  • Do you like scrappy quilts? Quilts with feedsack? Quilts used to express political messages, activist impulses, or group allegiance? How about Sears Century of Progress contest quilts or Kansas City Star pattern quilts? Maybe you love looking at historical photos that show quilts and textiles being made or used. Join historian Janneken Smucker and collector/author Roderick Kiracofe for A New Deal for Quilts. They will discuss the many cultural, social, political, and economic influences that shaped quilts and quiltmaking during the Great Depression.
Hosted by International Quilt Museum curator Marin Hanson, this Textile Talk will draw on the IQM exhibit and new book, "A New Deal for Quilts," to explore quilts of the New Deal era in a new light. It will reflect on parallels between the upheavals of the 1930s with those we recently experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
