Hi. I just found out about this SketchUp Essentials program from using my calculator on my iPad. There was a little advertisement in the area of my calculator. Go figure. So I downloaded it and went to UA-cam to fine some videos on how to use the basic program. So I click on your video for the very first time and you were very informative for a beginner like me. You gave me a starting point and I really appreciate you for introductory video. I wish you continued success with all of your future videos and I also wish you continued success financially as well. Thank for this introduction. I hope to learn more because I want to use this program to figure out how I am going to plan the finishing of my basement. I want to build some storage space and put a bathroom in my basement & make it my man cave for relaxation. I hope my project is even better than the first time I club my basement in my first home. This program has me excited to learn it. Thank you again and you have a wonderful day.
Take this from someone that never leaves comments. I am very new to Sketchup and Layout. You answered so many of my questions and helped me with a great starting point. Clear and silliness free instruction. Awesome!
Thanks for all your videos! I'm jumping back into an Interior design course after a year with students who've never left and long story short, these videos are a lifesaver. I don't bother searching anywhere else for tutorials. ;)
I believe this is my first comment EVER on a UA-cam video: Wanted to say a huge thank-you for doing these videos (the Layout tutorial in particular). I've been wary of the learning curve involved, and this just blew my mind as to how much easier I could have been making the process. I've been trying to do scaling and title blocks, etc. within Sketchup itself for years. What a time-saver and instant "pro" boost to my business and branding. THANK YOU!!!
You do a great job with these videos, Justin! Sketchup Layout is not that intuitive. At least for us 40+ year olds. Thanks for simplifying. My drawings look very professional.
Great intro to Sketchup and Layout interface and connections! I'm trying to get some drawings put together quickly for a building permit and this tutorial was invaluable at helping me get this done today! Thx Justin.
Thanks, Justin. I like the new direction into some Layout videos. Just in time for my recent purchase of Sketchup Pro. This was a very good introduction to Layout and has already helped sharpen some of my fumblings about in the new program. No one makes it come together better. Keep it coming.
Thanks Chris! I'll be coming out with more Layout videos in the future - honestly, I'm having to learn it as well as I go, so glad you're finding something useful out of this!
Hey! Justin, thanks for your explanation of what Layout is about. I've been using SketchUp Pro since 2018, it's now 2023 and I still don't know Layout.
I admire your skill and knowledge. I find that I have to slow down the playback speed to prevent your hyper active cursor movement from effecting me. It would be helpful to me if the cursor didn't dart around so much. But that won't stop me from learning from your videos.
Lol - unfortunately I'm not sure I can do too much about that - at least in my more recent videos I've added a highlight to the cursor to make it easier to follow - glad you're still finding the vids helpful though!
I use the pro version for a few years and I think that Lay out by its simplicity and its power could make sketchup a recognized software in the professional world which is not the case at the moment at any time In France (not expensive enough I was told ..) Thanks again and please go on and on ...
Hey man! I be watched lots of videos from your channel and I just wanted to get another video from you that I though would be good to show to others. More on layout, specifically the workflow for all the views and how to get it all to a product and into a DWG file. Thanks! You are the only one I watch, very explanatory.👍
Great video I have Sketch Up Pro 2016. I think it would be helpful as you go forward with this video series on layout to let us know which version you are using & if some of the things you are showing us are only avibule in the version that you are using.
Hi Vince - I can try to note that I'm using Pro 2017 - unfortunately I won't be very good at telling you about the old versions because I've never used a version of Layout older than 2017. Sorry about that...
Just discovered Sketch up! Incredible! I have so much to learn! I like the way you present the learning. My videos?! Ah thanks... bit of a novice at them... I make them for my school children. Cheers though...
again a fantastic and helpful explanation Justin! Always a good source to plug into if you run out of steam! hope you're doing great and keep doing this! Love how you help improving skills across.
