I visited both Antietam and Gettysburg in 1995. While I understand the hold Gettysburg has on the hearts and minds of Americans, other than the blustery weather than day that kept my family in the car except by the Burnside Bridge, I enjoyed Antietam much more. Sharpsburg is still just a small town. There's a feeling of peace and solemnity; the isolation works to its benefit.

I have visited Antietam 2 times, the first being 4 years ago this year at the Illumination of Antietam and let me tell you it was awe inspiring, over 20,000 luminaries lit throughout the battlefield to mourn all those who died during the bloodiest day in American history! The 2nd time was with a good friend who is also like me a Civil War buff, walking in the bloody lane, you feel the presence of your comrades in the Union Army around you, here the orders being given, you can see in your mind's eye the butchery around you as bodies are strewn throughout an area that literally became synonymous with death!

Love the effort and enthusiasm to preserve and protect the battlefield as it once was. The then and now photos at 48 minutes in are haunting and amazing all at the same time. Keep up the good work and thank you!

Thanks for that explanation about the Burnside bridge. I visited two years ago and must have misunderstood because I was very disappointed to learn that it was not the original; however, I am glad to have learned that it was a preserved version, not a replacement that I saw.
This presentation was very insightful because often as visitors who only attend a park maybe a few times, we don't think about the amount of effort that goes into preserving them and also the amount of foot traffic that the parks see every day.
