Boox and Remarkable switch to metal and glass made them to precious to take around with me. I need something that handle the stress of being in a lose bag and carried around at work. Thanks for the review of latest news Voja! To respond on some questions you ask us: - Plastic vs Metal - weight, feel, grip, flexibility all make be appreciate it. I love metal too but not as functional. Your function over form remark….hits the mark. - Pen loop - Glad it’s flexible but those seem to “stretch out” quickly. The pins in the back seem more like screw receptors. I’m strongly thinking that the loop can be replaced by popping the cover, revealing two short screws that hold the loop. - I’m relieved there is a food structure. Makes it a bit weird but very functional, the curve actually makes it easier to pick up. But feet hold in place while writing. - Half folio clip design seems something out of the 70’s. Very cautious here. If it holds the folio well I’m ok with it. Because it’s a half folio, I don’t see myself taking it off like I do with the nomad to reduce thickness on the back while writing for extended times. - No software features or programs previewed (yet?). This is important. Lots of work needed on Atelier to make it useful “For Those Who Write” (personal comic books, doodles, sketches - all useful when I’m writing. Why do they not see this? Need PNG import/placement at the very latest.) - It would be great to reveal the “accessory” (front light, keyboard, other…) that uses the rear four pins. What a shout out to extended use, less waste, upgradability, longevity. Really great. Unmatched design. - Price: I predict is could be $599 but I think they will strive for the $549 mark. Honestly, whatever the premium is for the flexible screen vs the glass screen, I'll happily pay it. It's worth not worrying if the screen will shatter in my bag.
It's been a while I am following your channel, maybe a year or more. Meanwhile I am amazed at how this technology has diversified to adapt to different uses and needs. I will purchase one of these in the current months as I am sure now, by watching your guides, what I am looking for with this devices and what to expect. Thanks for your detached, relevant and constructive analyzes. I also appreciate this feedback after all the dramas concerning the management of their timeline.
Having the Supernote A6X2 Nomad and the Boox Go 10.3, my decision is to sell the Nomad, not worry about the A5X2, and hope for a Boox Go 7.8. I've refreshed my Boox Nova Air2 and it's working well as a stand-in for a smaller version of the Go 10.3. I fully understand the impressive targeted capabilities of the Ratta tablets, but the price (operational and financial) is a closed OS and a very unimpressive UI. I don't have loads of Android apps on my Boox tablets, but that is my choice entirely (flexibility). The apps I have are used regularly, and I've managed to make both of my Boox home screens quite non-distracting. If Boox upped their game to an optional Viwood style UI -- starting with the "Go" series -- they'd be even more compelling in the marketplace.
I'm really looking forward to ordering this A5X2. I currently own the A6X2 and love it, but I often need a bigger screen when I'm drawing a diagram or reading a PDF book with small print. I don't intend to sell my A6X2 because it's super handy when I travel.
Enjoying the new setup, lighting, sound AND cute glasses! 🤓 Of course, also, thank you for sharing this valuable information and your impressions 😊 I agree that the statement about the more expensive screen is helping the consumer make the higher end price “land”. So my guess is above $500.
YES. Fantastic point (12m15s) about the trade-off between the aesthetics of metal & glass vs. the light carefree (and non-tech distraction-free!) quality of a lighter, plastic approach. I think Remarkable have missed a trick here - I miss the happy-go-lucky RM1 - and I will definitely be checking out this new A5 X2..
Many thanks for your thoughts on the device. I started with a RM2 and switched to the A6X2. I love the software, especially the headlines, hyperlinks, etc. I tested the RMPP for a few days and I unfortunately dislike the writing feel quite a bit. Due to literally writing on (structured) glas, it feels very hard and slippery - almost as bad as on an iPad - which should not be the case when going for an eInk device. The A5X2 is very high on my wishlist but the price, especially considering taxes and shipping costs in EU, might kill it for me. The Boox Go 10.3 might be an alternative but somehow the software is not convincing - it just feels so distracting and cluttered. Anyway, I am looking forward to your A5X2 review. I am enjoying your content a lot! Best regards!
I will definitely watch the review when it comes out, even though I have no intention of buying this device - mostly because I already own the A5X, and it's a good, durable device that still works perfectly well for me. The new features look nice, but not innovative enough to justify the change.

My hope is that the cost of that fancy screen will be somewhat offset by the fact that they haven't had to develop a new motherboard. In principle, using the same internals as something else that's already in your product line should be a something that reduces development costs. But then again, the A6X2 costs about as much as the Boox Go 10.3 despite arguably using hardware that ought to be cheaper (less advanced SOC, older screen technology).
if same motherboard means exactly same internals, I hope they specced the A6X2 motherboard to be able to drive the 2x size of the A5X2 screen - twice as many pixels to deal with
I love the design. I use surface devices and the semi folio design just works perfectly well. Truly makes the devices feel very nimble. For everything else, it's not worth the upgrade from the A5X, but that was exactly the point and what Ratta wanted. So this device is an absolute win. People won't feel betrayed like when Boox iterates every few months giving everyone FOMO
Good thoughts on this. I'm really interested to see if they use the mechanical design for the folio to allow for a keyboard of some sort or a full folio for those who want it. I would also have loved to see them go semetrical for everything so you could move the pen loop. I am definitely in the function over form camp. Thanks as always!
