I’ve come up with a resource eBook to help you price your forged items called the BLACKSMITH CHEAT SHEET [see the vid here- ua-cam.com/video/e5U_eobHx6s/v-deo.html] or you can download the eBook for $10 from our website at www.blacksmithpdfs.com .
The general message of "don't stress, you can't control the weather" is great for me; I work in wood rather than metal, but the philosophy still applies. How beautifully the Lord dresses the flowers of the field.
Hi James, Glad to have a craftsman of another type in the audience! We've heard from quite a few people how our business videos are applicable to them, although they aren't blacksmiths. Thanks for watching and commenting! Blessings, Jessica
Or artist. I'm interested in smithing as a hobby, but not really as a business. I AM interested in selling my art as a business, and this is relevant to that as well
These business related videos are really timely for us. I run the Ichthean Forge. We have an etsy store but none of my knives have sold. One tip (among many) that my wife got from a lady is that my items are priced too low. She said that when buyers on etsy see items priced as low as I priced mine, they see cheaply made. The names and descriptions of items was another problem. We've made a few changes and viewership has already gone up. I will be watching your videos and getting what tips I can from you as well. Thanks!
Hi Eric, I'm glad that these videos are timely for you. This is something we enjoy producing. We look forward to sharing our business knowledge with the blacksmith community long into the future. Thank you for watching, God bless you, and have a great and prosperous week!
A pricing anecdote for you: I worked in a paintball gun shop during college. We bought a real dog of a paintball gun. We could NOT sell this gun. It was getting annoying, sitting there collecting dust daily. We added a few things to it, thinking that would make it more appealing. It still didn't move. We dropped the price. More dust. We dropped the price again. Still no interest. I then took the opposite tack: I doubled what it was worth. It sold within four days. My guess: people attach STATUS to what they buy. Paying MORE for a gun was the right to SAY how much they dropped on the gun. But that is an important lesson when retailing: cheaper DOES NOT MEAN more sales.
I'm a novice Smith just starting out. I work a full time job in the customer service industry and when asked about what I do outside of work I say I'm a hobbyist blacksmith, and it generates great interest in what I make. Many ask about knives and I tell them I'm not at that skill and tooling level and explain I make hooks, bottle opener tripods and camp kits, and I great interest in my products. I dont even sell online due to the price wars, I know my skill and quality level is not where o want it to be to show for the value I would like to charge online, right now I'm getting great profits off the items I can make in my skill and tooling level
Got to say I have only subscribed to your channel only a few days ago and totally in awe of your informative videos. Im in the process of setting up my own shop and your inspirational. Thankyou
@@ChristCenteredIronworks I actually trained as a Blacksmith in the Royal Engineers in the British Army in 1997, but it's now that I am in position to start my lifelong goal.
Thank you and I am sure I will some day have to do this but the main thing is heeling for me right now, I thank upoh for sharing with us. Be blessed and enjoy living.
dude I had no idea you where in Ohio I was just talking to an older black Smith about Southern Ohio forging group last weekend. was planning to look into it
yeah I know what you mean when you pour your heart and soul into something and somebody turns around and tells you they'll give you a dollar for it it really hits deep
According to the world of work website there are 267 blacksmith businesses in Scotland. That is probably much less than in America. So does this mean that I should charge more because my work will be more rare and it will be harder to find a blacksmith in this area? If so how much more?
Glad to hear that you are being an entrepreneur! If you want to find out more about pricing, check out the other videos in our series on "Business of Blacksmithing" ~Jessica at Christ Centered Ironworks
Haha future worker my son is one and loves being in my shop with me I have my first stump anvil stand that is still in my shop with a piece of place and a 4oz. Ball peen hammer and he goes right to it and starts hammering on the plate and any of the small chunks of steel I put there my son isn't talking a whole lot yet but he will look over at me while I'm waiting on a heat to hammer out and he'll be hammering and grunt or yell dada to get my attention and he holds it up off of the plate to show me his progress LoL he isn't actually but I always encourage him and tell him you're doing well and when he is a little older I'll start showing him how to and what I know but I love these business aspect videos I've started making quantity items to refine certain skills and then quality of other items will be much better as I improve my skills and experience and marketing ability
