James, I love how informative your videos are and that you don't include a lot of useless information. Every word out of your mouth has a purpose. Thank you for sharing your passion for gardening.
This is why I love plants. I can't watch your videos before work or I'm late, even though they're one of the things that put me in a good mood. I'm glad I'm not the only nutcase around. Stay weird.
James, you're hilarious..........."Lull them w/ veggies, gain their confidence, and spring the Electric Daisy on them". What a hoot !! ;-) Love to you and Tuck.
I love that little guy TUCK🐕🐶 Basil is always one of my favorite herbs to grow. I have three types of Thai Basil in my backyard. Holy Basil is so good to stir fry with chicken and garlic and fresh Thai chili. Basil chicken taste so good!! Especially when it's spicy. I love spicy food. Love it as much as I love lil Tuck. Lol
5:31 "oooh beautiful Monarch". Just love your candid appreciation of God's creation. You have inspired me to start a food forest. Thank you James (and Tuck).
OMG!!! I was actually worried for you, and laughing at the same time! I think I would be a little scared of this plant---lol! Thanks for this very entertaining video and being our guinea pig. I would be interested in see you grow more medicine plants :) You never know when a person may need them!
sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
@Raiden Kobe Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
In older Chinese cultures, food was thought of as more medicine, than something you fill your stomach, to prevent hunger. Their food choices were based on individual mental and physical conditions, and not just what they wanted to consume.
James.....I actually started laughing when I saw the pic for the video. We grew the bullseye last year. Oh the fun I had with them at work. I probably ate two pounds of those leaves in my salads. We will grow more next year. My wife is actually getting into the medicinals and edible flowers. Stay safe.
The more I watch you the more hooked I am. You are so knowledgeable on everything it seems. Knowledge is power!! Easily becoming a top fan right here. Keep on keeping on!! 💗
what i'm about to say goes for all foods, including shop food ( actually especially shop/factory made food), when trying something new, make sure you have somebody else nearby that knows what you have eaten so they can get help if you have an allergic reaction or something. (this is not to say don't try it), i'm glad people are trying it.
Hi ! I am happy you planted the toothache plant !! It is native in Brazil and called jambu. They use the leaves in all kinds of soups which are quite tasty. The flowers are really strong and usually reserved for medicinal purposes !
LOL! I about fell out of my chair when you swallowed the first one! Thanks for the laugh! On a more serious note, always preface your talks about herbs with a warning that if someone has NOT done their research on an herb, they should not try it. Especially if they're on medications. Unless you know how that herb will react with your medications, you should not try it.
I ate that before, recommended by my father to try. He had it too when he was young, thank you for sharing as now I know what is the name of this plant!! 😝
What a goof! Watching James try to talk after trying this plant. Thanks man! I've been wondering what herb would help with this. Thanks for all the awesome vids.. ✌
Love how you pronounce some names. Like Borage. In Wisconsin we pronounce it bore age. Lol. So interesting to me different 'speak'. Like erb and herb!! Ha ha. Great video
There were times in my life I could have used the relief this plant might offer. If you've ever chewed your tongue to bits, you know relief is hard to get. I'm going to have to look into this plant. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
I tried this recently as a tea and tincture, it has a lemony zest with tingly numbing sensation. The person who showed me sprayed the tincture on my face and instantly the blood rushed to my face and felt intensely overwhelmed with warm buzzing. So cool!!!
I forgot all about that plant. My uncle gave me a cutting in '03 and it developed into a beautiful little bush. I used to chew and swallow the blooms and never had a bad reaction. I'm going to order some seeds and grow it again next year.
James, you have a great garden there. Did you ever try growing tomatoes in cages? I like using concrete reinforcing wire, I make about a 2-foot wide circle then cut the bottom so I have spikes that stick in the ground. Sometimes I add quarter inch bamboo stakes that you can weave through the squares and secure it to the ground . You don't need to tie up the plants, just weave them through the grid's as it grows the only drawback is that only about four and a half feet tall. So if you like taller plants. You'll have to add an extension. So I cut another one slightly smaller in diameter , and half the height of the first one, and slip it inside the original. Then I secured with either zip ties or wire. Works great for cucumbers also. I am originally from Monmouth county New Jersey, and I was wondering where you live.
