    I consider your 'what makes this song great?' series to be a win-win-win. The artists get their work talked about, you get your hits, and we get a fantastic resource for learning and the sheer entertainment of it. They're bordering on a public service. Removing their music from history is spot on. This situation really doesn't serve anyone.

      I've never understood the blocking for video's like Rick's. A thoughtful analysis like ALL of Rick's "What Makes This Song Great" videos, are HUGE promotions for the song and the band, and all their work. This is a free promotion for the band that will stimulate sales of the original artist's material, not cannibalize the revenue. To all the artist management and to those that own the intellectual property that artists have created, please think this through. As an aside, Led Zeppelin has been and continues to be my favorite band in my lifetime. We're still listening to their music 50+ years after it was released. We do this because it's great on its own right, but Rick keeps the music relevant to new generations of music lovers and musicians. Rick even says that his biggest demographic is 25-34 (Millennials, of which 2 of my music lover sons are). It's thanks to Rick's videos, and others like them, that people in this age range know who Led Zeppelin are, and that they have a chance to experience their music. Social media influencers are the modern marketers; it's how things get promoted. Embrace it, go buy Led Zeppelin music and all the other music that Rick analyzes and promotes, and keep rock and roll alive forever.

    LISTEN UP all OWNERS OF COPYRIGHTED MUSIC: Whenever mr. Beato does one of his "What makes this song great" and I happen to catch it on youtube, I head straight to spotify to play the song, and often does so several times - even though most frequently I already own a copy of the song, I tend to stream it. Not seldom I will share Beato's video with friends, and I will engage in conversations about this song. When Beato e.g did his video on Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne, I refuse to believe I was the only guy who filled my playlists with Steely Dan in the following days (if not weeks).
    There are numerous other examples, as Rick Beato points out in this video. The other day I watched a masterclass Max Martin gave in relations to receiving the International Polar Music Prize in Sweden. Mr. Martin was on stage, interviewed by some music industry guy doing a brief run-through of Martin's quite impressive hit-parade, playing snippets of his hits and discussing how they came to be. Martin shared anecdotes from the creative process behind the hits. The video, however, goes silent pretty much during every music excerpt - due to copyright issues. Here we have the composer and producer himself talking about his own music, but we are not allowed to hear it. It is utterly ridiculous.
    I just dont get how the industry can fail to understand the value of keeping music alive. "Fair use" is not a threat to the profits of neither artists, record labels nor copyright owners. The opposite is quite obviously true. In a fair world Beato, Neely and a bunch of others ought to be paid for their work by the same people who in stead block their videos.

    • @AFGSstudio
      @AFGSstudio 3 роки тому +3

      I think that's the point!
      That's the angle that's missing in this discussion:
      The owners of said music don't want to open pandoras box by having a reversal of revenue in paying people like Rick to educate the masses on published music. So the trend is to keep the money stream flowing in one direction. To allow Beato carte blanche on his videos would be an admission of weakness and would instantly be explioted and those so-called management companies would lose the little margin they are seeking to hold onto.
      Guys like Rick have not turned the tables on these management companies and demanded payment for services rendered. That's the scenario they are afraid of and they are hoping no group of educators or legal teams find a chunk in that thinly layered armour.

      Music industry executives seem to be singularly unimaginative and irresponsibly incompetent at advancing the pecuniary interests of their clients. That's been the case at least since the use of cassette tapes. We were warned, "Home taping" would destroy music! They similarly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the Napster days. More granularly, wherever it's possible for the industry to inflict an act of anti-advertisment on the public, they unhesitatingly choose to do so. Do they imagine the fewer people who see, hear or know about their wares, the better.? Seems an unusual strategy to make money!

    • @MrXyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
      @MrXyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 2 роки тому +3

      This sadly is not a new problem. I there 80's there was a "Home taping is killing music" campaign. It was totally warped thinking. Friends would record albums on cassette and make up mix tapes, and that was massively influential free advertising. I would then go out and buy the album that contained one song from the mix tape or another album from that band. And that was not just little old me, everyone was doing that in the 80's and something similar ever since.

    “Erasing themselves from history,” great line. And it’s true, at least to some degree. No, The Dead, AC/DC, Hendrix
    and the like will not be erased. But its so small minded and non-inclusive. Two terribly ironic things: 1) The Grateful
    Dead blocking anyone or anything is absurd. They openly encouraged concert taping and sharing tapes so their fans
    and PROSPECTIVE FANS (record and ticket buyers, of course) could spread and enjoy their “product,” i.e., music.
    And, 2) Jimi Hendrix wanted as many people as possible to hear his music. He was idealistic and wanted the whole
    world to share his peaceful and love filled message. Jimi would be appalled that his estate does not and will not allow
    people to listen to and view videos of him and his music. It’s opposite to what he wished for. Blocking Jimi Hendrix?
    He would’ve had none of that. UA-cam was the perfect medium for Jimi Hendrix’ music. He’d never let this happen.

