Nice collection of tape decks and mini deck. I have a few model cassette decks. Back in 1997 I bought a new Pioneer 100X2 reciever, double cassette deck and 25 disk CD player all Pionneer. Still works fine today with no issues. Just recently I found a few other "used" cassette decks at a local Goodwill store. Two are JVC with HX PRO circuity and one Sony also with HX PRO. All record very well and are excellent condition. I also have a few Sony Mini disk units. I have same model as yours.
High-end FM tuners (like the Denon TU-680NAB) have built-in filtering on their output to eliminate the 19kHz pilot tone, but most do not, so all cassette decks with Dolby NR have an MPX filter (even if they don't advertise it): either all the time, only when Dolby is turned on, or only when you enable it via a provided switch or button. Most people won't hear the difference, but turning off the filter provides better treble response when dubbing audio from other sources (CD, vinyl, etc.).
I recorded a LOT of music on the old TDK D90 back when I was younger. I probably should invest in a decent older style stereo system with a tape deck and cd player to play my 100 or so cassettes and probably 200 CD's.
ehehe nice find Bill! one day you will have so much cassette deck and audio equipment you can fill an entire wall with them PS: never expected a table Mini disk player, i saw only one time a Sony portable one, of a polish guy that worked with me, was really nice and really high quality, but here in Italy these kind of equipment i doubt were sold at all.
I have been buying lots of cassettes on eBay left and right, but only have a few basic stereo/cassette players to play them in. I have been looking for a good deck. I do have a trash picked Sony stereo, with a single CD, dual cassette decks, and tuner/equalizer, but it has bad belts. You got some really good finds here. That $30 Sony I think might have been the best deal. Auto loading, that is really cool. Tapes were a good find too, for ten bucks!
I've been recently looking for a cassette deck to record some tapes for my vic-20 and commodore 64. You seem to have some pretty good luck finding these where you are. Around here, most of the thrift stores have barely anything for electronics, and very rarely cassette decks.
Nice collection Bill ! Imagine having all these tape decks back in the early 90's ! By the way is it possible to make a video about cleaning and alignment on these decks ?
I think you might be a little like me, William. I love old cassette decks, my favorites being full logic transports. I even used to have a Kenwood deck that could cross fade one song into another when recording. In a way I miss them, but I miss CD players too. Physical media is quickly becoming, not obsolete, but antique.
I gotta come over where you live..., the prices on those things are ridiculous!! I scarcely ever see a tape deck here in Trinidad, and I really need one. I don't know how soon it'll be.., but I'd like to have my hands on one!! Great video by the way!!
Hello Bill. Could you make a unexpected wild tutorial on how to easily clean and demagetizing heads, and selecting the proper drivebelts on one of the decks? -MAD
Thanks excellent video. I'm a big fan of minidiscs and am in the process of transferring all my old audiocassettes mainly radiodrama from the 70's and 80's. Minidiscs are great imo and I'm surprised they never became popular. You can get some great minidisc bargains on ebay I've bought quite a few over the years.
10:52 Denon HD-8 is actually a special metal tape formulation for type 2 setting. You can record very hard on them without Dolby. This is the best type 2 tape available at the time. Sony type one are also as good as super Ferrics like TDK AD or TDK AR-X.
When I was in the NAVY on subs we used those Denon tapes to record Capt masts and such I was in charge of the maintenance and believe it or not when I ordered the tapes there charged the military 100 bucks a piece just goes to show how the military really gets great deals!
I'm in a need for a cassette deck right now, since mine has a busted drive belt (either that or one or both of the gears are stripped beyond repair) and cannot rotate the capstans so much as a nanometer. But I really don't have the money (saving up again, after I bought my camera that took two years worth of saving for) to buy one. I just may take it apart and look at it.
I have a Technics M205 Cassette deck that I bought new in 1985. Somewhat similar to your silver coloured Technics M218. I had to replace the drive motor 10 years ago. It was playing slowly, but the belts were fine. maybe your M218 has the same problem?
i happen to have a portable minidsic recorder but lots of my discs have ended up walking away on me and such so i need to find more discs for my recorder if i ever could
Wow, I too have a stack of cassette decks, possibly 20 or 30. I just can't resist them although my wife is on my case about it now. I'm going to have to narrow it down to my favorite 10 or 12 (:->
The best tape deck you've got there is the Sony one with the green light in the tape well, that really is the best one you got there, I'm sure I've seen other UA-cam users with those tape decks, I think Triangman1992 has one and possible DrCassette as well. You really do like Technics a lot don't you, you seen to have a soft spot for both Technics and Sony, I personally prefer Technics, I'll be looking forward to future videos of these and the MD recorder.
Hey uxwbill. (1) A very Happy Easter to you, your folks, Key Keeper, & Bizzare Fur Head. I hope it's a very special one for all of you. :) (2) If I were to buy more than one cassette deck from Goodwill or wherever, I would pick one to keep & sell the others on Craigslist. :) What do you think about that? :)
I have the Technics M218. It is a good solid deck. I recorded some classical solo piano off cd the other day on this deck and the speed stability is really good.