JAMES!!! LOL..I was literally holding my breath waiting for you to fall over after you swalllwed that!! Glad you're ok...awesome to know it actually works! :)
I have toothache right now. Just popped a couple of dried flowers I've had from a harvest three years ago. As soon as they rehydrate with saliva they start working. Instant relief :)
OMG 😲 it scared me when you did it the first time! Then you did it again LOL. Good thing you didn’t swallow it then. I’ve been debating getting that plant for my herb garden. I think I will 😁👍
I saw those at Baker Creek! WOW! They really do work? That's awesome. I wonder if you can dehydrate them and they'd work the same? I might have to try that next year. Loved seeing Tuck looking for that nawty groundhog. He's the best guard dog ever! Blessings from NE Missouri!
Your passion and aditude are really inspiring. I'm glad you stayed in Jursey. I can better relate being north of the border. The GF and I have been loving your work and can't wait to use the knowledge you've shared at our new place. Thank you.
Wow, you got a lot different basils. I love them. I put them in a lot dishes. Here is a couple recipes for salad. Cucumber salad: slice the cucumber in half length wise, scoop seeds out, slice the halves in half moon shape in thin slices, put 1/8 cup of rice vine vinegar, 1/8 cup of fish sauce, some cayenne pepper according to your taste, you can use either shallots or garlic, I use shallots, minced 2 clove of shallots and put them in with the cucumber, 1 tsp on sugar, 1 tbsp of fresh lime juice, and chop up handfull of fresh basils and mix everything together. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes in the fridge, walah! You can add a few halves cherry tomatoes in there as well. Ymm.
James, I love your enthusiasm and how kindly you take care of Tuck. I watched you unboxing of all the seed varieties you got from Baker Creek last year. I've wondered how many of the varieties you decided to try this year? 1500 varieties - seems like it would be hard to keep them all straight!
By the way, I love exploring and have freaked myself out a couple of times ( I'm a nurse and know better) by tasting plants out of curiosity. The other day I tasted something to figure out if it was sage and got worried when my mouth went numb. Dumb, but it's hard to resist curiosity sometimes!
Hey James, you've convinced me to change my approach to a large project behind our back yard (stormwater retention pit). Sides are sloped considerably but workable and the soil is red South Carolina clay. Digging is brutal! Anyway, the point of the project is to return that area to wildlife since this sub was dense forest not all that long ago. Critters need their homes back. Started with a few small trees and a number of wildflowers (annual/perennial). Will keep adding little by little but your methods create a much better, healthier and lower maintenance garden. My main challenge will be to figure out a way to keep the chips in place, rather than slide down the hill. Any ideas other than building retention walls?
James be very careful plants r no joke I'm all for it just be careful I wouldn't recommend eating direct like that because u never know your reaction! Keep up the good work
You are only the 2nd person that I have seen grow the Toothache Plant. The other was Papa Pepper. I had never heard of it before him. He didn’t demonstrate it on camera like you did. watched this video and a few others on my plant, they had one flower on it and we had my fiances son try it, He said it was better than orajel. I have few more coming so I bought some vodka to make a tincture...so excited
I grew the toothache plant a few years ago and it didn't grow well for me . If I had a toothache, I would put the flower between my cheek and sore tooth gum. This Jersey heat is making everything grow great but I can only stay outside a little while. My organic food forest is coming along real good and it teaches me to eat better for a healthy planet.
We take those for salad almost everday.. but greener leaves n reddish yellow flower... boil it with salt to take the the numbness a lil bit down.. btw we eat it raw with salt n bamboo shoot(fermented)
We use spilanthes (electric daisy, buzz button, etc) for so many different things. We make a poultice for bug bites, cuts, stings....I make a tincture for sore throat and all sorts of things. My 8 yr old is so used to them and loves them she gets a kick out of eating them. She pops them into her mouth often (and swallows them). The one you picked could have gotten a little bigger. They are more potent when the button is nice and full/large. The leaves can also be used and will have that numbing effect but not as strong. It also alters taste....if you take a buzz button and then eat something acidic like a tomato or coffee, it totally takes the acidic taste away and you are left with nothing but flavor. It's used in Asian cooking to help amplify flavors.
