I played them all except for the PC Engine one. I absolutely love the series, and I think the series really hasn't had enough entries. Also, great review!
MichaelBtheGameGenie Right?! The jumping and general glitchiness aside, I think its really good. I think its really interesting that the recent reboot seems to take a lot of inspiration from it despite most not really liking this version.
Never even knew a different Strider existed for the NES. Once again as a kid I had to endure a sub-par C64 version. Not as bad a conversion as some but still not great.
I'll agree, I was a big fan of the game on the NES.... It was in the day where I would only get a game every once and a while (budget) so most games I played it a lot love or hating them. Over all, I enjoyed it and thought it was fun BUT, I never saw the Arcade game till AFTER I had the NES cart, and I think that makes a big difference here.
Thanks! IMO the MegaDrive/Genesis version is probably the best version - while revisiting it for this video, I kinda realized its even better than the arcade original. The NES one is definitely worth playing though, if only because its so different than the arcade.
Nice showcase. I myself played the NES Strider coincidentally at the time Strider 2 was announced. I hadn't even known about the arcade version and thought Strider 2 was a sequel to the NES version. After I eventually played the Genesis port, I was disappointed in its simpler storyline.
I'm biased because this was the only Strider game I played as a kid before being exposed to the others many years later, but it's still by far my favorite in the series. I really hope it makes it to the Nintendo Switch Online service soon
i had the nes version growing up and had no idea that the arcade version even existed. I was really bummed that the arcade was so different when i finally got a chance to check it out later in the 90's.
Yeah, Strider's kind of a black sheep on the NES, but it's definitely my favorite version (yeah, even over the arcade, sorry guys), and has the closest ties with the Manga (i.e. Matic, Cain, Sheena, Fasceas Clay, etc.). Of course, it wasn't the first one I played - that honor did go to the arcade. But the NES version stuck with me the most.
Good review, and the first time I played the NES version was on the on the GBA Capcom Classic Mini Mix as I grew up with the awesome Genesis version, and personally don't think the NES version is a terrible game, but it's not a good game either.
Commodorefan64 The Genesis port was the first time I'd played the arcade version too - and I think its actually better than the arcade original. I didn't realize it til spending a bit of time with them back to back.
@ben owenI'm not saying that he's crazy, I'm saying that it's crazy talk to say that the Genesis version is better than the arcade original after spending a bit of time with them back to back. Whatever he's basing that claim on isn't based on any objective reality, just his own subjective opinion - which can be crazy. Like the subjective opinion that the earth is flat can be crazy.
What do you guys thibk of the psx version? I think im going to play through it this weekend. I chose it because it looked more like the arcade version than other ports
just played through the game. Beautiful game. especially for it's time. loved it. thanks for the advice. Want to try and play through on hardest mode with no continues now.
never got around to it. Sometimes after I beat a game (even if its on easy mode like this one) its hard for me to pick it up again. That's what happend with this one...I just beat ghouls and ghosts on the psx two days ago. That was really fun. love that series.
Ah man, I was hoping you'd cover Strider 2 in-depth! That was actually my first Strider game. Ever since then I've considered the original arcade/Genesis game to be really cheesy and slow, but I'm sure it was fantastic for its' time. As for the NES Strider, that was a good laugh. :) I'm planning on doing a review of how Strider went from PS1 arcade style to PS4/XB1 Metroidvania at some point. It seems like such an odd design choice. Great video as always, Coury. And fantastic editing as always. I was blown away when you got the skewed scroll shot of the magic menu. Are you self-taught in AfterEffects, or did you get extra help?
***** Man, I went back and forth between covering the whole series and not. I had a complete play through of Strider 2 with Hiryu and Hien that I ended up not using at all for this. I eventually decided, with time constraint to just keep my focus on the Arcade vs. Console aspect. (we generally release an episode every 2 weeks, unless something comes up). After Effects, I'm pretty new at. I've pretty much self taught all the basics but still have an absolute ton to learn - its a very intimidating program, but I'm getting better. Generally I find its amazing what you can do with just a 2D image, a 3D camera and some depth of field - the overworld maps the Phantasy Star video area good example of this.

Great review...I have sadly only played the NES version but I kinda really like it

Try the Genesis version. Just practice a little with it.

Question: Who doesn't love a good Ninja game?
Answer: Germany.

I had the exact same experience
Great video ! Need to try the nes versions as I had a megadrive and mastersystem

I really love some of the music from the NES version, like the music from the Egyptian level.

+Daniel Tittyfish I like ur name, Mr. Tittyfish :D LoL
One of my favorite games growing up.

I’ll have to give the originals a try - I’d always look past it at the video rental stores. Just picked up the reboot for $2 during the steam sale.
What! No mentioning of Hagane for the SNES or the SNES Strider-clone Run Saber?! Those games were f'n awesome!
W-what? Did you read the title?
Hey Coury what did you think of the genesis port?
He likes it more than the arcade version.
I never knew an NES version existed.. I always thought that the oldest port was the Genesis version.
Good review :)
Daniel San GMR Thank you!
Solid review dude

[Coury] its great! I actually used the PSX version of 1 for the arcade version in this video.
+My Life in Gaming haha. I was wondering how you screen captured an arcade game.
just played through the game. Beautiful game. especially for it's time. loved it. thanks for the advice. Want to try and play through on hardest mode with no continues now.
How did you go with that?

YTGCnow brought me here.
Mega Drive version is obviously going to be the best. While the sequel by Tiertex is disappointing I don't think it's THAT bad.
