  • This video documents the process I used to replace the main RA gear and worm on my CEM60. Having never done this before I would not consider this to be a "how to" video as it is more of a "how I did it" video.

    Hey Tom. Awesome video. I’m the proud owner of a recently acquired preowned CEM60. Now doubt overhauling it is in my future one day. It’ll be that much easier with your video. Cheers!

    After replaced a new RA worm gear, I did not fix my CEM60 with large RA peak. However, I found the time: 18:49 in you video, a white plastic washer is in inside the clutch locker, but after replaced a new worm gear, the white washer became outside 38:47. Mine is the same, white washer is outside. I am correcting this mistake. I will try tonight to see if this work. Thanks for your video!

      After I changed washer from outside to inside, the RA peak to peak value from 12" to 8". Unfortunately, it still did not fix CEM60 problem.

      Wow - good catch! As you mentioned this may not be a substantive part of the issue, but next time I have it off the pier I will correct it! Thanks

      @@IamTomzo By the way, the position sensor board of RA gear seems be moved after you changed the worm gear. Please make sure the optical disk won't touch sensor, both in disengaged and engage position. at 38:28

      @@reedlu1975 Another good catch! I think I may be able to take care of these without taking it off the pier. Thanks!

    Where did you order the worm and gear ? Can not seem to find it anywhere . Will do a similar replacement. Thx

      I got it directly from Ioptron - I contacted their support techs and they gave me the info on how to order. I got them a while back as the CEM60 was discontinued when the CEM70 came out as I was worried about how much stock they carried. I would think they still have some but you would need to contact them directly.

      @@IamTomzo Thanks for the quick feedback.Already got info from Ioptron that they are out of stock.I also have the CEM70 now, but I still want to get the CEM60 back in shape.

      i got a quote recently. Not from my vendor (who should have replacement parts available by law) - US$ 240 per worm, plus shipping. In my opinion, this price is cocky.

    at minute 31:31, I see that you have a 3D printed knob from the altitude knob, can you share the STL file or from where did you buy it please?

    Well, unfortunately this replacement of the worm and gear did not eliminate my 300 second irregularity in RA - dang! I had expected to find more visible damage to the worm and gear but as I point out in the video there was nothing really there. Something else is going on and I am thinking it is a gear meshing issue.

      Hi Tom, Thanks a million for making this video. I have some issues with periodic errors on my CEM60. I will contact iOptron to check on the parts availability. I may try the repair myself or ask iOptron for a quote to do the rebuild.

      @@ericgrossman7248 At least someone found it useful! It is not a really difficult job - I think that interpreting the instructions and then getting the main RA gear off and on were the biggest challenges. Good luck!

      @@IamTomzo So how did you eventually solve your periodic error problem?

    • @IamTomzo
      @IamTomzo  2 роки тому

      @@ericgrossman7248 I got it down by about half by increasing the gear mesh. I had been following the "standard advice" of turning the know until it stops and then backing off 1/8th turn, but I found that by not backing off the performance improved. I have a buddy who uses a CEM60 and is kind of a wizard with PHD2 settings so he is going to come over soon and help me dial it in more. My goal is to hot 0.6" on a consistent basis. My last test was at just under 0.8".

      @@IamTomzo hi tom, thanks for your video. I saw a Russian video (had to run a separate translator during play). In that video, he identified one bad bearing on the worm gear, which I couldn't see how he knew because they looked good on inspection, but he replaced them both. Just saying because you didn't find an obvious cause for your RA spike. I also have the same issue, and on inspection I didn't see anything on my gear as well.