      and the like will be. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, etc? Music and cultural history will celebrate them for decades, if not millennia, just
      as Beethoven, Brahms, and the Classical Masters are celebrated and studied to this day. And that’s not mentioning the thousands upon thousands
      of concert tickets and recordings still purchased every year. Oh yes, we’ll be long gone and debating this subject in our Heavenly rocking chairs before
      the great art, music and literature of my generation is relegated to the dust bin of history. Tom Waits? Love the guy, seen him a few times, but he’ll be

      Rudy Sal 14 it seems the comment I responded to has disappeared, so it’s easy to read my comment out of context.
      It also bothers me when young people are unaware of classic rock, but I get over it quickly because *it’s not their music*, the music of *now* is their music, and most people don’t care enough to bother digging into the past. If you’re 30 and got into classic rock in middle school, that would be early 2000’s. Classic rock was 20 years fresher than it is now, and many bands of the 60’s & 70’s we’re still active. You’re also probably an actual music fan, you likely collect the music you like and actively seek out new bands. Most people don’t do that.
      I was arguing against people my age who always say things like “damn kids today like shitty music”. That drives me insane, I’ve been hearing my peers say that since we were all in our early 20’s! My parents said that about my generation too, and their parents said it to them. That’s a sure sign that someone is over the hill before their time. At 30, you’re not young anymore, so don’t end up like the grumpy old people I’m talking about. I used to listen to rap when I was younger when Tupac and ice cube were big and enjoyed that but new so called rap is mind numbing. Some decent new bands but don't hear much rock on the radio, just 'popular' indie or alternative, whatever it's called. I'm a fairly young guy, born in mid 90s. My parents never introduced me to rock music, I started listening myself. Setting aside the argument about Fair Use (Rick's videos are in no way a substitute for listening to the music, nor do they take away from the experience of the original art), how do all these rights-holders expect young people to find out about the music? It saddens me that rock is dying, but how is it supposed to survive if the people holding the rights can't see what's in front of them.

      @@clarissabeattie8263 Hey Hey, My My...Rock n' Roll can never die.
      Well, Neil wasn't entirely correct about that because it has died so far as the music business is concerned. I can't think of a single rock star in the world of popular music that even has an appreciable presence in the ugly world of celebrity gossip, or even in the less ugly world of online fanzines. Back in U2's heyday, there was the usual blather of "hey, what's Bono up to?" Before that, I'm sure there was a ton of chatter about Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, and so forth. This attention now goes entirely to pop Divas and hip hop posers. Cynical as this sounds, that is a barometer of how far rock has fallen. But then again, a couple hundred years ago classical music was THE music of the western world. Now it's a niche taste for a narrow demographic. Like classical music, jazz, and so forth, all of which are well past their peak, rock won't entirely fade away....

      As someone who was born into the Rock n' Roll era, I can tell you that rock is not dead. It just will never progress. It has become like fine art that will never be replicated. Just as orchestras tend to due the classics, artists will do the same if they are smart. If you look at the ages of most of the early 70s artists, they were all born around 1947. They would have been 11 years old when Elvis went into the Army. This marked the end of Rock n' Roll. The music from 1958-1964 was awful. It was no surprise that young American artists turned to Country Music and British kids looked to Blues. Hence you have Eagles and Zepplin. Anyone born after 1960 grew up in an era of great music, but they ended up listening to Kiss and Michael Jackson. The best example of where music should go is R.E.M. They were able to capture the sounds of the 60s and 70s and make it sound fresh. Listen to "Orange Crush" and "The One I Love". Then listen to The Yardbirds. That is why they were the last great Rock band.

    • @josephschmoe9095
      @josephschmoe9095 3 роки тому +1

      @@Janko1972 I disagree with your basic premise. In saying rock is "dead," I mean in a worldwide commercial and social sense, not that nobody plays it anymore. Frankly, I haven't seen any "progression" in hip hop for at least 20 years, nor in the pop diva garbage. But that music is not dead in the sense I think is most relevant to generic discussions of what music is dead and what isn't.
      My opinion is that every once in a while a somewhat crude form of music gets popular, knocks the music-by-numbers (today, music-by-computers) junk off the charts, and flourishes for a number of years as the artists mature and innovate. I think all pop music now is past its peak in that regard, including what tops the charts. So what you have is a phase where mindless easy listening dance music, whatever social statement pretensions lurk beneath masquerading as something hard-edged, dominates the music industry because the herd is perfectly content to put on familiar-sounding party music and dispense with it until the next party. I'm sure there's a few people poring over each note of their favorite pop record looking for nuances, or just chilling out to it for a couple hours while they do *nothing* else (like work), but my bet is that those who do are far less a percentage than rock, rap, jazz, blues, trance , etc fans did in the respective heydays of those forms.

As a music teacher, you expose your students to examples of what is best in music so that those students can be inspired to bring out the best in themselves through their own musical expression. As a college English teacher, I can’t imagine teaching students what makes great writing without studying the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Whitman, Faulkner, Austen, and countless others. While the impulse is to think that the musicians who block you are being shortsighted, we should remember that not everyone who uses the music you discuss does so for the same purpose and with the same intent as you do. What is the solution to the problem? That would take more discussion than a comment allows. In the end, however, every problem has its solution; of that there is no doubt.

