The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general is a real historical figure named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. In the beginning of the MV you hear a Peking opera singer performing “The Song of Gaixia” (A traditional Chinese Opera song) which is a song that Xiang Yu composed for his wife, Lady Yu, who eventually took her own life. (Fun fact: In Lay's song "Jade" which is a song also on this album, the story is supposed to be about Lady Yu and Xiang Yu's love story.) Lay is an ambassador for China, so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles. As he says in "Lit," "I am the King ... bringing China to the world." And that's pretty much a fact: He has king-maker status in the music and entertainment industry and he has a lot of international influence which allows him to bring Chinese culture to the world. Everything about this song and MV is a poetic, cinematic masterpiece. For example, the word Lotus in Chinese sounds a little like Lit in English. (Another play on words, just like the Chinese pronunciation of Jade sounds like Yu or you in English, which Lay cleverly used in his song "Jade." Get it? Jade = Yu and Jade = you.) Lay used lotus (Lit) as a metaphor for no matter how hard people try to bring him down, he will stand strong and survive through anything the world throws at him, like a lotus flower. The Lotus often represents purity. The Lotus is special because it grows in the mud, but out of the most dirty and unforgiving conditions, blooms one of the most beautiful flowers. The Lotus is a famous symbol in Chinese culture and it often represents how something good and pure can grow and triumph despite what you would think are harsh conditions. Lay has said that the idea for "Lit" comes from the fact that his haters have been calling him "White Lotus," which refers to someone who acts innocent, and uses it for his gain and plays the victim all the time. So when he wrote the song he took that negativity and embraced it and turned it into something positive. So, in other words, he is saying: "You thought you could bring me down, but you are wrong. I am not a fake white lotus, but I am a true lotus who is LIT. I am more powerful than you know and I will rise above all your negativity and show you how I grow even stronger and more beautiful no matter how much mud and dirt I have to go through," etc. The dragon is a very powerful symbol in Chinese culture and it is even said that if you are Chinese you are a descendant of the dragon. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize vitality, strength and good luck. In one interview I read, Lay also talked about how he has two dragons inside him -- a good dragon and a bad dragon. He said he always chooses to listen to the good dragon. The good dragon is the one who is protecting him and helping him through all his hardships and difficult times. So the main theme of "Lit" is about fighting his inner self and learning to ignore and overcome the people who are trying to knock him down. As you have discovered, Lay is is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. And "Lit" is a prime example of that. If you study the credits at the end of this video, you see that this MV was produced by Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay (Zhang Yixing is Lay's real name, Lay is a stage name given to him by SM Entertainment) -- he owns the studio. So, the credits show, Lay has his hand in almost every aspect of this production. It's his name you will see dozens of times in the credits. He is the one that wrote and composed the song, he even produced the beat himself. He is also executive producer (So this production was all financed by him), he came up with the storyline, he helped choreograph and he helped direct the MV, etc. But that's normal for Lay's solo work. With Lay, when you ask who did it? -- for any part of the song, MV or choreography -- you are pretty much guaranteed that the answer is: Lay. He does it all. He is such a perfectionist that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. He prides himself in the fact that all aspects of his music are created by him. This MV took more than 6 months to make and more than $1.4 million to produce. And it was all done by Lay. They actually filmed at one of the largest and most well known film studios in China and had more than 50 extras. What you saw was the real temple. No Screenshots. The dragon was CGI, but the rest of the set is all real. You should really check out the making of film ua-cam.com/video/x_K39ntCEXw/v-deo.html and Lay's "dance practice"/choreography video for "Lit." ua-cam.com/video/9Yefy6iw0As/v-deo.html to really see how things were made. Lay is not really new to you, you saw him in some of EXO's MVs, such as "Monster." Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he is meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin from SHINee and SuperM being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China. His catch phrase is "Balance" which means that when it comes to choreography and synchronization it has to have balance. If it's not balanced then it's not good. So his attention to detail when he creates music and choreography is on point. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music. Within the Chinese music industry and dance community, Lay is regarded as an industry expert that pretty much all other dancers and musicians look up to -- he has even been credited with making Krump a mainstream dance style in China, and he is one of China's leading experts when it comes to Krump. (Lay's Krump teacher is Trix who is from Korea and is considered one of the best Krumpers in the industry.) Lay has even recently started his own Idol trainee company in China -- with SM's blessing -- where he plans to use his skill and knowledge to influence the world entertainment industry and to pass his experience on to the next generation, etc. Lay's dancers are always very international, they are usually from all over the world, all races and genders and they speak all different languages. Lay's goal is always to seek out the best of the best and to surround himself with experts in everything he does. He wants to learn as much as possible and to be as diverse as possible about all styles of dance and cultures. And he doesn't just casually learn a new style of dance, when Lay puts his mind to something he goes all in and immerses himself in it with a goal of becoming the best at it. That is why he is regarded as an expert at so many different things, because he becomes so involved and studies and practices so much that he eventually overtakes his teachers.

