- Meet Jasper my mum's rescue cat. We've compared his meows to our Maine Coons. Can you tell the difference?

I love the little trills that Maine Coons typically make. They also purr both on inhale and exhale.

Well said. I had a tabby domestic cat and she has NEVER meowed like a normal cat. She often did Rrru-aww, meow-meow-ru-meow, and my favorite meow-aw but super high pitched as if air is forced out of her larynx. I always responded back when she did that and she would respond back doing the same high-pithed meow-aw.
She passed away last year and I still miss her everyday 😢

I had a 35 pound male maine coon that talked "baby" sounds til I went to take him to the vet for the first time. Guy was in the back seat and I nearly went off the riad when this HUGE bobcat sound came out of him! I agree with Jorant... each cat has his/her own sets of sounds. My ordinary cat and I actually learned to communicate in "cat". It was awesome. I lost Tigger at 8 due to liver cancer and miss her all the time. She even learned to say... Mama.
Our Fred does that in the car, makes a weird deep sound. He's 26 lbs, big but smaller than your boy❤

He has gentle chirps, murrs, owww, hummm, mmm-mmm. So gentle,so loving, extremely vocal, very spoiled, and very attached to me. We talk all day long, and I love him dearly!😹-😂💞🐾😻

@@MaineCoonDaily He's a brown tabby with white paws, weighs 23 lbs. He is so loving, affectionate, chatty, fluffy, snuggle bug!. They truely are a different breed. We also have a long haired tuxedo colored cat named Lucy.
We're waken every morning at 4 am greeted with roaring purrs, wet noses, and nudges Trying not to move hoping for just a few more minutes of sleep, then comes the pawing at my face every so gently,... mission accomplished 😹🐈😻 Always had and loved cats my whole life. They are so special and will forever have my hear!🧡

I found a Maine coon kitten at 3 weeks and he had the tiniest trill meow I’d ever heard. I thought it was because he was small, but he still does the same squeaky quiet trill

I don’t think I’ve ever met an ordinary cat in my life 🤣 The short hair ginger boy was Jasper, my mum’s cat. We just lost him to lymphoma so are all heartbroken. It makes you realise you need to cherish every single day with them ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I've only ever heard one other cat that sounded like my cat. He never meowed. He sort of squeaked or started a meow but the last 80% of it was more of a grumble. I can hear it in my head but I've never been able to do an impression of it. So unique.

Norwegian Forest Cats sound very similar to the Maincoon. My kitty doesn't meow, she churps, Shes a Norwegian Forest Cat. Her churp is so cute. If she gives a full meow, it's exactly like this Maincoon.

I have one cat that I believe has some Maine Coon in her. She has long fur and is very gentle. She also sounds like your kitties much quieter than my other Hienz 57.

My Maine Coon sounded like a rusty gate, an old witch, and yodeled (which on several occasions was thought to be a child screaming.) He also purred like a motorboat and was just the best cat to grow up with.
We have a squeaky gate - Mona the black tortie in this video. She's also the queen of purrs. Your cat sounds like they were a fabulous character.

My cats are probably 1/4 Maine Coon. One meeps like a casual Maine Coon with the ear tip fur the other cries like a street cat and has the tail of a Maine Coon. Both are fluffy and littermates of a female American domestic calico. They're both Ginger. The girl has more white. But they carry Maine Coon spirit. My boy acts like a dog and my girl cleans like one. My boy spends a quarter his waking hours caring for his gorgeous tail.
They sound gorgeous. Oscar loves his tail and really keeps it clean and mat free 😂❤

Ohhh it's like a choir of angels singing to me. My uncle who ran his mouth all day long would yell at his cat that meowed three times a day. Im like is it really that painful to hear, you literally flap your gums a million times a day. I love everything about cats they are my favorite animals.

