Unfortunately that's quite typical to see of these kinds of clips out of China. So many other examples of car accidents, people falling down and getting hurt, etc. and no one even thinks to help them...like, the idea of it never even got into their heads. For all of the collectivist ideology that gets ascribed to communism, China certainly strikes me as a very individualist society where there's zero concern whatsoever for your fellow man/woman.
There was a young girl who literally stood on a bridge to commit suicide recently, and no one said anything or even tried to stop her. Then when she jumped, only one person walked to the railings, yet did nothing in the end. They literally stood there as a young girl of like 17 jumped to her death and drowned. Truly, a revolting nation.
@dieselbaby they are afraid of being sued by the injured party. Too many in the past have done this so no one in China is willing to help anyone else.
It's amazing to me what China has become. Heartbreaking! In 1996, while living in China, I was peddling my bike and running around Beijing and Shanghai and other provinces at all hours of the day and night, alone, as a woman; always feeling safe and protected. I crashed my motorbike at 1:00 in the morning in the suburbs of Shanghai, and a woman who saw the whole thing came to my aid-- very concerned, I might add. I never once! felt unsafe--not once! This is madness.
I can relate to your story, I lived in China too but decades later. I left last year. It is still mostly safe. However, the ccp propaganda against foreigners has skyrocketed...since maybe 2018? It's because of Xi, the dictator.
Yeah, it's not a beneficial behavior to help others in china as a supporter. If you wanna give hand to the victims, you might be involved in the incident and probably sued in the lasting series as an offender or a suspect. Most of the time, u would burden all or part of economic and legal punishment if you are lucky enough. Otherwise, u would afford the rest life of the rescued. Good luck, all of the foreign vistors there. God bless you.

Bystander effect. I think every place with high population density is affected by this phenomenon. I see it here in Europe too. I'm from lithuanian parents living in southern germany, very rural. When i studied, i lived in larger cities and constantly felt oppressed. Everything is regulated, cold and people are just sad and demotivated. Here in our village, unimaginable. The largest contrast i withnessed is in Mongolia. In Ulan Bataar, lots of road rage and people giving me bad looks, because my wife is mongolian ethnic (Buryat), but on the countryside, complete opoosite. The nomadic people are very hospitable and insightful. And the enviromnemt is very natural. Big cities are not designed for humans. And humans are not designed to live in big cities. We are made for nature.

They have a reputation for sticking together and antagonizing other races. (in basically every activity) There are multiple cases of this happening especially in PvP based MMOs. It is also often affiliated with hacking or cheating within the game.
I was recently stabbed randomly at a petrol station buying milk. I don't think people realise just how much it affects your life after being stabbed. I was very lucky in that I did not die, but I lost a lot of blood and was in a coma for 3 days. It took a long time for me to get back outside among the public again. I can't imagine what it would be like for this to happen to me in a foreign country. That is another level of anxiety. I hope these people make a full recovery and also do not develop a hatred of Chinese people because of the actions of a few. They guy that stabbed me had some serious mental health problems, so I blame the government and the utterly poor system for mental health here in the UK.
Let me guess he was n0n wh1te? They use mental health as an excuse. I’ve been attacked also and the dingy diver pleaded mental health. Feel no sympathy for these people, they don’t deserve anything
Here in Germany, too, there have been 52,000 knife attacks since 2017. Most of them by immigrants. Before the large immigration between 2014 and 2016, Germany had absolutely no problems in this direction
Remember! The gov wants to take away your protection in those scenarios. This is why speaking up matters. Others don’t think of this nor care to. Your voice is important
You mean how we attack asian americans here in america, oh wait, that was a pysop and it was committed by a bunch of crazies and not at all comparable to this incident?
My WeChat news feed usually shows all news stories involving foreigners, it’s almost always portraying in a negative light. So far they haven’t said anything about this. They definitely want to try to keep this under wraps.
Forty years ago their attitude was the same. Simmering resentment on the part of the Chinese. Boxer Rebellion was when many Christians were executed. One missionary realised that she and her two children couldn't escape so they knelt down. She prayed with the children, and they went first. She made sure they were safe and then bowed her head. One Young Russian was beaten to death not long after we last left in 94.
It was a question for details. Also it seems to be a rough translation. They basically asked if the foreigners started a fight or if it was a random act of violence. It is not like they asked if dude said something controversial.
Sounds like the crazies in The US killing and assaulting people who support things they hate. There was a trans guy in Massachusetts who st@bbed multiple young ladies.
Why are people still visiting China? Like of all the destinations and places you could patronize with your hard earned money... China? I don't understand. So many better options in the vicinity.
Because 95% of people have no idea what it is. They think of China as a funny place with people that wear straw hats, make cheap stuff, and have a big wall.
I agree its an odd choice for pure tourism, especially for a North American (not that there aren't beautiful places in China I'd like to see on a clear day), but maybe they just got a screaming deal on the trip lol. Plus the one guy we saw as older. Maybe he's visited before, back when it was better. Or maybe he even has Chinese family via his wife or a son/daughter-in-law. Or maybe he's there for work, and just wanted to go see some of the country while he was there. Could be any number of reasons.
Things have changed a great deal in the 14 or so years since I last lived in China. As a foreigner then, I really stood out, particularly outside of Beijing. For example, when I flew in to Shenyang (a city of more than 5 million) I swear I was the only white person that most of the population had ever seen. At that time, the people wore mostly smiles and wanted photographs with me. As a Canadian, the reception was mostly welcoming, with only a few negative interactions. The majority of Chinese people I met travelling throughout the northwest Provinces were openly friendly towards white foreigners, even towards those Americans I encountered while there. It's sad to see that the animosity directed at the US has increased. The reasons are obvious, as anti-western CPP propaganda has really ramped up since then.
I have lived in China for a while, including in the city you mentioned. Never had any bad experience, including when going out alone at 2 AM. I had always met very nice people, always welcoming. White guy too. But that was 20 years ago. It's sad if things have changed for the worse, because the country is nice, the people and the culture are nice.
The four victims are instructors from Cornell College in Iowa that travelled to China to visit the sister university. This is from an article posted by the New York Times.
I was waiting for you guys' take. I learned in Corona that you guys know better than the press what goes on in China. I still remember warning everyone weeks in advance. GJ