Fun facts, quick outline, others can add more or correct me: -Lay started his own company in China and makes his music. -He produced, wrote, directed, etc etc on every aspect of this mv. -Lit is the mandarin pronunciation of Lotus. -He has haters and they were continuing to say over the years that he was hiding his true persona and that he was a bad person, etc etc. He’s very friendly and always has a smile when in public. Long story... -This is his anthem/fighting song of sticking it to the haters. -Lotus grows in the mud and comes up to produce the beautiful flower. Metaphor for Lay. -He paid for this mv out of his own pocket. -Beginning part he sings Chinese opera (he had to learn how to). -Story at the beginning is one of his favourite folklore, about a general who goes back to save his wife but is killed. -He went to L.A. for 3? months to learn krumping from a “master”. -Filmed in the largest movie studio in China. If you watch any historical or costume Chinese movies or shows you will definitely see one of part of the palace. -I say that is the best looking dragon I have ever seen and I watch a lot of fantasy shows/movies. He didn’t spare any expenses on the cgi. That’s all I can think of. I’m sure others will provide more details or correct me. It’s just a lit mv!
Good outline! Except 2 facts: -The Chinese Opera was sung by a professional artist, not Lay; -Lay took his krumping teacher TRIX, the world champion, to China, and studied with TRIX for 3 month, more than 8 hours/day, before the MV was shot. After the MV was done, TRIX didn't leave China. Lay keeps learning from TRIX until now and becomes a professionial krumper, at the same time Lay and TRIX do their best to develop Krump in China through krump sessions, master classes, TV Shows, etc. Both of them are respectful.
Lay is one of the best dancers in Kpop really he is incredible in singing and rap dancing and as an actor I see recommended are feat with Jason derulo and NCT 127 he is incredible
He trained with a krump master for this 🔥 and he's one of the few in kpop ( although this is c-pop😅) who have done this particular style of dance. Not a lot can pull it off
Yes China's King! Lay as a soloist is not Kpop, he's C-pop/M-pop. He's one of EXO's Main dancer. Aside from the success as a group every member also excels as a soloist.
Facts: 1. HE IS THE MAIN DANCER of EXO (Currently inactive)💥 2. SOLOIST- CPOP (NOT KPOP)💥 3. THE MV + SONG CO-PRODUCER & CO-DIRECTOR- Its Himself💥😎 Movie creator that we call him for this master piece 💫 4. SONG WRITER + ARRANGER 💥 5. IN SHORT- He is the 💥ALL ROUNDER😎💥 HE IS LIT. 💫 ANOTHER similar Artist- JACKSON WANG from GOT7. you must and must react to his MVs. These 2 ARTISTS are 2 of the top All rounders in Cpop and Kpop. 😎💥💯
you guys should react to honey by Lay and Let's shut up and dance by Lay, Nct 127 and Jason derulo Lay produce all by himself his own stuff and he practiced krump 6 months just to execute such amazing perfomance in this comeback. He's also a member of EXO and part of the dance line
Thank you! I'm glad you guys loved it. Somehow, I knew you would. Lay worked so on it and it truly shows. He's taking his solo career in China by storm. I'm proud of him. Also if you want another M/V that's like a movie, I highly recommend ONEUS-Come Back Home. The visuals blew me away along with the non-stop impressive choregraphy and killer vocals and rap. I felt like I was watching an intense film throughout. Haha
Lay has been taking Krump lessons for sometime now just for this... And now he is so into the dance style that he is still training in it... He already is better that the best Chinese Krump dancers... The Best thing is... He still is training inspite of being a CEO of his own training company for making new idol groups....