From what I remember seeing its going to have a Mobius Carta 1300 screen, not sure if the mobius part matters but thats what I've heard, great vid as always 👍
I can't wait for this a 5 device. Literally I need something asap. Aya. It should be about two months I talked to customer service with supernote CN today
Nice review and alternate setting! I have the A5X (never getting rid of it) and the Nomad. I just bought the RPP for work notetaking, despite all the hate on it...for me it does what I want it to do so it's a keeper! But, I've been waiting a long time to get either a slim or A4 new Supernote... already decided not to get this slim. I'm a lefty and I can't get around some of the likely challenges with the design, that attached pen loop, uneven margins. Most concernedly for my constant travel and putting in one bag or another is the half cover attachment. I can see me taking that cover off and damaging those very small, likely plastic or thin metal pins (?), attachment things, so ruining the cover option. Hoping the A4 on will be a different design.
will it support saving annotations on pdfs themselves through different layers, instead of simple screenshots? I'm looking to buy it to make the most of my pdfs, to scribble and save annotations on fluently, with the least lag possible... thanks!
Yes, nervous about the price and if I'll have to save longer but I'm as pleased-as-punch that they've stuck with the plastic screen... I have two boox devices and i almost never _'go iceskating'_ [writing on a glass screen]_ on either but do 99% of my writing on my AX5. My Lumi sits in a Boox stand and is exclusively used to host bible software and as for my Note Air 2 Plus... I'm thinking of selling it or give it to a friend. It's a relief to know that when I get my hands on one it'll have close to the same writing feel as with my A5X, and not my slippery Boox devices. To me, the plastic hinge-clips of the folio look like a weak point, in my world they'll last maybe a few weeks... I hope I'm wrong about that.
do you have a video discussing A5 vs A6 size e-ink notebooks? I’m using A5 paper at the moment and looking for an e-ink solution. A6 feels small looking at printouts - device is about the same convenient size but usable space is - well - A6 :) - so naturally A5 is more in line with what I’m used to right? But now the device is quite a bit bigger with bezels etc. It would be mainly for work and desk use
Good question. I am confused about this. Because I see Reddit posts from Supernote reps saying Carta 1300 will be used. So do they come in flexible and glass screens?
I'm fairly certain that it is Carta 1300, as the AI Paper uses the (probably) same panel that is a Carta Flexible 1300, 10.65", 300PPI. The 0.05" difference probably can be attributed to the device frame obscuring more on the AI Paper than on the Supernote A5X2, or that Ratta is listing the technical size of the device and not the actual viewable diagonal.
Maybe I'm overlooking something, but I don't see the issue with having the folio connect mechanically, even with no magnets or "guidance". Their demo makes it look like it's very easy to lay the device down, pull the release switch, and the folio slides off; I'm imagining it would be the exact same process to put it back on - lay it down on a table and slide the folio "hooks" into place. For me as a current A5X owner, the bigger question is whether the updates they've made would be worth an upgrade. Thoughts?
The potential fiddliness is not disconnecting the folio from the device, it's the part that wasn't shown. Connecting it to the device. That can be potentially fiddly.
I still use a plastic carta boox max lumi that everyone still get amased about. "Less" is a binary word used here for a very subtle difference. But "broken" is very much binary when talking about my late glass screen boox nova. Plastic screens are very nice to have, in all good faith, and worth every penny in my case.
Yeah, the price is probably going to be really high, especially in Europe :( The A6X2 is already as expensive as the reMarkable 2, so the new A5X2 is almost certainly going to be in RMPP territory… It’s really a pity because I love what they did with the software and hardware, but there are a few cons (only 3 virtual pens, no infinite canvas, no light) that are too big for me to justify the price :(
I like the changes but to be honest... I care more that they'd spend now more time on improving the software. There hasn't been a significant new thing since Atelier - which is not "for those who write" - whereas there are many feature requests that have been open for a while.
pricing under $500 usd has to be it for me to swing for it rather than Boox. I want to root for the sustainable company but for many like me I this economy, we are deciding by value proposition. Keyboard typing seamless, and a better drawing software natively will determine my choice. I hope ratta has improved the merging layers, and onion skinning/ layer opacity merging options for artists I also wanted it so I could practice writing kanji so pls, Ratta developers
I find a number of design aspects concerning or not to my liking. I’ve never been a fan of the pen loop. And now the loop is a screwed on piece of hardware. The flex screen combined with FeelWrite2 is very concerning. Like you, I prefer FW1 and I am guessing that the flex screen combined+ FW2 is going to have a rubbery feel. What is the point of a 1/2 folio? The back of the device is going to get scratched and the scratches will fill with dirt and look awful over time. And, like you, I worry about how the folded folio feels when it’s folded back and under the device - for lefty & righty. Why couldn’t the just make an A5 version of the Nomad? Equal margins and all.
