- Located around 30 miles/48km south of central London, in the county of West Sussex, is the town of Crawley.
The name Crawley is believed to be derived from an old Saxon name from the 5th century - 'Crow's Leah', meaning a crow-infested clearing. In 1202 King John granted Crawley a market charter.
For several centuries it remained a very small town, registering a population of just 210 on the first census in 1801. Prior to this, Crawley had served as a coaching stop between London and Brighton for horse-drawn carriages. One such example of the architecture of this era can be seen just after the 1-minute mark on Crawley High Street. The George Hotel (now the Ramada Crawley Gatwick), dating back to the 15th century, was one of the country's most famous coaching inns in its heyday. The beam structure outside is a replica gallows.
The construction of a turnpike road between London and Brighton in 1770 allowed Crawley to prosper. The arrival of the railway would follow in 1841 in the form of the Brighton Main Line.
After the Second World War, Crawley was identified as a suitable location for a New Town, which was a programme to relocate those whose houses had been bombed during the Blitz. Hence as we see in the video, virtually everything outside of the High Street takes on a 20th century grid-like design. Queen's Square was opened in 1958 by The Queen herself. Crawley's population went from below 10,000 just after the war to over 100,000 today.
Legendary rock band The Cure formed in Crawley in 1978.

I lived in Crawley for 7 years from 2002 - 2009. I will always have a soft spot for it as it was my first taste of independence when I went to work for Monarch Airlines. I took for granted everything it offered as a town and the surrounding area.
Thanks so much. Crawley xentrr was a
favorite of mine to checkout when i was working as cabin crew for EK like 11 yrs back. I remember an asda that was closeby
Proud to be a Crawley resident!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Lol
@@Alan-ou2id go in E13 1day and you won't laugh anymore lol
Loooool what a dump
me too my friend
Crawley has something of a ‘reputation’ being a new town.
But it’s remarkable that the original ancient heart of the community still retains some very historic timber buildings…
I was born there in 1964 and remember those shops looking fresh and new. I think there was a department store in what is now Wilco (Queensways?). I alao remember the town clock with the little model cars that moved around a track when it chimed.
Spent some very happy years working and raising a young family in Crawley. Circumstances forced a move, but always look forward to returning and visiting friends.
Another beautiful walk
Hey, thanks for watching!

Great walking tour
Hey, thanks for watching!
Awesome sharing 😊❤️
Thanks for watching!
Nice video! Thanks a lot. Have been twice to Crawley (in 2018 and 2019) for the Snooker English Open. I stayed in the Barrington Lodge, a really nice place. I liked Tilgate Park a lot.
OK, it is not a town I would say I go for a weekend to enjoy, but in a way it caught me, and really, I am sure to get back there one day when all this Covid problems are over.
Great walk 👍
Cheers!
I lived in Crawley Northgate from Sept, 1992- Feb 1995 and had worked on our Government project at TTSL. Came back in 2016 but the vibrancy was not there. Had nice neighbors (Fred and family) and made some badminton friends (Maria and the co). I wonder if they are still there. My wife and I have many fond memories there. Crawley FC was not as big as they are now. I can't remember the name of the pub at the Parade.
Very nice video.
Thanks for watching!
I grew up in Crawley between early seventies to 91. Not really been there much the last 30 years. Seems very empty now. Used to be bustling!
It is extremely crowded now. The video seems to have been mad early morning. During the day there's mad rush. I visited two years ago.
The town has some good stuff and nice lakes plus a good punch up at the jubillee oak
Cool video👍
Hey, thanks!
The Cure
Where Malice aka Easy Cure aka The Cure formed 🖤🖤🖤 hope to visit one day
I lived in Crawley from 2002 to 2006 and loved it there. Used to live in Brighton road in ravendene court... not sure if its still there that apartment complex. I worked for Virgin holidays which I know have closed down in Crawley.
I think it is, I’ll check next time I walk down there, there’s a lot of apartments with similar sounding names. I live here today and it’s still a nice place but there’s some changes I would make if I was in charge.
Nice place,my late father formerly lived in 26 calvin walk bewbush crawley,is a nice place, fantastic
I will be relocating to Crawley in a few months, so thanks for the video. Hopefully my future videos on the town and its surrounding area won't be too disappointing, lol.
Ah thanks, and best of luck with the move!
I would advise against moving there
@@fundzreal7680 oops, you spoke too late. I just moved into my new place here a few days ago, lol.
@@paulyiustravelogue hows the experience in crawley?
@@conathlnzo8126 been moved into town for almost a month now, and my experience here is mostly positive. This is a family-friendly town. Sure, it isn't a big city with major shopping malls and such, but you get almost everything you need here in town for relatively cheaper prices. I can also see the local economy is slowly picking up here, with new shops opening up within the town centre area; as well as the Overline Building redevelopment project in progress etc.
Where is Robert Smith? xD
It looks nice. I thought it was supposed to be rough ? Is it a nice place to live.?
Nice vid. My last name is Crawley and have always wondered if I have any kin that came from that area. I'd like to visit it someday. I live in Texas, so a bit of a commute lol.
Ah nice, thanks for finding my video! Yeah I wouldn't recommend going to Crawley all the way from Texas, lol. Unless maybe you combined it with a trip to London or something.
I wouldn't suggest coming here, it's awful, nothing interesting either
The last public hanging was carried out in Crawley... see if he was related to you. That pillar is still there.
Crawley means field of crows so it could refer to anywhere
My girlfriend has gone there a wonder that i still remember heri realy miss her
Robert Smith & the cure brought me here
Do you have a accommodation any one .
The Cure's land.
The pub where they made their debut is The Railway formally The Rocket.
It's at the very top of the high street where the video begins near the level crossing.
Creepy.