about the krumping Lay actually got very interested in it as a dance he says he wants to learn new dances all the time, so he spend less than a year to learn krump, his teacher and mentor is Trix a world champion krump dancer, Lay also had a dance battle with Bouboo a French also world champion krump dancer and actually many dancers congratulate and praise Lay for his krumping
Lay lived and learned crumping in LA. He was also on a street dance show with Jackson from GOT7 in 2020 where do choreographed dance against 2 other groups. He has also worked with Steve Aoki. It was awesome reaction to this thank you.
I've got this song stock in my head for month and is because is so SO GOOD! the CGI Dragon is just mindblowing! Is better than other CGI's that I've found in Hollywood movies.
Okay, now that you've reacted to King Lay I have to recommend the solo artists of the SM Ent I recommend you first KAI of EXO and SuperM who has just made his solo debut and who literally broke everything with his title KAI - Mmmh then Baekhyun from EXO and SuperM the King million seller. I recommend his music CANDY
LAY can dance whatever type of dancing but he is really really serious about Krumping. This was choreograohed by Kasper and Trix (Krump teacher of Lay).
Legit watched this every morning for 1 month when it came out. Made me so hyped i can conquer anything for the day. Still gives me the chills up to now.
I’ve been waiting for his new album which is the first part of two to came out, teasers along with concept photos. It’s finally here OMG someone pinch me? I’m sadly rusty on chinese history, its like a soundtrack for a movie trailer. There’s so much but I don’t know where to start since I still can’t get over how darn hardcore LIT our boy is being with a DRAGON, LYRICS and KILLER VISUALS 👀🔥while trying to expand China to the world through his own mixed-pop style of music even though local anti fans, critics and anyone else don’t want that to happen 🙄 So in MV Lay (Lotus) is fighting against them (JADE) which is the female counterpart of LIT that Lay also plays the role. Lame antis kept calling him lotus which means “Fake who only looks innocent but is evil” so his response back to them was this masterpiece called “LOTUS” same pronunciation as “LIT”, despite the lotus being drowned in darkness; he maintains his unsoiled purity.* Regarding the Sheep name, antis also called him that which is why he responded with his song “SHEEP”. After this everyone will know who Lay Zhang is (The King/General of China) and if they don’t then they must be in extreme deep sleep. IN MY OPINION when he says “Taking China to the World” I think the he speaks for today’s generation about being done with the political issues, hatred, discrimination between countries and wants it to end because its a new year a new decade; things need to change if their countries along with the world is ever going to strive forward and he wants to be the first to break through that wall. THERE IS NO COMPETITION BECAUSE HE BROUGHT HIS UNIQUE MODERN STYLE COMBINED WITH TRADITIONAL CHINESE SOUND #TakingChinaToTheWorld #LayZhangLIT
Yixing is just another level. That's for sure. Some years ago he said he wanted to be the pride for his nation and bring c-music to the world, that time people just laugh and said he was big dreaming. And hell yes! But he's doing it sooooo great. He's just lit. ❤️
Lay, is considered to be one of the highest paid Chinese performers in Mpop (not kpop) aka a Chinese Treasure. An amazing amount of money was placed at his disposal to produce this mv.
Lay is one of my all time favorite performers. I haven't yet found a single song from him that I didn't like. especially from his newer albums, "Lit" as well as "Namanana".