What is this Public radio and television used audio equpiment used music benefits sale. Was this at a production studio, radio station, or just an rented lot.
when minidisc cam out ,it was ment to replace cassette tapes, about 10 years ago i bought i car minidisc player by sony ,i still have it in my closet,i have a minidics recorder somewhat like yours
Hey uxwbill. (1) A very Happy Thanksgiving to you, Key Keeper, Bizarre Fur Head, your folks, & everyone else. I hope it's a very special one for all of you. :) (2) I'd like to know: Can you also repair car cassette decks as well as home cassette decks? :) If so, I have an Eclipse brand AM/FM/CD/Cassette deck (7301). The cassette deck part needs to have some serious work done. :) Thank you! :)
its stuff like npr and pbs benefit sales that each station will run their own money raising sales to make money to be able to bring u great programing. once a year various stations will have a sale in their own way whether it be for a few hours or a whole day its on the station. its a way to make more money from people that dont pledge to a station and allow people to still contribute without being gouged into paying 100 or 200 just for one item
i think the sony single well is great, the technics single well is a keeper but pretty basic. i would dump the rest. bill, you need to slim down your collection to just the quality stuff. i just dumped about 2/3 of my equipment collection and only kept the best of the best and i feel so much better. made a lot of money too. remember, you can only use one at a time so having half a dozen decks does nothing for you.
I am amazed at how CHEEP cassette decks are selling for now! Even nice 3 head ones- best deals are ones that need belts- I wish I had room to stockpile more but I can't move around here now....
@sob4081 i have a pretty old kenwood single cd player that seems to be built very well. think it is from the 80's. i would give it to you but i am in jersey and don't feel like mailing anything. we should start a swap meet thing and all of the youtube guys can swap equipment
i would get rid of the minidisc deck too. maybe fix it for fun but get rid of it. i do not advise getting into new formats because new formats mean new media to acquire which is not good for a hoarder. just sold a 300 piece laserdisc collection last night. minidisc and dat are obsolete due to easy computer audio recording. i have a 400disk sony cd player, if they had a simple harddrive based recorder, i would dump it.
Now wonder cassettes had a bad rep because ppl neglected the machines a lot. Not mention the majority who consider tape a bad format was most likely was using a cheap deck hence the poor recording quality.
You don't know what you been missing. Minidisc is the best, the best, the best. U.S.A. just did not except minidisc and I don't understand why. I used them and I thought they were great. And I'm getting back into them. Check out my site
$30 isn't stiff at all Bro. . stay off silly Wikipedia and remember what you life was like if your even over 30years old.. younger than that you wouldn't have been using tapes, cd's were and still are crap but they shut down tapes so fast to hype album sales and manufacturing sales and advertising the obvious fact that tapes must be rewinded like video vhs when returning to rental shops or a friend which caused stress on cheaper tapes especially blank home use vhs cassettes.. DAT are still great too but more stiffer price but these were studio items and still are today, no one is using cd's even today to record from to another source, we rip cd's.. tape machines went through many great phases and always added and never left out upon adding a feature making the last ranges of cassette player amazing, in the end before the total cd take over, twin cassette decks were able to record on both deck A and deck B and yes with autoreverse and interesting graphical led display for input line level for recoding and the many dolby labs noise reduction presets for those who used silly input sources and basically had no business buying any hifi systems that weren't an all in one system, hifi separates were for the old skool home audio pro in that era like many of us.
Oh, stop. Nothing about my commentary came from Wikipedia. I certainly used similar equipment when all of these things were new. Most all of this stuff was purchased in need of repair, with unknown problems. A lot of the rest of your commentary doesn't even begin to make sense. Double well cassette decks designed so could both wells could record were unusual -- certainly plenty of companies had at least one such model to offer -- but most people just didn't see the need to buy one. And your commentary about CDs is utterly nonsensical. Odds are that I'm as least as old as you are, if not older. Not that it matters.
i would get rid of the minidisc deck too. maybe fix it for fun but get rid of it. i do not advise getting into new formats because new formats mean new media to acquire which is not good for a hoarder. just sold a 300 piece laserdisc collection last night. minidisc and dat are obsolete due to easy computer audio recording. i have a 400disk sony cd player, if they had a simple harddrive based recorder, i would dump it.

Did anyone tell you what the MPX filter is for? It's to stop the FM pilot-tone from messing-up your recordings if you record from radio with Dolby.
Imagine having all these tape decks back in the early 90's !

outstanding score uxwbill love watching your shows
nice find with the tapes, I used to use the Sony CD IT's, they have really good sound, even when I made recordings on a Sound Design deck
I think you might be a little like me, William. I love old cassette decks, my favorites being full logic transports. MPX filter is to block the 19kHz pilot tone on FM broadcasts.
Thanks excellent video. I'm a big fan of minidiscs and am in the process of transferring all my old audiocassettes mainly radiodrama from the 70's and 80's. 4:12, most interesting "Ooh" sound I think I have ever heard, it somehow sounds awesome lol.
