What a great, simple explanation of how to set these reels up. I especially like the demo at the start of how not to do it, and more importantly why not. I was recently taught this method on a TDI Trimix course, but found this a very helpful reference to come back to.
I'm a beginner (14 dives, not counting the pool). It's great to see tips like this. Thank you.
Now I know why I lost my brand new spool on my first dive in the Maldives this year, and no spare, and none on sale on the Island, just their huge free issue spool with 7m of line. Luckily a friendly dive guide lent me his for the duration.
Very good vid.
Finally found a video to understand to how to setup my spool ! Thanks sir ! From France ! :)
Hey Andy, off in Indonesia diving and saw your video. Great work, very helpful since I've just started to use an SMB. Appreciate your taking the time to share. Used it diving in Sulawesi for the first time. Worked like a champ.
Excellent set up, thanks so much. Simple, easy, works like a charm.
Very good video! Excellent idea for a setup with easy to follow instructions. I just prepared my gear accordingly for my next diving trip.
This is great! I've been experimenting for the most secure and snag hazard free way to rig up my spool and this is what I was hoping for. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Just set up my spool like this after watching your video and looking forward to giving it a go tomorrow.
New diver here, just getting my kit set up. This was really helpful.
Thanks Andrew, me and my missing reel thank you! Should've watched this before!
Been using this set up for 6 months. Works great!
Bonjour Andrew !
Nice video to show us how it's done. I have just bookmarked the link to your video so that my son and I can get our stuff ready for those cold swiss lakes.
Thank you !
Nicely done! This is very similar to how the PADI platinum course director suggested we setup our SMBs
Really nice and clear instructions, love the tip for the first little loop to help pull the line out.
Very useful video with clarifications and perfect set up, thanks !
Good demo. The wee loop on the side was new for me. I like it. Many thanks
thank you very much, it was a mess in my mind before I found your video!
Best one I have seen so far. I shared it on Scuba Board. I hope you don't mind.
Very Interesting video. I may try this with another one of my SMB's that's not my primary, I always leave a spool connected to my SMB that I carry now. Of course I either wear tech shorts or dive one of my suits with Cargo Leg pockets and the SMB attached to the D- Ring in my pocket. Normal stuff in my right pocket and Emergency in my left. I highly recommend suits with pockets or tech shorts, but that is my own preference. Once you have pockets you will never want to go back to a slick suit.
Hi Andy. Even if this comment is quite old, I still want to add:
Even if someone want's his spool to be permanently attached to his smb, he can use your shown method.
You just need to loosen the loop of your line from the D-ring a little bit, so you can put this part of the line through the hole of the finger spool. Then you can attach the boltsnap to the loop on the other side of the spool and the smb is still attached to the line too.
If you want to deploy the smb you just need to remove the boltsnap from the line and then you can pull at your smb so the line will be drawn back and tightened at your D-ring again.
Thank you so much for the tips!!! Greetings from Cozumel
Very well explained... Personally, for recreational diving I recommend to keep SMB and reel always together and I clip both of them to one of the reel's holes in order to have a double and thus more secure connection.
Great advice also for divers from across the Channel ! Cheers from Normandy. ;)
Extremely helpful video. Thanks brother! Cheers...
Great setup for a finger spool. Simple and reliable. Thanks a lot!!!
Такой способ проверен, работает отлично, особенно в перчатках толще 5 мм. Great vid, thumb's up!
Perfect set up, thanks !! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Very helpful video. Thanks.
Excellent video ...... thank you for de-mystifying the old spool and smb trick!!!
Dive well and safe!!!

@Bruce Denver thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Bruce Denver it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
@Gary Axl You are welcome :D
Great idea. That would work well with or without gloves. Thank you.
Very useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your time :)
Thank you for the tip!! Greetings from Belgium. Dive safe.

Excellent.
very good. thanks.
Un grand merci !
Awesome video, very helpful. Thank you!
fantastic stuff i showed a guy how i do my reel he called me a nana ,i now have validation
Thanks, Andy very useful!!
@@UKDiver Hi Andy. I have a question as I'm an uw photographer too. Is there a way to tied everything together i.e double ender, spool and DSMB but not risking of losing your spool. Since I have no hand to operate. It's quite troublesome.
Btw, I dive in south sea asia in wetsuit. I dun have a pocket to hold the DSMB.
Really helpful thanks
Thank you for great video, it's really helpful!
how come none of all these allfired great dive instructurs could ever show me this? Thanks a lot for this great instruction!
thank you, I will..
That an overhand knot initially used to make your big loop, not a granny knot.
outstanding! thank you
Hi! Thanks so much for sharing this. This is the best and most secure way I've seen. I'd like to have my SMB permanently attached to the spool so I don't have to fiddle with attaching it under the water. Do you have a suggestion or a method that is also secure while keeping that in mind? Thanks!
What size spool do you start with before removing some line? how many meters or feet?
thank you
Do you know, I’ve never actually measured one! It’s not that important though, I’d never normally launch a DSMB with a finger spool from deeper than say 15m anyway in most instances as for me, they are only used when abroad or for my backup. Dove safe!
I tend to leave my dsmb attached to the spool permanently and I'm looking for a way to secure it a little better. I use your methods on my other spool though. Most of my diving is done in Scottish sea lochs from a rhib and I'm always using my dsmb.
Thanks, doing this right now!
Hi. Do not use helium i dive mixture, its come from uranium deposits. Thank you for your presentation.
Fantastic video, thanks so much! I've been using a reel to date but don't like the bulk and thought a spool would be better for travel and easier to stow in the water. Was a little unsure of how it worked but that's cleared it up completely. Great tip regarding the size. I was going to go for a 30m from Redhat as well but will now opt for the 50m.
Out of interest, what are they like to wind back up from depth?
Great video, kudos!
Thanks good advice set up
Nice! Anyone else thinks Andrew looks like Peter Griffin from Family Guy?
Good video. Thanks.
감사합니니다~
-South Korea-
Great video. Have you got a video of setting up a spool already attached to SMB all ready to go?
Andrew, Thank You :)
Thanks again Andrew, I will be collecting my New Spools tomorrow after work as they will be at the PO. First thing, is what You haver shown me, even though i Live in Australia since last nearly 8 years now, ( from Ireland ) I will still be doing what you have shown me, as my 2 OTTER Dry's both have the Dry Glove system PLUS it just makes sense to Me, Thanks Again, Safe Dives
Great video, so glad I found this before I started using the spool. What brand are you using and what length do you recommend for UK diving (am thinking 45m cut to 30m as you mentioned)
Kerato Conus I Purchased the New Dive Rite Spools, they are Stainless Steel and XL Spool is 53M and You don't have to cut off any, which is Great :) I got Both Orange and Yellow in High Viz, 1 For each DSMB
great! thx!
I bet you know a thing or two about holes.
Im sry i cannot hear anything you are saying. Volume is too low.
I am sorry, but it is very hard to hear you.
OMG, such a waste of time! It’s a gdamn reel and NOT a contact mine. Can’t stand rec divers and their bs.
