  • Tuba City, Ariz. The 9th week of the CONVOY summer training program saw an enthusiastic gathering of participants from Tuba City High School, Greyhills High School Academy, Tuba City Junior High School, and Dine College Mentor Avatars. Initially planned to begin early in the morning at Dine College Tuba City campus, the event faced a potential setback with the arrival of rain. However, the determined spirit of the participants prevailed, and by 9 AM, the sun shined brightly.
Tuba City Rodeo Grounds was launching site for the "Solar Balloon Launch" experiment. The collaborating team from Sandia National Laboratories had completed all necessary paperwork with the Federal Aviation Authority and cleared for lift-off. Representatives from the Tuba City Chapter House and community members were present to witness the event.
Under the expert guidance of Mr. Daniel (Dan) Small, Dr. Shazia Hakim, Dr. Ojo, and Ms. Phyllis Begay, the students filled a balloon with helium gas and carbon particles. They attached a load carrying a GPS sensor/tracker, a camera, some seeds, and strawberries. The balloon was launched into the air, marking a memorable moment for everyone involved.
The balloon's real-time tracking showed its path towards Flagstaff from the Dine College Tuba City campus. The primary goal of the experiment was to provide CONVOY participants with insights into atmospheric science and the effects of radiation on DNA. Upon its return, the balloon's payload, including seeds and strawberries, will be analyzed to study any mutations caused by radiation exposure at high altitudes.
A number of community members from Tuba City witnessed this significant event, showcasing the incredible achievements of the CONVOY participants.