I wish I had learned about a food forest years ago. My health won’t allow me to start something like that but I love hearing about yours 🙂. I absolutely love this idea
Jame's I wish you would do a each season video, fall spring summer winter ...here is what we should be doing to prepare, what to plant, now it's time to, etc etc... that would be so useful
We use it when we have tooth decay. If you like its taste so do you like taste of mustard greens? Yeah, wonderful salad mustard greens (eat with grilled meat), much milder spicy of course but delicious, right? I also like taste of pumkin leaves, pumkin tops, sweet potato tops cook with garlic (stir fried meal). They are in my memories have buttery taste. Yummy I love vegetables so so much. All kind of vegetables I really love your garden. Special harvest videos. Awsome
Natives from the Amazon call this plant “jambu”, and people usually make a bottle of medicine with spirits (sugar cane or cereal spirits) and a few flowers... definitely a mind blowing recreational drink, but also very unique and effective medicine. Looking forward to having my own garden to plant it! ❤️❤️❤️ for Tuck
Thanks for the info just bought the bull's eye and the yellow online... There is a medicinal berry that's so unknown that there is no english name for it. The name is Calligonum Junceum...Me and my entire network are still searching for it.
You had me laughing. You are so funny. Thanks for sharing with us. Tuck looks like he got a haircut. He is so cute. What a little sweetheart. The garden is looking fantastic.
Cool herb James! And great on cam try. Can't wait to try growing it. In South Jersey we have the aquifers that have the best water. I miss the cold clean aquifer water.
James you are worth watching and listening to!
Lol you are so brave! Love seeing Tuck he is such a lil love bug. The best! 💕
James, I love how informative your videos are and that you don't include a lot of useless information. Every word out of your mouth has a purpose. Thank you for sharing your passion for gardening.

I grew the tooth ache plant last year and it came back this year with tons of babies. Mine is also the yellow like yours. It’s sooo cool.
Self seeding or perennial?
@@KaytieBabooah I believe it self seeded.
James, you're hilarious..........."Lull them w/ veggies, gain their confidence, and spring the Electric Daisy on them".
What a hoot !! ;-) Love to you and Tuck.
Thanks for the support and kind words! ❤️
I love that little guy TUCK🐕🐶
Basil is always one of my favorite herbs to grow. I have three types of Thai Basil in my backyard. Holy Basil is so good to stir fry with chicken and garlic and fresh Thai chili. Basil chicken taste so good!!
Especially when it's spicy. I love spicy food. Love it as much as I love lil Tuck. Lol
Basil is the best! Wish I could do more.
5:31 "oooh beautiful Monarch". Just love your candid appreciation of God's creation. You have inspired me to start a food forest. Thank you James (and Tuck).

James starts seeing butterflies, in the sky. LOL!
Haha, I am easily distracted in the garden. Especially when the Monarchs start showing up lol
I've seen those seeds, in Baker Creek's order catalog. I've always wondered about that plant.
sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
@Preston David instablaster :)
@Raiden Kobe Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I bought tooth ache plants seeds but haven't try to grow them yet. After watching you try this plants wow! Definitely will grow them.
"Gain their trust and then give them an electric daisy" 🤣😂
😈👍🏽
Great seeing some medicinal plants. If you are into it I'm definately interested in more videos about medicinal plants. Great vid James ... as always.
thekrrib me too!!!
Electric Daisy! sounds like a killer 70's band name =]
FOOD IS MEDICINE!!
Yes it is, when it's the good stuff 😄
In older Chinese cultures, food was thought of as more medicine, than something you fill your stomach, to prevent hunger. Their food choices were based on individual mental and physical conditions, and not just what they wanted to consume.
Yeah, see Time Magazine's spread on Food as Medicine -- finally, eh! -- the mainline of the mainscream/stream time.com/longform/food-best-medicine/
James.....I actually started laughing when I saw the pic for the video. We grew the bullseye last year. Oh the fun I had with them at work. I probably ate two pounds of those leaves in my salads. I was legit worried for a minute. lol
@Diana - rule of thumb is to wait 2 hrs. between meds and alternatives. They don't interact. I know from a few years of experience.
