      yes you do learn, like he said no fixed prices,if you're a local and you know what's up you'll get that rug for 30 dollars, but a tourist you'l get got for 200, lesson here is always divide what you'll pay by 10 and pay them the 10%

    Nothing unique here. The same fkn thing happens for every bit of merchandise in every developing country. Even if you do bargain down, your eventual price will still be waaaaaaaaaay more than what a local would pay.

  • @karaloca

    I found the tannery to be the hardest to escape. You go in because they invite you to, no mention of money. Then the guys that take you there want paying, as does the man who runs the tannery. Finally they want to take you to a shop that sells carpets. The prices are crazy and they started on £800, I told him for that price the thing better bloody fly. One thing to note, the tanneries are further out on the edge of the Medina, not near the main squares full of tourists. A few wrong turns which is easy to do can lead you into some pretty quiet and quite frankly scary streets. Parts of which look like some war torn city in the Middle East. Try not to look lost as the moment you do, people will prey on you and offer directions. Now are they going to direct you back on track or somewhere even quieter where they feel safer to do with you as they please? I even noticed groups of people working together to send me in a particular direction. They were originally walking behind me then would over take and wait ahead of me. I didn’t like this one bit and sensed I was being goaded. I decided to ask another person to see if additional directions would match the first set. I deliberately chose a father with his young daughter which way it was to get back on track and he gave completely different directions, he was walking my way so I walked with him, I noticed when there was enough distance between me and the others who were giving me directions, he told me not to go with them. My senses were really tingling by now and not too long later I had never felt so relieved to hear loud booming Northern English accents, five chunky blokes who looked ex-forces on a lads holiday, I did my best to make conversation and walked with them until I felt completely safe again and wished them well on their trip. I never ventured into that part of the city again as it felt different, too quiet and very easy to get lost in.

    Is a good videoclip. Our hotel in Tunisia organsjed a free shuttle into town. We were the only English family on the bus. We were given special treatment until eventually being spilt from the group and taken to a carpet shop where we were sat down and given tea. They then proceeded to unroll at least 50 carpets to which we said no each time. They cannot make you buy their rubbish ! If conned into being taken to a shop like this just stay firm !

Then we're guided to a place where they actually work with leather outside. After they showed us a little shop next to that place. When we come out, three of them eere asking for money... "No guide! No guide! I'm a guardian" That was they're excuse...

    Most rugs are bought by locals, the tourists are just the 'icing on the cake'. A typical local earns 100 dh/day, less for women. How could they afford to pay 20 days salary for a rug? Turn the equation on its head... how many days did it take the weavers to produce the rug? I've watched weaving on an old loom, and for that size I would say two days.

    • @nicoladevilli173
      @nicoladevilli173 2 роки тому

      Two days?
      In two days u could barely finish a very small size monochrome kilim if someone did all the warping, heddles ecc. before.
      For that rug I would say at least 2 or 3 weeks, considering the technique and size.