10:52 Denon HD-8 is actually a special metal tape formulation for type 2 setting. You can record very hard on them without Dolby. This is the best type 2 tape available at the time. Sony type one are also as good as super Ferrics like TDK AD or TDK AR-X.
I might slip you some green paper for one of those cassette decks when I get some. Been kinda looking for a good tape recorder.
Those Sony ES decks are nice, ES is Sony's high end stuff, good score with just those two. The MPX filter is used when recording FM-Stereo Broadcasts.
I trash picked that same model of the first deck you mentioned, it works quite well
I want to see the mini disk in action and here about it :)
What do you mean by de-magnetization? Great finds!!!!
When I was in the NAVY on subs we used those Denon tapes to record Capt masts and such I was in charge of the maintenance and believe it or not when I ordered
the tapes there charged the military 100 bucks a piece just goes to show how the military really gets great deals!
The only cassette I ever owned that actually printed through was a ToneMaster! Recorded it in 1983 and was printed through about a month after.
5:20 I have a very high quality sony stereo receiver that was a motorized volume control that is used when the remote is used.
I have a Technics M205 Cassette deck that I bought new in 1985. Somewhat similar to your silver coloured Technics M218. I had to replace the drive motor 10 years ago. It was playing slowly, but the belts were fine. maybe your M218 has the same problem?
Wicked collection UXWBill!
That technics deck you have there is almost the same as mine. My one is a Panasonic vesion with needle record meters instead of LEDs
@uxwbill I would be very much interested in seeing a repair video of that mini disc player
i happen to have a portable minidsic recorder but lots of my discs have ended up walking away on me and such so i need to find more discs for my recorder if i ever could
Was the big city DeKalb? If so, I know what Goodwill that is! By the Culvers and Farm and Fleet!
those are some pretty fancy tape players lol.
Wow, I too have a stack of cassette decks, possibly 20 or 30. I just can't resist them although my wife is on my case about it now. I'm going to have to narrow it down to my favorite 10 or 12 (:->
The Fuji DRII high bias tapes are very nice tapes.
bamaslamma1003 got stacks of them and loved them although i haven't used them i ages....
Hey uxwbill. Out of curiosity: What music material do you usually record on those blank cassettes? :) What source do you usually record off of? :)
Are you selling the sony with the deck that you opened? And when are you selling the silver teacnics player?
Hey uxwbill. (1) A very Happy Easter to you, your folks, Key Keeper, & Bizzare Fur Head. I hope it's a very special one for all of you. :) (2) If I were to buy more than one cassette deck from Goodwill or wherever, I would pick one to keep & sell the others on Craigslist. :) What do you think about that? :)
I'm running a Denon Percision Component AM/FM Stereo Receiver DRA-365R do you know anything about it or have any words of wisdom for me?
I have the Technics M218. It is a good solid deck. I recorded some classical solo piano off cd the other day on this deck and the speed stability is really good.
I member many Technics deck you had 12 years ago, an M224 and an M05 along with a Hitachi cassette deck, a Sony WM-DD and your Nakamichis.
What is this Public radio and television used audio equpiment used music benefits sale. Was this at a production studio, radio station, or just an rented lot.
Nice finds!
What do high bias and normal bias mean?
when minidisc cam out ,it was ment to replace cassette tapes, about 10 years ago

I don't accept repair jobs from UA-cam or elsewhere on the Internet. In fact, I am not accepting any repair jobs now because I do not have the time.
the pioneer is the best, I have got the CT-W208r.
ITS PERFECT!!! Makes recordings and plays like a professional deck!
Hey uxwbill, just wondering if you want to sell a pack of those FUJI DR1-11 tapes, if you still have them there pretty good tapes. Thanks Gio.
I have some minidisks which I"ve recorded onto but no longer have a working player
Do you have any left?
Another excellent and interesting video. :)
Awsome video as usual
Why oh why did I give away nearly all the cassette decks I had some few years ago? I regret that every day now.
I have... 7 cassette decks?
ive never heard about a minidisk player
its stuff like npr and pbs benefit sales that each station will run their own money raising sales to make money to be able to bring u great programing. once a year various stations will have a sale in their own way whether it be for a few hours or a whole day its on the station. its a way to make more money from people that dont pledge to a station and allow people to still contribute without being gouged into paying 100 or 200 just for one item
Fuji dr-ii were the best tapes I ever used
Hey, I've got a Technics M218, it's a really nice little machine. Not as nice as that Sony one though. O.o

How The Audio Cassette Tapes Likes Sony,TDK,Denon,Maxell & Others Cassette Tapes
@sob4081
i have a pretty old kenwood single cd player that seems to be built very well. think it is from the 80's. i would give it to you but i am in jersey and don't feel like mailing anything. we should start a swap meet thing and all of the youtube guys can swap equipment
there's a couple i'm interested in... anyway, shot you a PM.
@uxwbill ive got a single KW cassette deck. silver face
that looks old like it was from the 80's
NICE!!!
i would get rid of the minidisc deck too. maybe fix it for fun but get rid of it. i do not advise getting into new formats because new formats mean new media to acquire which is not good for a hoarder. just sold a 300 piece laserdisc collection last night.
