    The tortoise tries to run but the lions are too fast for it. Lucky for the tortoise, it has a second defense. The tortoise shell is made up of upper and lower bony structures called the carapace and plastron. The carapace and plastron meet at the side of the body, giving the tortoise a fully protected skeletal box. The lion wasn’t able to solve the mystery of the tortoise shell this time. After the lions wandered off, the tortoise was able to continue on its way.

    Lions usually eat antelopes or wildebeests, however that doesn't mean tortoises are off the menu. Do you think preying on these reptiles is worth a lion's trouble?

      Mohamed Farouk plot twists, as soon as the tortoise thinks he's safe and comes back out, the lion bounds from one of those bushes and is like " I GOTCHA NOW! Mwahahahahaha!"

    I wonder if lions ever managed to actually crack one open. That would be one shell of a feast. Thanks National Geographic for sharing.

      @@lightplan They do, crocodiles can crack a tortoise's shell open. I remember seeing this video of a gator or croc where one put the entire shell in it's mouth and bit it. The shell succumbed to the pressure and the water in proximity got all bloody after that.

    • @billr5842
      @billr5842 Рік тому

      @@lightplan that's nature! An unsuspecting animal like a turtle has evolved to be quite successful despite being so slow. They have carved out their own little niche. Every animal still alive has evolved to be fairly successful.

    • @Frosty_V0
      @Frosty_V0 Рік тому

      @@UnitedKingdom100 Yeah, but there are also instances of a gator failing to crush a large turtle, so you can imagine that the giant tortoises are truly invulnerable to predators. The only thing that might be able to break them is an elephant stomping on them.
