    It’s interesting this lens is stabilized. I wish camera companies would make more stabilized prime lenses, not just zooms.

    I agree with everything you said about this lens. I've been using one for the past couple of years with my 6D as my everyday walk around lens. It's sharp and IS is a bonus, IMO it makes up for being a little slower than 35 f/1.4 lenses of all manufacturers!

      Cool. There is also a 24mm version amzn.to/2IXeWya if you need wider than 35mm on a crop sensor, only downside is that it's f2.8 whereas the 35mm is f2. But great lenses cause of the IS if doing any handheld work

    • @LouisLuzuka
      @LouisLuzuka 6 років тому

      i had no idea that existed holy shit what thats crazy, i love that its IS ahah i have a 24mm pancake lens and i treat it like a 35mm crop even if its closer to a 38mm and i wanted to have a 35mm and 50mm combo which is basically a 24mm and 35mm on a crop (56mm) because i use the canon sl2 and i love the size but with all this effort it seems better to just go full frame and save up for those versions but its great to know that it has IS i've learned that IS saves the shot no matter what

      Ray Ortega hey Ray, thanks for the review. Chris can you chime in also? I’m starting a podcast type setup in my home. Mostly just me telling stories on camera with some b roll cut into the footage. Do you have any recommendations for what focal length would be good for indoors? Would you go with a 24 and 35 primes or do you think the sigma 18-35 is the best choice? I have a lot of lenses but mostly f 4 and I don’t think it would work well for my needs. Please let me know which focal length would you suggest for indoor video, interview setup? Thanks again!!

    • @obiwanmartyn
      @obiwanmartyn 8 років тому +1

      +Laugh To Success it will be the full frame equivalent of a 56mm lens crop senors are actually closer to super 35mm sensor size (cinema camera sensor size) you won't get as much shallow depth of field as full frame DSLR but it will be close enough and most feature films don't even shoot below F.4 anyway because pulling focus at wider apertures is a pain in the ass that is where lighting comes in it may look like f.2.8 or in some cases 1.8 when in fact it is f.4 this lens damn near perfect for everyday shooting

    • @jalexb915
      @jalexb915 6 років тому

      Closer in size to a Super 35mm sensor (APS-C) however there is a pretty noticeable difference in dynamic range in a Canon 80D vs Canon C100

  • @randomgeocacher
    @randomgeocacher 9 років тому +1

    I imagine the IS will be bit more impressive on a full frame where get away with the crop (zoom) factor. It's probably one of the most interesting Canon lenses as 35mm is a great field of view, and IS & f/2 are great additions.
    For some silly reason I still don't own a Canon 35 while almost all my analog shots are Minolta 35/2.8.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega 9 років тому

      Thanks. The wider the shot the better the stabilization for sure. It's probably not the best lens but overall it packs a nice punch putting together a lot of cool elements.

      Zack Corley the XHA1 does let you attach other lenses. Unless you have an adapter that you bought for attaching other lenses to the lens that is on the body. This would work with any Canon adapter but it would also need the electronic controls to adjust the aperture.

    Hi and thanks for the video. I use the Canon 70d (crop), with the canon ef 40mm (Pancake) and till then has been working, once i shoot people/half body/portraits, in a smal studio, and dont have to stay with my back as close as it gets to the wall, how it was for example with the Canon 50mm f/1.8... My question would be if getting this ef 35mm f/2, would i get some advantage in comparison to the 40mm (pancake)? If yes could you please tell me how or what would be? Im just looking forward to upgrade my lens kit, using the canon 70d cam, by getting a not so expensive new one, but still get some upgrade/advantage in comparison to the ones i already have - the ef 40mm and the 50mm 1.8 (as i said before, this one has a good quality, but my small studio doenst allow me to go that far to get teh ideal shoots... Thanks very much

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega 9 років тому

      Zizi Possi Marquinhos Vital probably not. It won't be much wider. They have a 28mm version which would give you a little more room to work with but is probably not good for portraits as the wider you the wider it will make your subject look www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/843011-USA/Canon_5179B002_EF_28mm_f_2_8_IS.html/prm/alsVwDtl/BI/5841/KBID/6710 (referral link). The main advantage of this lens is for video shooters who want to handhold their camera and get a wider aperture all while remaining compact.

    Hi Ray!
    Nice review and this is very timely, because i was looking to get one!
    What's your opinion between this 35mm and the sigma 30mm 1.4 ART? (I just saw that you got one, in the gear used to make your video!)
    It will be really great to know, if both are approximately same and also i heard lot of bad things about the front and back AF focus on Sigma lenses mounted on Canon DSLR, who aren't really resolved with the sigma dock unfortunately..
    Keep up the great work and thanks in advance.
    J

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega 8 років тому +1

      Thanks, Julian. This 35 is so great because it has IS and still a fast aperture. But if you don't need IS, the 30mm ART is a great lens as well. I think the quality is probably too close to tell between the two, at least to me, but both are great lenses. I personally would rather have the IS but if you need 1.4 the 30mm might be the answer.

      Something else I just thought of, this Canon (links in the description) is also full frame! So if you ever moved up to a full frame sensor, this lens would move with you. The Sigma is for crop sensors only.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega 9 років тому +1

      David Gibson : Elevation is a Must thanks! For wireless I don't really have a recommendation that is cheap. I haven't seen a cheap option that is worth it yet. I like the Sennheisers that I use. You might want to think about going with a wired lav and recorder combo and just syncing the audio in post production. This makes you wireless. It's a little more work but is even better than wireless in terms of quality and performance (no potential for RF interference). One nice option for this is using this mic podhelp.me/SmartLavPlusBH with your smartphone as the recorder.

Now I'm really geared towards buying this canon instead of Sigma's version and even more likely to buy this over the L series 35mm. Also I think this an EF lens as opposed to a EF-S lens. Sigma's mount for Canon bodiies specify whether it need be a full frame or crop APS-C. ..... I think.

      the best lenses for videography are:

      2- Canon 17-55mm f2.8 is usm
      3- Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 SP Di VC
      4- Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 SP Di VC
      but if you have a lot of money, you can change the list above by this one:
      1- Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L iii ( new version)
      2- Canon 24-70mm f2.8 Lii USM
      3- Canon 70-200mm f2.8 iS Lii USM
      if you have these lenses, you are the king. try to see some reviews, comparison and video tests and you will see by yourself.

      cool thanks for the respond, i saw your video on the canon 80D , in the 4 past year i have the canon 550D + EFS 18-135 lense + sigma ef 50mm 1.4 usm
      and i want to upgrade, you think that the canon 80D with this lense will be a good combination?

      Video was shot in many parts so the settings are always different but I was using the 70D and this is how I set it up ua-cam.com/video/fYVHbBkArJA/v-deo.html
