  • This fall, Emmy-winning screenwriter Cord Jefferson (Watchmen, Succession, The Good Place, Master of None) has become a major Oscar contender for his directorial debut movie, the forthcoming (and deeply funny) American Fiction. So we wanted to ask Cord the truth about awards, competitiveness, race, external validation, and happiness. Also, the Men In Black soundtrack.

As one of a few black males in a huge, mostly white organization I identify with this so much.

Me too man, me too. It's absurd on a level that is hard to convey.

As an actor it offends me to this day that Geoffrey Wright didn't win best actor for "Basquiat". It's absolutely one of the finest displays of acting I've ever seen.

My favorite thing about Pablo is that he is so good at helping the interviewee at explaining what they are trying to explain to us with metaphors/analogies. Always brings topics full circle as well. Bravo PTFO!
Also anyone know if this show is going to have like Seasons? or is it going to to go non-stop until Pablo finds out the meaning to life?

Loved this movie so much. Cheers to all involved! I haven’t read the book but it’s interesting how Monk is named after two artists and the story invokes a Ralph Ellison "The Invisible Man" crossover with Langston Hughes "Simple" novels.

Im sorry but this film is a strawman of Ghettoism to deflect from critiquing the black proffesional class, which is actually*, what the industry is behind.
The hood film is not what's being pushed for a decade now. Every film referenced in AF are over at minimum over decade old. Today it's the black bourgeoisie that Hollywood wants. THATS what should've been critiqued. But that would compromise Cords tribe.
Casting Issa Rae is a tell because she's a prime example of this age of black art the industry pushes. That scene at the end was a deflection to pretend the hood story is whatwhite people wanna hear from black artists today*. The biggest rappers aren't gangster rappers. It's a scapegoating of lower class black folks.
The Erasure was a response to Push , which was in a different time. There are no Boyz N The Hood as it was in that context. It's films like Dear White People, or American Fiction itself that are pushed