Hey Justin, a great series. Just started with Layout and I am finding a whole lot of great little nuggets of info in this series. Great work and thanks.
fantastic , thanks Justin from Spain I think is the better place to learn sketch up in you tube in English , in Spanish the Manes ( from Argentina) is very good too
I am enjoying your video. I've been using SketchUp for very simple things, like boxes, and I'm trying to figure out how to put them into layout. Can you or anybody else put me to some simpler videos on how to use layout? Is there a layout for dummies?
Hi Love your videos. Thanks for all your help. I am trying to copy from one layout file to another file. But all my texts shifts from the original file, Can you say how to avoid shifting the texts?
Another useful video. However, I still haven't seen what I am looking for. How do you remove the section cuts? Mine keep coming over despite turning them off in Sketchup How do you get rid of the grey background? I don't want a grey box on white paper.
For subsequent pages following the first one do you need to reinsert the model of each different scene? When I create a new page and change the scene it changes them on all the other pages too.
Also, instead of using "Straight lines" style, try to use "Hidden Line" with some depth cue and profile enabled, to get those lines from round objects. You'll also prefer to mount all your scenes on SketchUp with the right style, thus preventing errors like section cuts appearing when changin style in Layout.
You could draw a line in with layout's line tools, then use a clipping mask to hide the rest of the step lines. This video may help - ua-cam.com/video/VMJ5iXx_MaE/v-deo.html - Is think kind of what you're looking for?
Maybe this could do it... Haven´t tested yet, but I keep thinking it would not work correctly if I had a tiled floor, for example... Worth the try though PS: Keep up the good work, I watch all of your videos, big fan! Also, do more like these (focusing on Layout) Cheers
Hello! I have hade sketchup before and im getting the hang n it again... but when im moving it to layout i cant find any like sheet to start from... only bland or squared pages... any one know where to find this... I have payed for sketchup pro...
I have a little fun problem to solve, I need to make the approximately equal ( ≈ ) symbol in every Layout document I make, don't even ask WHY, but if I save with it in a textwindow, it f-s up and become's some programming issue, so I have to first save EVERY document without it, then put in the symbol and make PDF:s, then quit without saving. Every Single Time.
Hi! I'm am arch student working in studio for the first time! I'm having an issue. I created a model in sketch up and I'm trying to create a floorplan view but of course when you go to the top view it doesn't show windows
When I do a plan, I always import the Google plan so I can see the plan on the site. But since the last update the Google map/photo is so low resolution.
How do you get rid of the gray background around the inserted plan. That is pretty important because that is not how you want an architects drawing to look. How do you select the sheet size. Was it 24x36".
I'm converting solid edge file to .stl file, while importing .Stl file in sketch up, plain surfaces breaks into no.of elements.....How can I import the model as it is....? Are anyone know Pls suggest?
I've got one for door schedules here - ua-cam.com/video/vYuMBACuFcY/v-deo.html - Don't think I've done a finish schedule, but I'm thinking that would likely just be an imported excel table in Layout...
Hey Justin, Can you tell me how I can update the complete sketch up drawing to a newer revision of the same drawing in layout PRO 2017? Basically, I have 18 pages in layout of different scenes from my model, but there are some changes to some of the scenes (no new scenes, just revisions of the previous ones). I don't want to have to create a whole new Layout document for these minor changes. Is there a simple fix? Many thanks, Alan.
Justin,I have a question for you and it's a big issue ! Layout tend to sometimes have missing embedded images with a grey background and a red x. What is causing that? Thank you.
I would like to know.... how do you think layout compares to AutoCAD? It seems a bit more work to use layout... like five times the amount of commands needed to get certain things done... (line weights?). I would like to know what you guys think. Thanks in advance :)
Some things are harder in Layout than AutoCAD, but the big plus for Layout is that you're actually working from a 3D model, meaning changes in your model will update in Layout as well, while AutoCAD seems to be more of a 2D focused type tool...
I'm not sure how to help in this situation - it's no different than switching between excel and word or any other two programs on your computer that are open at the same time...
This guy might be one of the hardest working youtubers out there.