I have an "ordinary" cat and it sounds like this Maine coon...
I’ve owned cats of all shapes and sizes who have produced the same sounds as my current 4 Maine Coons. I think it’s safe to say, there’s really no such thing as an ordinary cat ❤️

I may have said before, but from my MCs I mostly get trills and squeaks, BRROOOOO (it's not quite a trill or a chirp, a kittenish remnant sound maybe as it's mostly to his cat mum), and WAAH (the WAAHs are often for me to accompany him to the toilet 😹).
My old tuxedo girl had the sweetest little high pitched cry, used sparingly for greater effect and my tiny Siamese cross an extremely loud and slightly hoarse sounding MMMRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAWWWW that would vibrate her entire tiny 2kg being if she wasn't in my arms yet, even when she had just woken up from a nap she had chosen not to sleep on me for!
You've had so many different cats. How many do you have at the moment?
@@MaineCoonDaily I've only had 7 total, all in sets of twos. Unfortunately one of my ex breeding Maine coon ladies we got together died very quickly of kidney failure having been born with the only a single dodgy kidney, which is why we soon ended up with our other lady's son as coming from a many cat environment she got very upset when she was left alone, which is how 7 fits into twos.
When I was born we had a black cat who didn't like kids but loved to flag down passing adults to ride on their shoulders down the street (was a great moment for me when I was 13 and deemed large enough!) and her tuxedo sister who adored kids and acted as my personal guard, completely passive and sweet until I was teething and she thought my dad had hurt me so she savaged his feet!
Then we had my sweet adventurous tuxedo girl and our mini Siamese cross, we lost them last year and now we have our mother and son Maine coons after we lost our other lovely, chirping girl who used to trumpet her arrival into rooms and was utterly adorable.

Yeah, we had a terrible 14 months losing our two 20 yr old ladies 6.5 months apart (they'd lived with my partner and I for years since my parents divorce) then it was a huge blow to lose our new sweetheart less than 7 months later again. (I'd been happy but also crying my eyes out missing my old ladies for weeks when we got the new girls, but we really missed having cats and I developed skin peelingly awful cat allergies while I was at university without cats that took years to fade so we didn't want to risk being without cats for long, we partly got really different cats so we wouldn't be reminded of our old girls when we looked at them).
Still, little boy loved us from the minute we got him home and we are very happy with them both now. We'll have had our girl a year end of January and she's my sweet, opinionated darling and way less shy now. Little boy is a total character and he makes us laugh constantly with his strange meerkat gremlin antics! Oh no, another excessively long comment, sorry!

1 of the main reasons I went for an MC is because they were described as very talkative. Probably 1 of the best things that could have haven't to me in the covid lockdown. We still have lengthy conversations although i'm pretty sure she doesn't always understand me either :-) earlier this evening I was explaining how i had to kill beasts in my game to earn things and while i was riding around she was 'swiping' my screen, trying to catch birds an other critters :-D

Yes, Maine Coons as a breed do have a different meow from most other breeds. Norwegian Forest Cats, from which they are descended, have a similar varying vocal pattern. It’s usually more flexible, which is the source of the chirps and trills. Unlike most other cats, where the meow stays at one note at a more consistent rate, Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats “sing”, or vary their vocal tones. This is their trademarks, as well as their similar appearance. While there are, of course, exceptions to this rule, it’s a general guide on what makes these kitties so special.
I’m a cat nerd, not to mention I’ve had both a Maine Coon mix and a Norwegian Forest Cat mix in my lifetime. I find them incredibly fascinating. Their similarities are more than one would think at first glance. Cats are my favorite hyperfixation. I’m quite literally obsessed with them. I don’t know exactly why this vocal variation happens with these breeds, but I certainly would love to find out.

We’ve owned Maine Coons for over 25 years and have spent hours and hours looking at their history and doing lots of breed research (I write about Maine Coons on my blog, petskb.)
I find some of the theories of their origin quite bizarre and think it’s most likely that they are descendants of Norwegian Forest cats who came over with the Vikings from Norway. You’re right they are similar breeds.
