This AEx4 has become my most used live delay even over my H9 Max. It just WORKS! I agree with your assessment 100%. The design limitations are probably related to this being an expansion on the single Flashback. I love mine but will add two more cons: (1) MIDI implementation. Even if they would have had a MIDI off it would be useful - but you can do is select among the 3 presets. When I get a switcher looper this will solve that issue. (2). power supply. However this is just the way it goes with these types of pedals. Let me toss out a potential workaround to the switcheable delays while keeping tempo. I did not realize that with some toneprints or through the editor that there is a very sleek dynamic delay that will sense your rhythm. My patch #2 is set to a very useable Jerry McPhereson TP. If the other delays used the same parameter it could be done. Of course that brings up the con you mentioned about not being able to get or edit the factory models. I wonder if anyone ever tried to recreate them as specific TP's?
Great in-depth review. I have just one question about the tap tempo. You mentioned how when you use the tap tempo and then go back to one of your other saved presets the tempo you tapped in doesn't transfer over. Say you had a fast delay on footswitch A, then went to a slow delay on B, and then back to A, would the tempo on B, should you return again to that preset, be the tempo you initially saved onto that switch or the tempo you recently tapped in? Providing that you haven't touched the tap tempo switch since. Thanks in advance :)
I wish more gear reviews were like this! It's so hard to find details about functionality and features. I get it with distortion pedals, but especially with these kind of delay boxes there's a lot of aspects I find important such as trails and loop function. I'm looking to replace my db11 time after time. It has midi sync which is why I got it. At the time I thought I wanted an analog delay but now that I realize the difference in the high end between bucket brigade and digital delay. Do you know anything about the midi function on this pedal? I used to have a ditto x4 but it doesn't actually midi "sync" instead they never elaborated that the midi input would allow you to send sequence/parameter changes from a DAW and it didn't work for syncing the loop. Again great review thanks for sharing the knowledge!
yeah i tol' agree with you on that Delay 🤘 ....except the lack of depth it really really goes into deep atmospheric tonzZ with incredible modulations .....which means that you almost don't need other type of FXs on your board which also save space N 💰 ....the only thing i think you forget to mention is THE LACK OF A DECENT AMOUNT OF PRESETS coz with only 3 presets with such a huge amount of combinations under your feet it is so deceptive to just being able to dial in 3 miserable presets .....when it is so easy N so cheap to implement good memory into a board why put such a nonsense limitation to user creativity 😢
Good review but you contradicted yourself when you first stated that you liked having four footswitches, then later criticized the pedal for being too large. You also mentioned too much "dead space" on the pedal. There may be "dead space" on the outside surface of the pedal, but that doesn't mean there's dead space inside the pedal (where it counts). I sincerely doubt that there's a large empty cavity inside the Alter Ego...

Does it support delay trails when switching froma A to B or C and also when switching off the pedal?

I think the only model they screwed up (big time) is the 2290 with mod. The mod is just way too heavy and sea-sick sounding.