I was shocked (in a good way) to see how fast yall were gaining subscribers, but after watching so many of your reactions I think I know why. At least for me, multiple person reactions typically involve a lot of talking at each other, but yall actually have a conversation with each other. It's a small difference, but it makes the videos flow so much better and they are way more enjoyable to watch when it doesn't feel like each person is competing to get their thoughts across. Anyway, I know the kpop rabbit hole can be kind of intense so I hope yall continue making these reactions because you want to rather than feeling pressured to by all the new subs. Whatever content yall choose to do in the future, I really appreciate the time/effort yall put into the kpopathon and look forward to every new video yall put out!
I would suggest PLT - hocus pocus or. igoholic for more k hip hop sounds. Also I would suggest DEAN or crush for more k r&b! there's way more than just the kpop scene or "idol" music. glad you saw Lay though since he is a member of exo as well!

Lit has similar pronunciation as lotus flower in Chinese, and it describes a Chinese religious belief of the duality of life and death. In lit mv, general Xiang Yu (in Peking opera costume) is the past life and Lay in modern clothes is the present life. Dragon is the spirit and soul, and the lotus flower and witch help pass along the spirit. Another meaning of Lotus flower is the symbol of growth and purity because it grows and blossoms out of mud. Some people also use it to describe someone who is pure and innocent in appearance but maybe opposite inside. Lay’s antis used to call him white lotus because they don’t believe such a huge star could be so honest, humble, hard working and respectful to others. They also mock at his dream of bringing Chinese music to the world, saying that all of his hard work and effort will go in vain. This song is Lay’s answer to their bully. “No one beat me down, I walk my own path, I’m the lit”.
Just to add to the pinned comment, this MV was filmed in the world’s largest outdoor studio and the production company behind the effects is Dexter Studios (one of their most famous works is the Oscar winning movie Parasite) + the money used was his own.
Lay produced and paid for this video himself, or so I read. It's an epic video. I absolutely love the traditional Peking opera elements and all the cultural references. Amazing.
I like to think of the message of Lit (Lotus) as a similar feeling you get when you read the rose that grew from concrete. Both are beautiful things that grew and flourish under harsh environments.
The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife.
Except 2 facts:
-The Chinese Opera was sung by a professional artist, not Lay;
-Lay took his krumping teacher TRIX, the world champion, to China, and studied with TRIX for 3 month, more than 8 hours/day, before the MV was shot.

Lay 🤍Another visual king from Exo🤍
He trained with a krump master for this 🔥 and he's one of the few in kpop ( although this is c-pop😅) who have done this particular style of dance. Not a lot can pull it off
NOW, SAME ARTIST, TOTALLY DIFFERENT SONG AND VIBE....

Yes China's King! Lay as a soloist is not Kpop, he's C-pop/M-pop.
He's one of EXO's Main dancer. Aside from the success as a group every member also excels as a soloist.
All EXO member can be a soloist.

He's also a member of EXO and part of the dance line
I hope you know Lay is a member of EXO. He has his own production in China and he's HUGE in China.
Love your appreciation as always.
You have to react exo lay - honey. People said he's asian chirst brown.
Lay- honey✨
Haha
The creator of Krump Tight Eyez actually praised Lay and said that it was crazy that he learned it for only 7 months and is this good at it!
Lay is one of the best dancers and one of the best krump dancer in kpop he is the king of krump dancing
Lay had learned Crumping from a Crump Master and he had put a lot of time an effort to learn the crump culture which is very inspiring and touching!
Lay yessssss I love his songs
Lay 💕
Lay lived and learned crumping in LA. He was also on a street dance show with Jackson from GOT7 in 2020 where do choreographed dance against 2 other groups. He has also worked with Steve Aoki. It was awesome reaction to this thank you.
What is crazy is that the singer Lay is also the director at the same time!
LAY - HONEY. That's the next vid you should watch.
I've got this song stock in my head for month and is because is so SO GOOD! the CGI Dragon is just mindblowing! Is better than other CGI's that I've found in Hollywood movies.
