- The MK19 was designed in the mid-1960's and was extensively used during the late stages of the Vietnam war. The MK19 was the first automatic grenade launcher designed for ground use. In the USA it is designated as a grenade machine gun. It is a blowback operated weapon that fires high velocity 40mm grenades. The MK19 is still appreciated greatly for its capability to fire high numbers of 40-millimeter grenades precisely out to a distance of approximately 1,500 meters (approx 4,921 feet). Because the round can pierce two inches of armor, it can damage or destroy lightly armored vehicles. On impact, the grenade can kill anyone within a five-meter (approx 16 feet) radius and wound anyone within a 15-meter (approx. 49 feet) radius. MK19 has seen considerable wartime service since including operations in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War , and the Lebanon War as well as the American involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. There have been reports that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have received a new batch of MK19s from the United States to help the country fend off a potential Russian invasion.

390 RPM is what it’s actually capable of, problem is the ammo crates they come in only come with 48 grenades per can so you’d have to link several together to achieve that 390 RPM mark. I was a MK19 gunner through Iraq, that was my baby. 😝

There's a six shot variety that's the realistic version of handheld. You'd need a fat power suit with a backpack magazine to carry around a mark 19. Doable but that's gonna be a major r and d project. The six shot you can buy off the shelf.

I carried this alone many times in Iraq 2003-2004...i can tell you this, as a MK19 gunner. I loved it but as a Gun Truck in a town or city with close buildings...i had to ditch the gun and use a 249 to cover rooftops for fear of being too close to impact area...but there is nothing like the real deal
I guess the only real drawback of this monster is its limited endurance. Because holy shit guys, automatic grenade launcher.
You need a truck to carry the ammo.
After more than three combat deployments I can tell you I almost always took the 50 Cal over the MK19. It’s great for defense positions honestly that’s about it. I can only think of a few times I actually used it and yes it was for personal during an ambush.

The striker cant be in an over watch situation that requires Ground Pounders
The amount of cheeto rounds I had to shoot for inventory during training had me licking my fingertips due to all the cheeto dust.
Everyone loves the 50.cal but honestly this is the weapon I would love if ever having a choice. Playing with this baby in basic training was a dream.

Blowback is one type of auto firing mechanism. Others include long recoil, short recoil, and gas.

The mk. 19 is a drama queen; "oh, if you use CLP on me, I'm deadlined because I start turning funny colors and need to go to depot to get parts replaced".
It's nice to be able to toss grenades that far that fast, but you've never known stress like being in combat and needing to manually crank out a grenade from the barrel because ATK (or whoever) managed to send out a round that only got a few grains of powder put into the case. (Like: "man I hope I don't get shot in the ass while doing this." Then "man I hope I don't drop this damn grenade." Then "okay, I wasn't shot in the ass, and I have a firm grip on this spicy tennis ball of shredding shrapnelific death, *now* what do I *do* with it?")
Much prefer an M240B.
That system has been around 25-30 yrs or more. As a MP Squad Leader from 1998-2002, I had four of those guns on my HUMVEEs. What’s new about them now?

Not a problem, call for fire to a battery of 155s and then mop up with Mk19 and M240s. They’re just targets of opportunities.

Was issued first in 1968 as a Navy gun on PBRs in Vietnam. Also wedged into a chin turret on the "Huey Hog" variant of the UH-1.
the mispronunciations in this video are hilarious, and the animation of it firing showing the entire cartridge and round being fired is funny as well.
It's a helluva lot of fun to shoot. But the butterfly trigger is sensitive. The slightest touch will send two rounds down range before you know it.

The MK19 fires 325-375 rounds per minute at 690 fps.
I thought the MK XIX was a cool piece of gear back when I was in the Marines in the 90s, but was fairly high-maintenance and prone to jams.

60 grenades per minute? you are wrong sir. it's MUCH faster than that, and it doesn't use gun powder, so the barrel doesn't suffer from overheating. You can just hold that butterfly trigger down and have a subway sandwich.
Actually the mk19 can fire far more than 60 grenades per minute. It’s max rate of fire is 390.

Two reasons I can think of
1- Hard targets (i.e. armored vehicles, bunkers, helicopters, etc)
2- Percision explosives (kind of contradictory, but blowing up a house is better than the whole block)
It’s an area weapon mostly. Now when I say area that could mean small or large depending how many rounds you want to throw at something really.

They are awful. The amount of LSAT required to keep these things operational…. You’d be lucky if it doesn’t lock up 60 times per minute. Don’t use them in any area that has dirt. The lubricant turns into straight up mud inside these things.