James will try it for us lol
That is my grandma's favourite leaves. They are tasty and very unique.
You're a wonderful, breath of fresh air... Thank you for being you.
Great vid, James! Your my inspiration for growing my food forest!
Thank you my friend! Me and Tuck appreciate your kind and encouraging words 😄
I grew the Bullseye version of that herb last summer. Similar sensation. Really cool. They'll get big, too!!
Wow you have give me the inspiration to garden and I’m loving it
LOL...when you paused and saw the monarch butterfly I thought you were hallucinating!! Lol!!! :)
Try reading the transcript-I was like WTH is he talking about, then I played the clip. 😅
Listening to you, makes my day... you are on a short list of real person s that make me feel very good ...
I’m so nervous watching this!! 😰 I’m so glad you’re ok! 😄
"What you focus on increases"- Andy Andrews. That quote stuck out like a sore thumb.
New sub.👍🏽
Lol, you nut! I am so glad you're not "Normal". Stay Awesome James! Peace, Love and Light my friend!!!
I agree with Kelly, except, I wish that more people were "normal", like you are, James.
I ate that before, recommended by my father to try. He had it too when he was young, thank you for sharing as now I know what is the name of this plant!! 😝
I grew it in my garden one year. I had people trying it as part of a " touch and taste " garden. I created a tincture in vodka and it numbs too.
Try dehydrating your electric daisy flowers so you've got them when the plant isn't in flower.
What a goof! Watching James try to talk after trying this plant. Thanks man! I've been wondering what herb would help with this. Thanks for all the awesome vids.. ✌
I grew the bullseye variety this year it is so cool! They keep the numbing properties when dried so you can keep some for winter sore throats.
We make tincture using the bullseye and anise really gd for sore throats
You can buy them on rareseeds.com
Can you share that recipe or a link? There is so little information online. staceyodell0654@yahoo.com
James!!! I can't believe you just ate that! Thanks for your dedication and courage.
Love how you pronounce some names. Like Borage. In Wisconsin we pronounce it bore age. Lol. So interesting to me different 'speak'. Like erb and herb!! Ha ha. Great video
And wow dude by the way congrats on 174k subscribers! I remember back in the day not too long ago you were about 60k. Bravo!
There were times in my life I could have used the relief this plant might offer. If you've ever chewed your tongue to bits, you know relief is hard to get. I'm going to have to look into this plant. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Tuck's little wet whiskers in the water. 😂😊😘🐕Too cute!!
I tried this recently as a tea and tincture, it has a lemony zest with tingly numbing sensation. The person who showed me sprayed the tincture on my face and instantly the blood rushed to my face and felt intensely overwhelmed with warm buzzing. So cool!!!
Gotta love videos of people doing experiments on themselves. That was really funny. I'm going to have to look for some seeds for this plant.
my tomatoes plants are really doing great this year July 2019. in Michigan, first time I seen them grow this fast! hot and Humid!
I love to hear that Ali! Bring on the harvests 😄
What state this is? The weather seem very nice. Tuck is doing his own research on what he will pull out of the ground lol love you both.
There is subtle wisdom in this video. Namaste.
This would be great for patients with a salivary gland stones. Happens w patients that aren’t eating much.
I forgot all about that plant. My uncle gave me a cutting in '03 and it developed into a beautiful little bush. I used to chew and swallow the blooms and never had a bad reaction. I'm going to order some seeds and grow it again next year.

Oh my gosh, I laughed so hard at your reaction! At least we know it works.😂 Great video as usual! Tuck was so cute drinking that water.😍
Haha it definitely does! He’s the best ❤️ thanks for watching and commenting
Appreciate all your top tips and tuck is incredible.
Love from my herb garden in Yorkshire, England!

I grew this plant for the first time. Excited to make my numbing pain salve
Just planted my seeds! Gonna make some cool stuff with my electric daisies! Tintures, lip balm, soaps etc!
