  • A solidly built member of IBM's Personal System/2 line of computers, with a clock-tripled 486SLC3 processor upgrade which turns it into a very capable DOS and Windows 3.1x machine. I also plan to try installing IBM's OS/2 Warp 3.0 on it.

    the IBM 486SLC3 is such a great upgrade for 386SX. I just got a PS1 2123 and i've been on the look for the IBM 486SCL3 upgrade board but these are super rare

    I love the PS/2 line of computers from IBM. They look like a classic computing workhorse ready for work. Kids these days and their super-cool cases...

    I have such a soft spot for the PS/2 because I learned touch typing on one (Model 25) in tenth grade back in the day.

    also, this machine is capable of running windows 95. i have a non upgraded verison of this same model and windows 95 runs really well. Also, there is a video on my channel demonstrating the windows 95 installation process on this computer.

    I think we had something like this in our computer lab in high school, but my school was too cheap to buy any version of Windows...we had to use DOS even after Windows 95 came out.

    Another crippled PS/2 (due to the 16bit bus) from IBM. The wider slot is for video cards like the XGA-2, it passes its video output via those pins so you can use the built in VGA port. The 3Com card is actually 32-bit MCA. The SCSI port is typical IBM NIH, they could have used the micro-50 pin port there if they really wanted to.

    Love that rainbow colored ribbon cable. Did they honestly expect people to identify individual traces by their color with that many of them? :P

    Also, that DB15 port on the ethernet card is an AUI Ethernet port. You can use transceivers with it for RJ45 or coax ethernet, among others.

    Speaking of old, small hard drives, I found a 261MB Seagate in the loft the other day, seems an amazingly small amount of space today! Awesome PS/2 too, shame about the RAM limit!

    Yes. I have 486 with 4 megs of memory, and 250 megs hard drive, and I run Win 95 IE. Obviously system doesn't work fast but it works.

    Did you find out who made the hard drive? My guess is that it's an IBM, as they had a plant in Greenock, I think, in Scotland. I can't think of any other company who might've made a hard drive in the UK.

    With a few ISA's this baby can be turned into the "ULTIMATE" DOS 6.22 Gaming Machine,possibly also a decent PC early Win95 Games. I'm trying my self to get one,i also want a Hot Rodded 5150 with a Pentium MMX Mobo for daily use.

    @CenaTv2 Yes, but MCA sound cards are incredibly rare and expensive. I could install a SCSI CD-ROM drive, but I'd need to relocate the hard drive to somewhere else in the case.

    I have an IBM PS/2 Model 80 with a 486 upgrade I need to rescue one of these days. Unfortunately, the original monitor/keyboard/mouse are long gone, it's just the computer itself now (because it was too large for anyone to bother throwing out).

    These supposedly have an XGA-2 chipset and there is supposedly a driver for it (perhaps OS/2 only?).

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  2 роки тому

      No, it has "Enhanced VGA" onboard, which can do 256 colors at 640x480, but only OS/2 has a driver for it. The XGA-2 is an MCA card which does have Windows drivers.

      @@vwestlife I thought that seemed like an odd choice for this low-end of a machine at the time. I read that somewhere, though. Thanks for the info!

    I’m really curious how these SLC3 upgrade processors compare to let’s say a 486DX2-66

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  3 роки тому

      Not even close. The 486SLC is based on the 386SX, so it's limited to a 16-bit data bus.

  • @TailsFurse

    Hey there vwestlife! long time viewer. Just got myself one of these machines from an estate sale. It's got a particular problem where after being powered on for 20 seconds, it shuts down, then power cycles, on and off, 3 seconds off and half a second on. Have you ever heard of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all the content over the years!

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  7 років тому

      Sounds like a power supply problem. Either that or one of the devices in it is drawing too much current and causing the power supply to shut down to protect itself. Try unplugging the drives and expansion cards and see if that helps.

    • @TailsFurse
      @TailsFurse 7 років тому

      Thanks for your reply. I took the machine apart and unplugged everything, except the motherboard. It still showed the problem. I unhooked the power supply and separated it from the machine, and shorted the "ON" wires and the power supply still showed the "Cycling" problem. Seems I have a bad PSU. Dang. Inside the PSU nothing seems physically stressed, so it looks like I'll be on the lookout for a new one.
      Thanks again for your reply and your help!
