Tunnel dark Canal history and Netherton tunnel into darkness out of light hope this helps thank you for watching 👍
There's also a video on the channel called Dudley canal tunnel - taking a boat trip through the dark and spectacular underground caverns hope this also helps 👍
It does seem to be a bit of a mystery why there as big as they are some of the others are a bit smaller but I believe this one is the biggest maybe it's because it's on a hill and it had to be this big because of drainage it's a little strange maybe they wouldn't build them like this today thanks for watching 👍

I will be getting to all of the vents at some point in the near future I didn't know that about why they are so big thanks for all the info 👍

It does seem to have always been a bit dodgy I imagine at four in the morning it would be a bit dangerous 👍

My daughter use to live near the canal and I use to take our dog walk along the canal but the question I have is why are the air vents so big?
