  • First flight in the Seminole! Nothing intense, just the basic familiarization maneuvers (steep turns, stalls, slow-flight, pattern work, etc.) It was an awesome flight, and more is to come, including MULTIPLE CAMERA ANGLES!

    Slooow down on your radio calls! Just because you're confident doesn't mean the other pilots understand what you're saying.

      Agreed. Makes it easier for other aircraft to fully understand what you said. I'm at Rucker and I always tell my students to slow down on their calls. Most important point being, their fellow student pilots might become even more confused.

      @@tyler.donati Would have to disagree with you - I needed to go back five seconds on numerous occasions to figure out what had been said. Great video (I'll begin training on a Seminole next month), but slower calls would be helpful, imo.

      I found his instructor a little annoying and impatient. Obviously this student is crushing it for a first flight, but his instructor is getting on to him for petty things and not giving him credit where it's due. My opinion.

    Great video! How were you able to secure the camera to the ceiling? I'm currently completing similar training at Liberty University's flight program, and was curious as to how you're able to get it to stick. Thanks, and happy flying!

      Awesome! It's just a regular adhesive mount. It needs to be applied in relatively warm temperatures with decent humidity, but if it's put on correctly it will stick. The flying team is putting them in all the airplanes for use. That way we can just clip in when we need to, whether we just want to film training or do shots at practice.

    It’s Flap - Flap - Gear (after positive rate of climb )- flap ( accelerating 88knots ) , for slow flight , instead of flap gear flap flap. But good video 👍🏾

    is it the Turbo Seminole? goin full throttle in our PA44-180T will result in overboost. makes those stall recovery power settings a bit tricky.

      No, we fly the naturally aspirated model.

      They only ever made about 100 44Ts. I believe like the later Senecas and Turbo Arrow IVs you can get Merlin wastegates for them so they don't overboost.

    I just have to ask...Why do you set 25/25 or 25 squared? What was the MEI's explanation for this?

      25 squared is climb power for the PA44-180

      Actually, the POH says the engines are good for full power without limitations. 25squared is an OWT practice taught by CFIs. Its supposed to "be easy on the engines", but it isn't. It prolongs time spent at high engine stress regimes, results in higher Internal Cylinder pressure & temperatures, (easy to see on an Engine monitor and is overall not good practice. Ask your MEI for hard facts about benefits of 25 squared.

      I already have my Commercial Multi at this point, but page 4-33 of the POH says engine power should be reduced to approximately 75% power. Referring to the power setting table, 25/25 is approximately 75% power.
      Page 4-33 also explicitly states, "Consistent operational use of cruise climb power settings is strongly recommended since this practice will make a substantial contribution to fuel economy and increased engine life, and will reduce the incidence of premature engine overhauls."

      Also, I have more time in the glass cockpit Seminole, and the engine monitoring clearly demonstrates the benefits of using an appropriate cruise climb power setting.

    Very poor radio calls from the student, needs to slow down. Very unprofessional indeed. (Yours truly, Senior Captain, 32,000 hours and type rating on every Boeing in production from 1979 till present, tutored thousands and thousands of young pilots.) Slow down!

    Folks, you don't want to be too hamfisted in a light under-powered twin. But then that's why they make good trainers. Just as 152/172's are less stable than PA-28's. And yes, do make sure you can be heard and understood making your radio calls

    I would never buy a Beech Bonanza, I would buy a PA-44 WAY before the single engine Beech. You get near the same performance with greater fuel consumption, but lose an engine in the Beech and you are gliding, not so with Florida's famous Indian!
    -Did you know that when Piper moved to Vero Beach, they started naming their products after Indian tribes? It was appropriate, since Vero Beach is in Indian River county, Florida...

    Great video! I'm curious how you mounted your camera for this clip? I currently have a GoPro with a suction cup mount and I've had a tough time finding a good angle for it in the Seminole. This looks awesome though !

      Thanks! We got approval from the Chief to put 3M adhesive mounts in the planes for this shot angle, so that's how I got it. Just clipped in with a J-hook buckle

      Jam-packed busy. I've been a CFI/CFII since August and a full-time student. Flying 50-60 hours a month and trying to manage a 4.0 as full-time college student don't leave much time for anything. I've got a TON of footage sitting around; it's just been taking me a while to get around to editing it. I really regret not posting often/as much as I have in the past...But yes: More videos are coming!!

Multi picked up quickly, then NIFA SAFECON, then CFI training and II and now school is back and I have flight students.... Really trying to find time.     Interesting, I fly at the University of North Dakota and we retract flaps completely on power off stall then gears. Instead of the flap gear flap flap thing you guys do.

      Yeah that is interesting. We do it that way simply because the gear are a bigger drag penalty than the last 25 degrees of flaps

      In the Seminole, we roll in at 88 KIAS, and begin the pull at 20 kts above Vs (77 KIAS)

      +GeneralAviationGuru We trim to 68kias and dip to 45° and pull to a buffet. Reason we do 68 is because it's 1.2 x Vso. We used to 88kias but someone randomly did the math recently and realized 88 kts was 26kts above Vso haha.

      +sweetcheels We only put the gear down for accelerated stalls, so that's why our speed is in reference to Vs and not Vso

      Long story, but I decided I wanted to be a pilot when I was eight years old. Through various summer camps and aviation programs, I gained invaluable experience and started flight lessons when I was 13. Lots of work to get to where I am now, and much work to go!

    A Seminole was on an instruction flight on Tuesday October 2, 2023 Newberg, Oregon. It spiraled, to the ground. 2 died 1 survivor.
