  • I've been suffering from the post-marathon blues since completing my first 100 mile race. In this video I chat training, getting over the post-marathon blues, what's coming up next and show you some of the gorgeous views Nidderdale has to offer.
    This route goes from Pateley Bridge, up to the Lead Mines, joins the Nidderdale Way, down to Gouthwaite Reservoir and then up a huge hill to Wath. I absolutely loved every, hilly second of it!
    Happy running,
    Nicola :)

    The long/short/fast/slow thing is definitely me, I seem to run everything at approximately the same speed and I know it means I’ll never get faster but I can’t help myself!

      Training with some PT guys really opened my eyes to this because they were doing 50m sprints and I was like WHAT?!?!?!? Nobody does 50m sprints! But I did some sessions with them and it was ACE! Really put the whole thing in perspective. I also think people are worried to run their long runs super slow but it's ace for time on feet and being easier to recover from! 😃

      For years and years I had the same issue! Running everything about the same speed. If I was fitter, that’d be faster, less fit and I’d run slower (and be able to maintain it for less time). Recently I’ve started training based on a schedule drawn up by a coach, and using a power meter to manage my pacing. I still struggle inn making the longer runs a slower pace, but I am getting more ‘structure’ in the sessions. It seems to be helping!

    Completely agree on the back to back longs runs, they really help with that feeling of running on tired legs and getting used to it. Best of luck with the rest of the training for the Dragon 50!

      Thanks 😃 back-to-back runs are so the future for me! They give me so much more confidence than that one long run a week that is runners think we're meant to do?! 🙃

    Another great video Nicola and showing off a little of Nidderdale’s Beauty. So many amazing trails around this area. A great route to try is heading out of Pateley towards Masham but then jump on the trail over to High Skelding and over to Eavestone. From there head through Warsil and on to Brimham rocks. It’s around 16 miles but can be extended by going to Summerbridge and over the trails to Heyshaw and Guisecliffe.

    Some sound advice with the beautiful views! I always find myself running one speed - need to find the button that goes slower when needed and faster other than the finish sprint. Great video, thank you for sharing.

    Lots of great information Nicola...I'm quickly going through your videos and I'll be a little sad when I catch up!! Haha! I have a trail marathon next month...I'm 58 now and trying to avoid the running on tired legs to see how that works. Somewhere I heard someone talk about as you get older keeping the legs fresh is the key so who knows, right! I reckon you're about 20 years younger so I think you're doing it right with back to back runs. I like the saying about long runs too short, short runs too long etc....that is going to stick in my brain forever! (Off to check you on the Run to the Hills Podcast!)

    • @NicolaRuns
      @NicolaRuns  2 роки тому

      It's definitely all about arriving on race day feeling like the legs are fresh so whatever works for you to achieve that. Age plays a part but we're all so different that I really think it's about finding what suits you and your body 😊 I think all the time about the too long/short/fast/slow. I really love it. I'm pleased it resonates with you too 🤗

    Totally get the post run slump, we always try to have stuff in the bag of dreams to look forward to... Weirdly did not get that slump after jurassic challenge - just stayed on the high (and provisionally booked in run to the sea and a 'frolic' so the bag is not empty 😂) x wow that looked hilly but gorgeous, I know we have the beautiful Chesil beach but I have reservoir envy, never run around one (yet) xx keep smiling and please know that your videos inspire me so much and have taught me to find the fun ❤️

    I've got an Airbnb booked in Pateley Bridge at the end of August to have a few days of hilly trail runs (my first ever trip away completely on my own), so was dead pleased to see this video. I won't be going as far as you, but plan to run from the Crown in Pooley Bridge to the Crown Inn at Lofthouse, which looked good on an OS map. Will get my map out tomorrow and look up the lead mines as somewhere to aim for too.

      Running the ridge at the top of Guisecliffe along to two stoops is gorgeous too. Scar House Reservoir is spectacular! Soooooooo many choices! There's a gorgeous little waterfall from Lofthouse on the way to Scar House... So many options! The lead mines are a cool place but I'd head up to Scar House Reservoir if you can 😃😍

    Never fancy doing a more techy video like your nutrition strategy, pacing, other tips? I’d love that. Nice run! Also, did you find a massive decrease in training volume to impact your mood? I worry that my mileage is directly proportional to my mood. Thanks!

    • @NicolaRuns
      @NicolaRuns  2 роки тому +1

      Ooh that's interesting... Maybe... I might start tracking mood vs miles! But I do have fairly low mileage weeks pretty often and haven't noticed a correlation that's obvious. Think mine was more like I didn't know what I was working towards. Nutrition strategy I'll do once I figure it out 🤣 I ran the hundred miler on a few hot cross buns and water with hydration tabs 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ definitely lots to improve on! Pacing is an interesting one, I never believe in negative splits so I'm not sure I'm that conventional... I'm more of a "give it everything you've got because then when you're crawling to the line at least you'll know you gave it everything" 😂

    • @NicolaRuns
      @NicolaRuns  2 роки тому

      Thanks, really looking forward to the race! Compression socks are a funny one. I don't think I'm at the sharp end enough to get any real performance benefit but I do love them for recovery! When I'm running I tend to wear them either when I'm on really tired legs or when it's a hot day so I want to wear shorts but I'm running trails with nettles etc so they give me a bit of protection plus sort of a placebo performance benefit! I do feel faster in them but I think that is probably a placebo... If I'm running back to back long runs then I'll tend to always wear them on the second day. Hope that helps 😃