    Thanks a billion for keeping me interested in music NOW!
    (had to come back and add this - I did 5 years in public radio in Canada - even after being a live music club owner, and a festival owner//promoter - I learned sooooo much about copy rights and intellectual property rights! And I’m all about the artist getting payed fairly and justly - but there HAS to be a line in the sand!

    Whenever we have this discussion, all I can picture is 12 year old me, sitting in front of aa stereo speaker with my cheap little Realistic cassette recorder making the worst quality homemade mix tapes off the local FM radio station. With all the DJ chatter over top the beginning and ending of songs, or maybe me being late on hitting the "Record " button and missing the start of the song. But no matter the poor quality, I would listen to the tapes over and over and inevitably I would use my paper route money to go out and buy the latest album by the band whose song I fell in love with. UA-cam is just the mix tape for kids today. They can listen to songs and be exposed to artists they'd otherwise never hear of, resulting in them perhaps buying a CD or paying to download an album. It's a win win and I don't for the life of me understand why the corporate level folks can't see that.

    • @ObnosisJones
      @ObnosisJones 3 роки тому +3

      Precisely! I can't count the number of purchases I made this way. How much music would have been sold if the record companies had never allowed music to be played on the radio, instead of giving free records to the DJs and even slipping money under the table at times to get their music heard by potential buyers. UA-cam is just another form of radio. Take the money, just don't block!

      The newer bands with younger management, and I say this as a major label artist, actually feel pressure to “go viral” because the fresh suits understand that visibility is just as important as the music itself. The problem now is that a lot of them think that the online visibility is MORE important than the music. Like WAY more. Which it probably is sadly if you’re just trying to get rich quick as a meme. I can think of a lot of huge new artists that started out as a viral joke that had nothing to do with music 🙃

      @@impitt28 Yes I realize that. I do it myself sometimes. The point is, most people aren't willing to spend hours ripping the audio from UA-cam videos. Especially for bands like Led Zeppelin that have such a huge catalog of music. Much more likely that the kids rip a few songs, really dig it, and then eventually make peripheral purchases of CDs, downloads, vinyl, concert DVD, etc.

      There might be system to it. Corporate monoliths have fascist tendencies that express themselves via erasing of history because the past stuff is inconvenient and an obstacle to full implementation of the new stuff. This is for example expressed in movie business with the trend of making reboots and remakes under the original title. It is pretty much an overwrite attempt. You could even mention Nazi book-burning or the Cultural 'Revolution' in China. This tactic is so old, the ancient Romans tried (quite successfully) to use the name of Jesus and associate it with their greenlighted ideology instead of what he actually represented, thereby overwriting that, which was better than censoring a popular name altogether.
      In this messed up world, corporate business does not WANT the old stuff to be very popular, because it is less simplistic, less easily controllable, disturbs the indoctrination patterns that are optimized for maximum profit through minimal effort and friction. (It is of course ultimately self-defeating, but fear makes stupid.)

      Oh, the rich hypocrisy of rich hypocritical Rock n' Rollers. Rock started out being played on "underground Rock" - small, low-powered College stations, broadcasting whole albums (the way these albums were DESIGNED to play) in the middle of the night, FOR FREE - for the exposureand, later (as the F.M. bandwidth began to be populated by more and more "Underground Rock" stations, while all of the 'regular' artists and D.J.s were using A.M. radio - all all that had been available through WWII, and long into the 1960's. People forget this. The bandwidth on F.M. was great enough to allow STEREO broadcasts of entire albums - Rock heaven - so more and more people began to use it. These albums all STARTED OUT being recorded, with small audiences (mostly groups of hippies and college students), for FREE - over these tiny College stations, just to get an audience. Now that this model has made all of them as rich as Emperors, they will fight to the death of their music to expose it to a new generation on essentially the same model. They aren't smart - they're not gods - and their music WILL DIE if it isn't exposed to college students with very little money, but who will BUY the music, if you let them hear it, and it's good enough - to their ears - to hear again, and own. It's like the ABSENCE of "Deja Vu All Over Again," and this music - WILL - DIE - WITH - THEM, if they refuse to understand that just as they were in the "old days," they need to be INTRODUCED - and listening free will NOT make people never want to own it. They really haven't figured this out by NOW?! Jesus, their breathtaking hubris, and greed, will kill all of their music. Each new generation is a time to humble yourself, and introduce your skills to people who have not heard it before. So HUMBLE yourselves - or don't, if you want your entire body of your life's work to die with you. It's no skin, really, off anyone else's nose but the artists themselves. F@ck them. They don't want to start like all new artists, believing they are beyond it - but to young audiences that haven't heard them, they ARE 'new' artists. Adapt or die, mo@@fu@@ers.

      It’s the old, moronic management and legal teams of these bands. Living in the 1970s music biz. They don’t understand that by blocking they erasing their artists from history. Brian May himself most likely has no clue it’s going on and may not be able to stop it even if he did, depending on the legal entanglements that still surround legacy recordings. Jimmy Page OTOH has retained much greater control and the ability to react personally ...which it sounds like he actually did. ‘What makes Led Zep Great” ?
