      Very true, yet can you see how when you start to get momentum that it's easy to end up making these mistakes? Also, what have you been doing to help market yourself and attract new clients better?

    i really agree with your point about finishing faster then estimated dates. i always give clients a longer time then it really takes. then they get all excited to see how quickly i finish their models. last time i did a "2 week" project in 2 days cause i happend to be extra motivated. dude was over the moon about it. now i am not actually lying about the time here , it can take longer then my estimations sometimes too. but trying to hit that mark earlier is a great challenge.

    What is an acceptable amount of time to wait for a client to pay an invoice regarding already created character designs (not commissions)? I am thinking 3-7 days depending on the price. For anything $100+ I am considering being flexible with monthly payments but not sure if it's worth the extra bookkeeping.

      That's an interesting question. Had they paid you before beginning the work in this scenario as well?

      So you know what’s interesting about that? Companies already integrate these types of structures. Have you noticed that?

      @@TheArtMentorTrue enough. But at least I don't have to juggle 3 different assignments with 3 different clients at the same time, nor do I have to talk to clients directly. Which allows me to have pure focus on the one assignment at hand.

      Unfortunately true, but can you also see how pricing yourself too cheap and accumulating too many low-value clients can be something that artists all too easily create for themselves? I unfortunately see this all the time

    • @kaisercrimson_1
      @kaisercrimson_1 6 місяців тому

      @@TheArtMentor Definitely! I went through something like that back when I first started out. It took a long time to really break myself out of it and price myself correctly, but by then I'd already burned out because I felt like I was doing way too much for so little...
      Now I'm definitely taking things more seriously, but it's hard to actually get clients who want to pay for my work these days.

    Since I found your channel I have seen most of your recent videos about commissions.
    From getting rid of art pricimg sheets and avoiding sites like fiverr to searching hiring post through reddit and letting potential clients decide if they like my art first before talking about pricing.
    I am really gratefull cause I got 4 commisions by hearing your advice ✨❤️
    The only "bad thing" about looking "hiring artist post" is I still can't figure out how to handle the time I should invest in it since there are post everyday at every hour.
    Sometimes I spend the whole day just searching hiring's post and I don't progress on projects which I guess is not the best strategy

    • @TheArtMentor
      @TheArtMentor  6 місяців тому

      wow that's amazing!! I'm so proud of your success!!
      For the looking for hire posts, can I just add the caveat that this depends on the platform? For example, DA does that well, but not so well on Reddit. Is that helpful to know?

      @@TheArtMentor you may need to be more specific, Like is it what do i tell clients? what is the fallout? How did i get myself into this hole deal in the first place?

    • @TheArtMentor
      @TheArtMentor  6 місяців тому +1

      How about all of those? What do you pinpoint is the crux of your issue with underestimating? Is it that you underbid yourself, that you take way too much time ahead of what you actually take, or something else?

    • @twitchew
      @twitchew 6 місяців тому

      @@TheArtMentor I think that the biggest issue I have is that I am a hobbyist, which is probably the root of many of my issues. I have limited time and am self taught, so i am in many ways learning as I go. I have slow delivery times (I can only work 1-2 days a week on projects) so I very much underbid because I think that this "makes up" for the delivery times.
      I do a few revisions for the client and send rough drafts of the work to make sure that they are getting what the expect. I have a bad habit of trying to go out and get commissions from people that have liked and commented on my work. but I probably have engaged a few too many.
      I also tend to try something new or interesting with each project, so I do learn more, but that eats into the time i have for doing a project, so that is an issue. I mean it looks great and the client is happy and i can post it to my portfolio. but it is still taking time.
      I have a contract that I supply the clients with that explains how 3D art works and tries to set exceptions about what is an is not easy to do, as well as delivery timelines being in weeks. I also include ways that the client can help me get them the art they have in mind and will be happy with . (descriptions, photos, collages, stick figure drawings, etc. )
      So far I have set up a sheet to keep contacts and check in with the clients letting them know where i am at with their project - even if it is "this is still on my list, i have some other clients ahead of you) , and they all seem ok, but I feel like i am letting them down. I also have a separate google doc for each client that they have access to where i record the decisions and correspondence so they can see what I am using to make their art.
