Definite & Indefinite Articles

- Sometimes using terms when you're learning a language can hurt more than it helps. This is possibly one of those times. But we need to refer to stuff somehow, right?
In today's lesson, I go over Definite & Indefinite Articles in Spanish. If you don't know what those are, join the club. Even when I learned Spanish, since I learned on my own, I never knew what those were.
Bottom line, it doesn't really matter, as long as you know how to use them.
A definite article is simple "the". When you say "the cookie", everybody knows exactly which cookie is being talked about. Which cookie you want is definite.
The opposite of that, an indefinite article is when you say "a cookie". Now, you are just saying give me "a" cookie among the many cookies. Which cookie you want is NOT definite.
In the plural form, the indefinite article is basically "some" or "a few". I explain it all in the video and of course, give you the lowdown on the Spanish equivalents.
So watch the video, do the Articles Worksheet available @ spanishdude.co... and leave me a comment or message me if you have any questions at all or need some clearing up.

English not your first language? Subtitles (CC) available--not the automatic ones, I upload them myself.

Praise Him, indeed. And good for you. I’m 42ish and Just started learning too.
Yo, I'm an American and Moroccan so I already know 2 languages, but was forced into learning Spanish at my school in Texas and don't understand absolutely anything in Spanish so I wanted to thank you as someone who can explain it really easily.
OMG!!!! WHERE WERE YOU ALL ALONG? THANK YOU. Im 40 years old learning spanish and feeling like the grey hairs are coming one by one. Thank God I am in my senior year; Public Health Education but I have been dodging Spanish for the entire 4 years but now it catch up on me cause I have to take it lol. You are going to be my Spanish saviour. Thanks again,
I'm from Chile, and watching this video was quite interesting but very funny at the same time😂❤️
Your videos are brill. I swear i have learned more by watching a couple of hours of your videos than i did in two years of GCSE Spanish. I never knew how to conjugate verbs, how to identify male or female nouns or how to change the 'the' or 'a' to match the noun. And you speak slowly as well which gives my brain a chance to digest the information without having to keep pausing the video to make sense of it all. You've bagged yourself a subscriber. Thank you
SO helpful! Thank you! Going into Spanish II and needed some refreshers, your videos are awesome!
Leslie Upton Thank you ! I'm glad you like them! Good luck in Spanish 2 ! Let me know if you're struggling with something that I don't have videos about yet. I want to have all the hard stuff from Spanish 1 and 2 covered here.
Omg you have no idea how easy you made this for me Thank You!! so much
+Josh162 Awesome! Glad to hear it. Thanks for the message!
My son of 9 in India was greatly benefited with this video. GRACIAS :)
Very helpful videos! Only critique would be to sort out the volume levels (intro and outro are significantly louder than the meat of the video). Other than that, extremely helpful.
+rrr777www Thank you! And thank you! I think I have the volume better on later videos. This was an early one.
Hablo español y cuando necesites alguna ayuda con el idioma creo que te podría ayudar para que sigas realizando tu trabajo, Good job!
I am Spanish and I love when a people who don't is Spanish or Latino talk spanish
La sala, el apetito, las aguas, el agua, el salero, la jirafa, el elefante, los pájaros, el amigo, la amiga, los trastes, los tristes, las agujas, el sabor, el favor, los anticuados, el árbol, la servilleta, el oso, la gata, etc.
how do I know which to use for words such as apple or school? How do I know if it is masculine or feminine?
Literally helping me trough high school thank you so much I understand it so much better!!!
¡Gracias!
¡Este video me ayudó a comprender mejor este tema!
I think that's how you say it...
I meant to say Thanks. this video helped me understand the topic better
OK so, in my Spanish class my teacher uses an indefinite or definete article on the word every time its used, even when the actually word the or a is even needed. Is that how it works or is that jut my teacher???
+Sisistar It doesn't work like that, a noun in Spanish can be used without the el or la. But it's good practice to say the nouns with el or la when you're learning them. Because that tells you the gender of the noun, which is crucial. Your teacher is doing the right thing I'd say.
This is the only Mexican guy that I trust to teach me Spanish
Yes! Smart man.
The Spanish Dude this really helped me out a lot. Thanks
This is truly amazing, I thank you very much for this video, it has helped me out a lot
Omg gracias! ^.^ My professor had me all confused. So helpful.
Yo why is this guy better at teaching than my college professor who is Mexican
Great lesson. Thank you for your effort. Appreciate ya.
Do you have one on when to use definite articles (when it is different from English). I have seen (and read) the definite article is used when a word is used in a general sense (i.e. I have faith = Tengo la fe) but I still can't seem to get that down. What does "general sense" mean?
very useful, but more pictures will be useful. Great video
in almost all of ur videos, u say oh dont get hung up on this, u dont need it. so,what do i need?
Thank You! This helps a lot!!!!!!!!!!
+sang woo Chun You're welcome! I'm glad =)

Very good.
my teacher out for a week got us dooin this shi
Gee whiz! Why makes things more complicated?
What's the history of creating the word "the" in four ways?
Deborah Marchant there no 4 ways is the same way adapted to several cases. like in english coming from the word one. a apple, one apple. but in spanish it say it the same way for both cases. una manzana. el the just changed the way to adapt to the right gender and plural.
and there are mor forms. wait to hear LE an LES for an example.
anyone here from marshal highschool?
Your spanish is so english in the beginning haha

