To all those people in here saying "they can go home now." My neighbours are Syrian and they fled the fighting in 2011, 13 years ago. The wife works at a PT for our local gym and the husband in IT, firm jobs their kid was born here and goes to school in the UK and made a bunch of friends in our neightbourhood. the family is an active part of our community inviting people round for beers (yes, they drink) and BBQs, all the time. They are nicest people and a value to our community.

I think the thing that made me optimistic was how the HTS had dedicated civilian outreach corps in Aleppo that worked to restore infrastructure / services. Unlike the dumb comments on here who just doubt without saying why they’re doubting, I have faith in the ability for people who were previously hardline insurgents to realize how wrong they were and improve towards more moderate policy stances. Edit: also should add that unlike the Taliban (who many people are using as a benchmark for HTS), these guys have openly invited NGO’s and have a division responsible for interfacing with aid providers. Whereas the Taliban made the same promises that the HTS did (no sectarian violence, maintaining women’s rights) but didn’t let NGO’s freely operate which meant that oversight could not be established for them. For Syria it’s a bit different.

I think the thing that made me optimistic was how the HTS had dedicated civilian outreach corps in Aleppo that worked to restore infrastructure / services. Unlike the dumb comments on here who just doubt without saying why they’re doubting, I have faith in the ability for people who were previously hardline insurgents to realize how wrong they were and improve towards more moderate policy stances.
Edit: also should add that unlike the Taliban (who many people are using as a benchmark for HTS), these guys have openly invited NGO’s and have a division responsible for interfacing with aid providers. Whereas the Taliban made the same promises that the HTS did (no sectarian violence, maintaining women’s rights) but didn’t let NGO’s freely operate which meant that oversight could not be established for them. For Syria it’s a bit different.

@@akmyths2391 I agree & know they exist, but it’s just that if the HTS has taken steps to become the public face of Syrian opposition forces + are already working with parliamentarians, then there’s reason to believe that non-insurgent civilians living in Syria will likely align to them instead of any separatist groups. From the prior interview that the HTS guy (Al-Joulani) had with BBC, it also appears that they considered it a type of “task force” that was always going to be disbanded or subsumed into the existing Syrian government apparatus.
