  • In this video I will show how to make a wooden ring out of shavings and CA glue. In this case I will use European oak, which by their grain size makes their shavings a little hard to work with due to their fragility. I hope you enjoy it.

    En aquest video us ensenyo com realitzar un anell a partir d'encenalls de fusta i cola de cianocrilat. Aquesta vegada utilitzaré roure europeu, que per les característiques del gra fa que els seus encenalls siguin més difícils de treballar doncs resulten bastant fràgils. Espero que us agradi.

    En este video os voy a ensenyar como hacer un anillo a partir de virutas de madera y pegamento de cianocrilato. Esta vez voy a utilizar madera de roble europeo, que por las características de su grano resulta más difícil de trabajar con sus virutas pues son bastante quebradizas. Espero que os guste.

    What is the nature of the wood so that the shavings do not break during processing?
    It's a great idea and I'd like to make a ring on my own for my girlfriends anniversary.

      +Lennard Ponzlet You'll have more chance to accomplish that I'd you choose a easy to bend wood like oak.

    Interesting process. I would imagine that this makes a more durable ring than a turned one as the grain is continuous along the circumference and over lapping.

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  10 років тому +5

      You are right Chris. With this technique you get more flexible rings, therefore more resistant. Furthermore, the thickness of the ring can be much lower, which is an advantage if your goal is to make fine jewelry.

    Si usted usa una piedra de alto brillo, utilizada por técnicos dentales para pulir las prótesis, le dará el doble de brillo y mucho mas rápido. Es super económica y dura mucho tiempo. Se pule con disco de fieltro.

      Woodworking Barcelona Busque algún sitio donde vendan artículos para laboratorios dentales. Es una piedra blanca, parecida a una tiza, viene generalmente en forma de cilindro. Cuesta céntimos. Un saludo cordial.

    Hallo, love the video's you've got up. I am going to invest in my own drill and wondered if you could recommend one. I've just left uni so no longer have access to a workshop so suddenly needing to have all my own tools. Going to get myself a good vice too, but I'm mainly wondering about the drill... no idea what to get. Would be for making jewellery but also odd DIY shelf making jobs.

    • @hannahp2240
      @hannahp2240 9 років тому

      Hannah Pedersen Pretty gutted I can't use the lathe, pillar drill or belt sander.... or even the bansaw D: ... so a drill that can become all these things would be prime...

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  9 років тому

      Hannah Pedersen Hi Hannah! About drills, I would recommend you a cordless one with at least 14.4V and 1.5Amp. I own this one: www.amazon.com/Hitachi-DS14DSFL-14-4-Volts-Lithium-Ion-Cordless/dp/B004D29IA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427436585&sr=8-1&keywords=cordless+drill+14.4 and I'm pretty pleased with it. Corded drills are cheaper and more powerful but they have a big weakness (bulky, heavy, noiser and your only can use it if you are near to a power point). In the other hand, if you cannot afford a lathe I believe a dremel tool it's the perfect rotatory tool to allow you jewelry making.

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  9 років тому

      Hannah Pedersen I'm agree it's a good start point. Good luck! Regards from Barcelona.

    I had trouble getting any shavings that would stay together. They would just crack and crumble

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  6 років тому

      +Dennis Adams Hi Dennis. You need to adjust your handplane to achieve thinner shavings. If you still have cracking you'll need to add a previous step by soaking your wood shavings on warm water for a while and let them dry rolled up. Good luck!

    Ya he roto algunos intentando hacerlos de una pieza de ébano (alguno me ha quedado genial, pero no tengo ni torno ni nada que se le parezca) De lo que no me veo capaz es de sacar viruta de ébano... es muy quebradizo... intentaré con alguna otra a ver si soy capaz. Gracias por los vídeos, son fantásticos.

      @WoodworkingBarcelona  7 років тому +1

      Cierto Andoni, el Ébano es la mar de duro y se necesita ser atacado con una cuchilla con poca inclinación y muy afilada. Una opción es mojarlo previamente para ablandarlo y volver las fibras algo menos quebradizas. Un saludo y gracias por tu apoyo!

    Great Video! I am in the process of making my own wedding band, do you think this method is suitable for a ring that would last many ears? How strong do you think the ring is? love your videos, keep up the great work

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  8 років тому +1

      About the finish, it will last as much as you take care of it. Even with a CA finish I recommend to avoid water, soap, ... About its resistance I have to admit that's enough for a normal use. As other material jewelry (silver, gold, etc), it will break if you really abuse it. I hope it helps. Regards from Barcelona.

    THis method is simply amazing!! The scraps way is super great, it makes the ring way more durable because it's composite and all the wood grains are circular. you can even mix in various types of wood. Thanks a lot! i'll have to try this out!

    • @WoodworkingBarcelona
      @WoodworkingBarcelona  7 років тому

      +Danielsteak you can make this ring (bent lamination) or a solid one just by hand tools. About the sanding question, you can dive this with patience using rasos, files and regular sandpaper and some elbow grease. Regards!