Thank you, that was a straightforward and simple tutorial. I love your videos!

This is great, but was hoping you would go over how to add dimensions from sketchup into this layout plan model. Thanks
Very helpful! Do you have a video that will show me how to remove the background fill color inside of each viewport?
Awesome video. I wish I found this video before I spent 3 hours fumbling my way through figuring it out on my own.
Really glad it helped!
Great beginner intro, TY!
Any help with Layout is greatly appreciated....I've had some difficulty getting my arms around this application.
Hi Jim! - I should be coming out with some more layout stuff soon. Thanks!

Hi thanks for made this course.
How I can resize scrapbook with scale also the font?
I'm having an issue with the Label tool in Layout. Sometimes it puts a box around the label and sometimes it doesn't. Any quick fixes? Thanks.
Thnq for ur video..but post a video about wardrobe dimensions with sketchupayout
Nice job and good introduction to layout
Thanks Mike - Glad you liked it!
This was ace thank you! Perfect level of pithiness!
Lol - I try to keep it as pithy as I can :)
Muchísimas gracias majete!!! Thank you soo much
For subsequent pages following the first one do you need to reinsert the model of each different scene? When I create a new page and change the scene it changes them on all the other pages too.
What would be a good solution for representing stairs in layout? Can I put something like a "break" line?
Also, instead of using "Straight lines" style, try to use "Hidden Line" with some depth cue and profile enabled, to get those lines from round objects. Please tell me what software you have. I would like to purchase the one you have. Mine is not the same as yours.
Do you know how to get rid of the grey area background after completing the the drawing?
sir really you are awesome.

this was super helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for a quick tutorial, god bless 🙏 😇😇
Another great video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm trying to figure out a smart way to save it as a jpeg or something, vector would be best, I'm losing my f-ing MIND!!!!!!!
Was waiting for this video! 👌👌👌👌👌
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Hi! I'm am arch student working in studio for the first time! I'm having an issue. I created a model in sketch up and I'm trying to create a floorplan view but of course when you go to the top view it doesn't show windows
Sounds like you didn't add a section cut
Thx for the effort! really nice series!
Glad it helped!

Awesome - really glad it helped!

You change the style that you're using to have a white background in SketchUp using the styles section of your tray
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.. (BLACK METAL YEAH SCREAM)!!!
thank youuuuuuuuuuu..
Lol - glad you liked it!
Another great vid 👍 I'll definitely get round to your patreon page at some point.
Hi there I don’t understand why it has to be so complicated, why can’t I go to one of these pages and just start drawing.
Thanks, looks great, can you let me know how to remove the grey shading for printing pdf
Pick a style in SketchUp with a white background
I'm converting solid edge file to .stl file, while importing .Stl file in sketch up, plain surfaces breaks into no.of elements.....How can I import the model as it is....? Are anyone know Pls suggest?
Thanks a lot for this video. Did you have any template about this project?
Sorry - I don't have any downloadable templates...
Mind Blown
:)
Thanks for this, it truly helps! Cheers!
Thanks Oscar!
Great Insight, thanks!
Great vid, i look forward to more!
Have you got one for marking up measurements and creating finishes, door and window schedules?
I've got one for door schedules here - ua-cam.com/video/vYuMBACuFcY/v-deo.html - Don't think I've done a finish schedule, but I'm thinking that would likely just be an imported excel table in Layout...

Can you just go up to "File," "Document Setup," and re-link your old file reference to your new file?
Thanks Justin, I will try that....
It's awesome! thank you...
Justin,I have a question for you and it's a big issue ! Layout tend to sometimes have missing embedded images with a grey background and a red x. What is causing that? Thank you.
I think it's a link error - if you re-link the files under "File," "Document Setup," "References" they ought to work fine. Thanks!
great as usual
Thanks - glad you liked it!

how to put another scene in the same page, ex. Ground floor plan & 1st floor plan together in one sheet?
Just create another viewport - or copy paste the one you have and select a different view
how to get arc length diumension in sketchup layout
My model isn’t inserting... nothing is loading. Any suggestions what this might need to correct?!

@@Thesketchupessentials nope, nothing!! I’ve done it before - so it has worked.
How about starting from no file..new floor plan.
superb video
😎
How do you "go back to sketchup"when in layout. Not clear in video.
I'm not sure how to help in this situation - it's no different than switching between excel and word or any other two programs on your computer that are open at the same time...
Is there any difference between the pro version vs for students?
Sorry - don't know anything about the student version - is it desktop or online?
@@Thesketchupessentials I think it's a desktop. It looks like it has all the same things the pro version has, but it's only $55 a year.
Very helpful☝🏻
Thank you so muchhhhhhh!!
thank you so much !!