Holy Shit! This is so helpful and hilarious. Honestly, a life saver. Keep on keeping on!
Hamdiya A Thank you! I'm glad it helped!
Sorry, but again, there is an exception: If a female word starts with the sound A and the first syllable is the strong one (agua, águila, hada, hacha) you use EL and UN instead of LA and UNA (actually, you can use UNA, but UN is better). So you would have: El águila, las águilas, un águila, unas águilas.
Its similar to your difference between A and AN and the two different pronunciations of THE.
no
Es "la hada"
You said it better than I was about to do. Your detractors may want to consult the "Diccionario de la lengua española" via the website of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, or the Real Academia Española, e.g.: dle.rae.es/?id=1BKpQj3
or SpanishDict, e.g.: www.spanishdict.com/translate/hada
Nor does an example such as "la hadita" contradict you, because the suffix moves the stress away from the first syllable.
Local colloquialisms may differ, and if they persist long enough and spread widely enough, they may change the rules.
Spanish speaker here, confirming what these guys just said. It's "el hada".
Hey, we watch this in class and.... TEACHER IS YOU ARE WATCHING THIS AND YOU SEE THIS. HA I WAS STUDYING😊
That's awesome!
This video teaches me not only Spanish but English again LOL, gracias
Who had to watch this in spanish
This needs more views! This helped a ton!
jackson madden If I help one person, that's enough for me. So you are enough. Thank you for telling me. I appreciate it. Keep watching, I have lots of videos coming out in the coming weeks from Mexico.
Gringo Español You explain it way better than Spanish teachers do. Im gonna start watching all of your videos..helps me a lot in class so THANX!!!
I am looking this video for learning English because I don’t understand Indefinite nouns and definite nouns in English lol 😂
You make it so simple.I am in a college course for the entry level but it is not being taught at an entry pace. I feel like I am being water boarded. I am swallowing some but the is some much trying to be shoved down my throat, the stuff i can not swallow it really hurting me on my grades. Jesus should not have used the term swallow. Oh well, going to swallow some damn beer now. Thanks again.
You have earned yourself a new subscriber! Thank you for being easy to understand and upfront with everything!
My pleasure! Glad you found the video helpful.
Dude, I’ve been struggling with Spanish and you just made it simple for me. Thanks Gringo!
Jimmy T
Good explanation of definite articles. Its great to have the worksheets too.!
Glad you like them!
Aww was Jordan sick while the making of this video? I loved it! Helped clear so many things up!
My teacher says it's pronounced jo instead of yo
But thanks still
your teacher is wrong when they say a closed-minded, definitive statement like that. it's pronounced different from country to country and person to person.
Ok
It depends on the region. There is no right or wrong. People from South America pronounce Yo with a J like Jo, especially in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay... and in the Caribbean Yo.
Just found out this video. Sorry but speaking Spanish with an English accent doesn't sound good. You're a teacher after all.
Awesome video I finally understand it thank you so much.!! GRACIAS:)
Gringo espanol😂 This is perfect👌🏼
Hey there I recently went to Colombia for a month and met some really amazing friends I am now enrolled back in Arizona into Spanish classes and this video helped me immensely it was easy to understand clear and concise and I think you have more of a gringo accent than I do LOL but thank you very much I liked and subscribed have an awesome day keep making great videos
Thank Christ I fucking hate Spanish homework
Thank you! Better than my shit Spanish teacher.
Anyone else have a Spanish test today
Lol como habla español
My test says window pencil chair and idk what to pick I'm so lost I'm gonna fail how is that feminine or muscline
Wait for the word "agua"
EL agua fríA
Or "alma"
EL alma rotA
The article for that kind of words is male article, but if you want to put an adjective, it has to be a female adjective...
Spanish is so weird if you see it from other perspective.
I'm gona get a 100 in Spanish.
Soy ardilla

Nice intro👌🤤🤤🤤
Great video bro
terron farmer

I get it. I don't envy you one bit. Let me just tell you this: it gets better. School is something to get through. Life is so much better. But, you gotta make it that way! Good luck =)
Cool 😎. Thx for clarifying the indefinite articles!
You make learning Spanish so awesome. Just one question, like in English we use 'an' in front of nouns ending with vowels, is there a specific rule to use 'an' in Spanish?
very helpful video sir . please clear the use of a and an articles as its very confusing as per English grammar rules, where we r sure to use an with vowels but in Spanish there is no such rule....please sir
LOL... thanks a lot this is getting me through middle school! thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much!!!! This truly helps a lot!!!! :D
Glad I found this channel, you've got yourself another subscriber. :-)

gringo espanol 😂😂
Amazing content and instruction. However, your pronunciation...in each video I viewed, truly sounds like a Gringo.
I'm a gringo!
is he triggered
thanks a lot
I think there is an error in your articles worksheet:
10. the problem
answer: 10 Los problemas
"Problema" is a masculine noun, so the translation "Los problemas" is right. ¡Saludos!