I’m on Etsy buying the toothache plant seeds now!! Lol
James, I love your enthusiasm and how kindly you take care of Tuck. I watched you unboxing of all the seed varieties you got from Baker Creek last year. I've wondered how many of the varieties you decided to try this year? 1500 varieties - seems like it would be hard to keep them all straight!

Hahah! Nothing like experimenting with a little medical plant haha
Lol, yup it was a lot of fun
James be very careful plants r no joke I'm all for it just be careful I wouldn't recommend eating direct like that because u never know your reaction! Keep up the good work
Good point, thanks for looking out Wendy.
This particular plant is harmless.. It is used widely as vegetables/salad in South East Asia
I remember my first time ;)
Eating two...impossible to talk...
Mouth stops working.
it's never impossible to talk, maybe you mean hard to understand
Ooo yeah! There is plenty madicines in nature especialy in the woods.
Thank you for the encouragement to plant interesting plants and to focus on positive things. God bless you. :))
Oh my goodness. I was a wreck waiting and watching you eat that Electric Daisy. Thank goodness you know what you're doing. 💕🌻💕🌻
You are only the 2nd person that I have seen grow the Toothache Plant. The other was Papa Pepper. I had never heard of it before him. He didn’t demonstrate it on camera like you did. He grows a lot of different things. He just showed a Dwarf Tamarillo from South America. He got the seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. Thought you might be interesqted in it. I have a bunch of Milkweed growing behind my garage. Tons of Monarchs
I love to hear that TheresaLili! Thanks for helping out the butterflies 😄
watched this video and a few others on my plant, they had one flower on it and we had my fiances son try it, He said it was better than orajel. I have few more coming so I bought some vodka to make a tincture...so excited
Thats awesome..I tried my Toothache plant today for the first time also..same effect ,,awesome medicinal herbs...
Yay, I just bought 2 toothache plants at a farmers market. I eat the leaves. They tingle and taste good.
Dang dude I got worried. That looked like an allergic reaction. Easy killer!
I thought the same thing!
I got worried too.. .I've seen ppl use this but never like James...lol
Reed----That was my reply as well! I was worried and laughed--maybe nervous laughter?
I grew the toothache plant a few years ago and it didn't grow well for me . If I had a toothache, I would put the flower between my cheek and sore tooth gum. This Jersey heat is making everything grow great but I can only stay outside a little while. My organic food forest is coming along real good and it teaches me to eat better for a healthy planet.
Awesome James, way to step up your game! Hey Tuck!
Thanks Greg!! Me and Tuck appreciate your kind words 🐕😁
We take those for salad almost everday.. but greener leaves n reddish yellow flower... boil it with salt to take the the numbness a lil bit down.. btw we eat it raw with salt n bamboo shoot(fermented)
That plants gnarly
Ooohh!! Beautiful Monarque
Yes! It kicks in after about 20 seconds. I swallowed it too and it's gnarly.
I just ordered both types of seeds from Bakers Creek. Happy growing!!
I wish I had learned about a food forest years ago. My health won’t allow me to start something like that but I love hearing about yours 🙂. I absolutely love this idea
Man your channel has totally blown up! Congrats dude, love watching your stuff.
Thanks Justin I appreciate you watching and following along!
Very timely video, Papa Pepper gifted me some of the bullseye variety this week!
Jame's I wish you would do a each season video, fall spring summer winter ...here is what we should be doing to prepare, what to plant, now it's time to, etc etc... that would be so useful

I love vegetables so so much. All kind of vegetables
I really love your garden. Special harvest videos. Awsome
Love the Tuck shots!
These things are wild! I just tried one, the initial experience was like licking a weak 9v battery. The numbing was impressive

Cool herb James! And great on cam try. Can't wait to try growing it. In South Jersey we have the aquifers that have the best water. I miss the cold clean aquifer water.
Love You James!
The tooth ache plant is also used for deworming . Tape-worm,hookworm any intestinal worms.
Incredibly the groundhogs love to eat those flowers too! Mine are hooked on them.
It sounds like it would be great for a sore throat too!
Yup!! It really packs a lot of potency in the little flower head too 💪
Or a canker sore!