Lay is that crazy amazing artist
Lay is an incredible dancer! As in AMAZING! Watch his other work 🙏👌👏🙌🔥‼️😎
Okay, now that you've reacted to King Lay I have to recommend the solo artists of the SM Ent
I recommend you first KAI of EXO and SuperM who has just made his solo debut and who literally broke everything with his title KAI - Mmmh then Baekhyun from EXO and SuperM the King million seller. I recommend his music CANDY
Thanks for your reaction 🙏🙏
Lay is focusing krump dance for a while and he is really became a professional in the little time period. And he is so good at it 🤩
LAY can dance whatever type of dancing but he is really really serious about Krumping. This was choreograohed by Kasper and Trix (Krump teacher of Lay).
To be honest, this is exactly like a movie! Wow, it's so shocking! He is a wizard!
Lay is one of the main dancers in EXO
LAY!! LAY!! LAY!!!😍😍😍
Lay is king
The best mv i've ever seen
Lay guy can dance! You need to watch his MV Honey.
And of course, right after the intro, the video begins with the trademark of EХО - the dance depicting - the Tree of Life.
Lay Is Exooooooo
Yixing is just another level. That's for sure.
Some years ago he said he wanted to be the pride for his nation and bring c-music to the world, that time people just laugh and said he was big dreaming. And hell yes! But he's doing it sooooo great.
He's just lit. ❤️
Lay, is considered to be one of the highest paid Chinese performers in Mpop (not kpop) aka a Chinese Treasure. An amazing amount of money was placed at his disposal to produce this mv.
LAY - HONEY 💧
Lay is one of my all time favorite performers. I haven't yet found a single song from him that I didn't like. especially from his newer albums, "Lit" as well as "Namanana".
Another great lay song to try is what u need. Its bouncy and fun with r&b flavor
Lay - Honey!! its worth it to react guys I promise and the beat?! I CANT-
YAY I told you guys to watch this on the live stream and I am so happy
Another track of his called Honey, is straight up baby-making-music... and has some of THE best choreo.
the - almost look like a like movie - MV is TXT "Eternally" it looks the same as if we are watching a movie and the song is good too to listen:)
I can't believe i got to see this masterpiece *free*
Here's a thing..even the creator of krump dancing appreciated his krump dancing skills
Lit is one of the best music videos that ever existed, regardless of language
yeees, our cutie Lay^^ The MV is a masterpiece.
LAY - Honey
I would suggest PLT - hocus pocus or. igoholic for more k hip hop sounds. Also I would suggest DEAN or crush for more k r&b! there's way more than just the kpop scene or "idol" music. glad you saw Lay though since he is a member of exo as well!
you know it's a good song/beat when both of them literally bop their heads throughout the whole song
This mv is a literal movie and I love it! Lay actually paid for this mv himself and it was about 1.5 million dollars! Please react to My Turn by Cravity!
YEEAAAHHHH LAY KING OF CHINA!!
I love this mv.
Lay produces his own music, and this is M-pop (mixed mandarine pop). I'm sure you will find more in his full Albun "LIT"!
Just to add to the pinned comment, this MV was filmed in the world’s largest outdoor studio and the production company behind the effects is Dexter Studios (one of their most famous works is the Oscar winning movie Parasite) + the money used was his own.
There’s a dance practice for this song. Also react to Lay’s honey mv and dance practice.
This is definitely the most epic mv I have ever seen
THE KING THE KINGG
Lay produced and paid for this video himself, or so I read. It's an epic video. I absolutely love the traditional Peking opera elements and all the cultural references. Amazing.
lay❤️
i feel like you'll like his albums! He produces his own songs and the first solo million seller of EXO! He's a legend in China!
KING of CHINA. AND THAT IS LAY 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Ok, now you need to see his MV for Honey, Sheep and Namamna!
I like to think of the message of Lit (Lotus) as a similar feeling you get when you read the rose that grew from concrete. Both are beautiful things that grew and flourish under harsh environments.
OK, I did a marathon of your reactions. It took me more than watching Titanic. xD Very refreshing! Thank you! :)
This is most expensive mv in Asia music industry ) and this is lay own money
I think Lay's MV is the coolest! Thank you for reacting!
He is EXO members also my bias
Lay is exo
