Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through UA-cam videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Yeah if you keep an eye at the top right of the screen, you'll see a black and white bar, this is used in British tv to indicate an upcoming advert, you can see it at 8:19
It's almost as if they said "find out which country after the break".
I said the same thing, there was a big blue screen with writing in white text saying exactly that.
The Sumerians were less of a country and more a collection of city states. Basically, they didn't have total control of the land surrounding the cities.
The country on top with a red flag and white cross is the Order of Malta, Rhodes and Cyprus, a Knightly order that once controlled the island of Cyprus, Rhodes and later Malta, before getting conquered by France, colonized by Britain and never reinstated by the Maltese population that prefered a Republic over the old Knight order, it is still kind of recognized as a country with the Vatican city begin one of the most notable, they now do humanitarian work around the world.
The ones on Taiwan and Somaliland are from right to left (screen) South Ossetia, Transnistria and Abkhazia, all tree Russian backed states in post-soviet states, Transnistria in Moldova existing since the brakeup of the USSR, South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia consolidated in 2008 but existing since the 90's.

De Jure and De Facto is a lot more simpler. De Jure just means on papee/by law. De Facto is in reality/practice

The Danish-looking one is *The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta* which is a de jure relic state descended from the Order of The Knight's Hospitaller. It has no territory left.
We do have country music but you're more likely to call that folk music. That is unless you include 'Scrumpy and Western' with the likes of the Wurzels.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are countries. The UK is a union! All those beside NI predate the UK by atleast 1000 years. And their culture had already developed by the 900s. With Welsh (British) being the oldest.

Somaliland is what was British Somalia in the north, the other being Italian Somalia in the east. At no point has Somaliland not been ruling itself. With its own government, police force, military and currency. Westerners just decided the whole thing was Somalia after the wars....
Indeed Somaliland was briefly independent after his independence from Britain.
However Somaliland wasn't forced to join former Italian Somalia it decided to join it.

"Tins of peaches", from the ad, is what Americans would call "cans of peaches". The idea here is that, if you're going to be holed up in a bunker for weeks or months, you're going to need something to eat.
"no it doesn't" - weird, because under the Montevideo Convention Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands (need I really go on?) aren't countries. "no it doesn't". Sure, do a trade deal with Mexico, Italy, see how far you get. "full control" means the EU can force any law it so pleases on its member states without any opportunity to say "no thank you" - there is no concept of states rights in the EU where the EU is in literally any way limited in what it can make members do or the laws it can write for members, and there isn't even an honour system where it stays out of certain areas. That's what it means. US states are more like countries by the definition than say France or Germany are. US states can do independent trade deals with other countries (exemplified by the fact the UK has them with a bunch of US states because Joe Biden is completely bananas and shut down the FTA we were negotiating before he took office, in fact he's refused to do deals with literally any country) and the US federal government is limited in the ways it can write laws for constituent states which is absolutely not the case with the EU.

oh when speaking about countries we got a quite fun song in polish "Limeryki o narodach" (=limericks about nations) by Jacek Kaczmarski, where he goes over some of the most prominent national conflicts and grievances in a poem form. Yes! The fact the English don’t have de jure control of Wales (Thanks to Owain Glyndwr) is why they haven’t and will never add Wales to the Uk flag.