I wouldn't have stepped foot in china over the cash rewards for informing on foreign "spies". Someone looking for a quick buck will stop you from going back home.
As a foreigner whose been living in China for 6 years now, I woke up today and saw the news and there is information available now, the 4 foreigners are American teachers from Cornell's -Iowa branch. It's a shame, I can agree with what you guys said about after so many years of anti-foreigner semantics this is the result. Attacks on foreigners in China ARENT a new thing, but they also aren't a prevalent thing. In 6 years this is my first time hearing of foreigners being attacked.
do you think the general populace has any idea of the state china has been in the last few years? most people think it's an amazing place, the only thing most people know is that china products are mass produced, low quality stuff
Between the CCP's PR tourist campaign on social media (not just tourist shots, but a lot of quora articles are dominated by little pinks) and the ignorance of foreigners who think China is safe it doesn't surprise me that there are still many who aren't aware of the danger. The CCP also clamped down on any media organisation that reports "negatively" on events in China, to the point where they will harass/abduct reporters and ban them from the country.
They have better inside sources than mainstream media. Better than some governments... It's why Matt and Winston are probably the most hated youtubers by the CCP.
Chinese folks won't touch an accident or something like this because they can be held responsible. That's why you see clips of crazy stuff and no one helps. We have ambulance chasers, they have this.
The government won't be able to sweep this one under the carpet. It was 4 American college instructors from Cornell College in Iowa. Reports now on NBC News, BBC and The Guardian.

Keep your wife in ready proximity to answer questions you can't. As the guys said, 99.9% of people will be warm, kind, and curious, and not really have a sense of decorum by your standards.
I believe it is a legal thing. If you give aid you become legally responsible. People abused they system so nobody helps now.

去中国旅游,最好不要去东北三省和河北省,这些地方有时会有些不守规矩帮派分子
If you are able to defend yourself in such situation in China, then after (maybe even during) you will probably be accused to be the attacker.

What troubles me is that there are people standing by, but not many providing help or even comfort.
It's an 'voyeur' rather than 'active participant' society, if they get involved they fear being brought into the issue
most people over their mind their business and don't like being involved.
That's fairly common in East Asia/SEA. Not just a China thing.

Why are people still visiting China? Like of all the destinations and places you could patronize with your hard earned money... China? I don't understand. So many better options in the vicinity.
Same as the people that go to a north korea knowing they get a guide that shows them attractions and actors...people are just stupid asf
Same as the US for us Europeans then. Never again...
Why are people still traveling to america? London? France? Are there no violence in these places?
True, they blamed everything on foreigners. It's a bad time to be in China for a vacation for sure. Thanks for this report! 👍

Many people are not informed
Between the CCP's PR tourist campaign on social media (not just tourist shots, but a lot of quora articles are dominated by little pinks) and the ignorance of foreigners who think China is safe it doesn't surprise me that there are still many who aren't aware of the danger.
The CCP also clamped down on any media organisation that reports "negatively" on events in China, to the point where they will harass/abduct reporters and ban them from the country.