From my understanding, the pen loop is removable by taking the back off and unscrewing or unhooking the connector. And the device will sit on feet that protrude from its back preventing direct contact and sliding on a table. As for if dirt gets on the folio while completely open, the screen self heals if it scratches, and if you ever need a new screen, you would be able to buy one and throw the rest of the internals in your current device into the new one, making it cheaper.
I never liked the loop for the pen and that it is a part of the device makes it even worth - I hope they will overthink this solution. It is a very ugly design and it does not match the elegant slim design of the device. Your assessment of the attachment of the folio is spot on, as is my opinion.
It's so disappointing to see Ratta waste so much time and money on the design of the A5X2. I can't imagine the community would be any less happy if it was identical to the Nomad (personally I'd prefer if it was) but bigger. And they would have spend a hell of a lot less on r&d. The device could be a little cheaper, and may have even released on time.
The only mistake they made was suggesting a new device long ago. They should have simply not announced it until it was ready. Then no one would care that they were taking their time designing it.
I knew that you will like Quaderno A4 a bit or some aspects of it after all. It does not have a good software maybe or build quality which is shocking for a Japanese company but guess what man: the battery of remarkable pro is falling like crazy too more than my iPad so this is not the weak line of Quaderno. This device should be used with WiFi off. Anyway from the moment you experience colour with gallery 3 you cannot go back so I want something like Quaderno with plastic screen and US letter or iPad 13 size. A4 strictly is not essential since the aspect ratio is less wide than 4:3. The plastic screen and using Wacom is essential for me as the glass screen destroys both the writing feel and appearance of eink text on the device. My remarkable 1 is much better than my pro in both these aspects. I hope and beg you actually to push them in the plastic screen direction because if not you that understands these things then who? So this means a5x2 no colour gallery 3 screen which means that no gallery 3 for a4x2 which is very sad news for me. I want Wacom and a big plastic screen. The front light does not worth the sacrifice of the additional weight, (smaller sizes 11.8) and not natural feel write.
My thoughts are supernote has managed to take themselves off the table of consideration. I am selling my nomad. They play too many games. 😢 who needs this when there are so many other devices that are always available. I don’t believe supernote is that much better than many other devices on and available in the market.
I agree to have modularity and replaceable battery. However, the whole "sustainability" topic is realistically viewed a lot of marketing and unfortunately lots of the reviewers (which get often provided with a free device) do parroting on how "sustainable" these devices are, even if there are no other sourcing options, e.g. for batteries. If Ratta doesn't exist tomorrow anymore or would not offer any replacement parts or way overpriced, you have a brick regardless of a modular design and the replaceability of the battery on paper and it is all then only marketing and to comply with EU regulations. I wished here a bit more options but I doubt companies have an interest here, unless someone like the EU would force them to have at least a second source for batteries.
"...the help of MAGNETIC FORCES!" 😂 Phew, they should really write in huge bold red "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME," that durability video was painful, reminded my what JerryRig did with that poor Boox NA3C. I'm not a fan of that pen loop, but I do prefer the screen to differ in color from the frame. I guess when reading it'd be nice, but in writing and drawing, it's nice to see the screen borders defined.
Looking forward to your review when you receive the device.

Yes they did and an official explained on Reddit that they wanted to reshoot it because they weren’t pleased with its overall aesthetics.
Perhaps "2 x cost" is an error. It seems unusual to stay something like that in the picture.

I don’t, but if I did own Supernote, I’d want to collaborate with you.
Thank you :)
So is this a carta 1300 panel ?
I'm pretty sure that it is, but it is Carta Flexible, not HD Carta.
Voya, your attitude towards remarkable and supernote had changed after you went to remarkable headquarters. What happened in that building? Lol
If i understand you then i agree. Plastic, colour, supernote, a4. And some work done on the reader.
My thoughts are supernote has managed to take themselves off the table of consideration.
I am selling my nomad. They play too many games. 😢 who needs this when there are so many other devices that are always available. I don’t believe supernote is that much better than many other devices on and available in the market.
A4X2 please haha
Stop buying devices that are not modular, upgradable and with a replaceable battery. Vote with your money, people.
Stop telling people how to spend their money. If people care about those things enough then they will support on it on their own terms.
👏👏👏
Meh there are advantages to non-user replaceable batteries
- Slimmer design
- Cheaper to manufacture
- Better waterproofing
Etc
@@Xsynth100% agree with you!
Ratta run out of ideas 3 years ago after A5/6X launch...
everything they're doing is just struggling than innovating
I disagree, they are focusing on Quality, rather than features, boox has very Bad reviews on their panels
Modular design is not inovation but I dont see anyone else going in that direction. For me it is huge plus.
"...the help of MAGNETIC FORCES!" 😂
Phew, they should really write in huge bold red "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME," that durability video was painful, reminded my what JerryRig did with that poor Boox NA3C.
I'm not a fan of that pen loop, but I do prefer the screen to differ in color from the frame. I guess when reading it'd be nice, but in writing and drawing, it's nice to see the screen borders defined.
