It's always such a pleasure to see you! I submit that "should've went" is just wrong, wrong wrong in anybody's English! I do love hearing different dialects! Thank you for delightful programs!
I clearly remember being taught never to use "and" such as one hundred AND one. But it's done a lot here in the U.S. Also " I seen" rather than "I saw" or "I have seen". Ugh! 😊 Great episode ❤
I've loved your American vs. British English discussion. I'm an American and have a degree in English, and I work in publishing, so I work with the language a lot. Although I like studying English grammar and dissecting the language, I do love dialects and regionalisms. I'm fascinated by the many different dialects English from all over the world. I especially love listening to British English speakers. Would it be rude if I said that the way you talk is adorable? Lol. By the way, "should've went" is used a lot here, but it's wrong, very, very wrong. And route (root or rowt) is used either way in the US. Thank you for your awesome videos. It's a highlight of my week.
It absolutely drives me bonkers when someone says, "should've went". Oh my goodness. There is nothing correct about that in any language. I'm an American, and there are a LOT of English grammar errors that make me cringe.
I was going to comment on the incorrect usage of "should've went" as well. I don't hear that phrase very much here in Texas, thankfully. But certainly, Texans have their own quirky ways of speaking!! I think there's American English, British English and Texan English, lol!!
I was going to say the same thing about "should've went". So many people, including on UA-cam or in real life, use really poor grammar these days. Drives me "bonkers" as Kay would say.
Thank you Dan, The Rise and Fall of the Monasteries has enriched my life. The quality of your production blows me away. I have learned so much and that is a special gift.
Thank you for another great episode! So entertaining! "Windschief" is a German expression that we use a lot here in the North of Germany for things that are slightly askew (due to the strong winds up here)
Another GREAT episode, LOVE the Rise and Fall of the Monestaries...but looking forward to Kay's " My Favourite Blanket" as I have two on the go right now and can not wait to see the next section 😊Thank you both for all your hard work!❤🥰🇨🇦,Sharon.
“I should have went” is grammatically incorrect in the US too. The problem is that it has been used that way for so long, many people accept it as being correct. It drives me bonkers whenever I hear someone say it!!
I absolutely enjoy watching you two so much, your content is excellent. I’m from Ramsgate, Kent where we have a rich history re St Augustine. We have St Augustines cross, Abbey and monastery. The Abbey was built by Pugin in 1860. 😊
I go bonkers too when I hear should've went! I am always correcting my grandkids! I lived in England for 4 years, and had a flaming accent which everyone loved! In school I was made to talk in front of the class, just to hear me, and I was terrified., that was when I returned to the US. One thing I say when asked my zip code 03820, I say 0, not zero! funny. A lot of people I see, agree about the grammar thing! The Monasteries', so good. Looking forward to the Summer Tutorials, Kay,
LOL Kay. You are cracking me up. I agree the colors are a hot mess. And usually everything you make is colorful yet perfectly harmonious. That was an interesting and amusing experiment. 😂
It’s so hot here in Texas 97° Fahrenheit and when I converted it to Celsius, it was like 36.11. But it’s been over 100 a few days. I just want some cool air lol I am loving the color of the socks and the pattern!
Saint Agustine, Florida. The oldest town in the USA! It was founded by Spaniard conquistadors in 1565 and has the famous Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth!!!!
Dan's hat for his mom, there will be enough yarn for an ensemble. Or maybe a pair of thicker, warmer socks for his mom. All from the same sirdar ball of yarn.
Windschief in German means no longer straight, off-kilter. Maybe because of the pattern on the hat? That would be my thought. Kay, your socks are absolutely stunning, and I already bought the pattern. I'll start knitting them up starting next weekend (gotta get my current socks off the needles first).
“I am stood..” and “We were sat…” are perfect examples of the difference between the American and British English! 😊 American: “I am standing…” and “We were sitting…”
As a Canadian, I was taught English grammar and spelling. I think the phrase you heard was grammatically incorrect. There are a lot of words in the US spelled differently - colour vs color and neighbour vs neighbor are two that come to mind immediately. I really dislike spell check trying to steal my 'u' all the time. Lol.
Should have went is bad grammar in the US but you hear it everywhere, especially in the middle of the country. I call it past participle abuse. Have ran is another one. It curls my toes when I hear it.
I'm Australian, I teach English, and have so many problems with the students using American spelling. They are so immersed because of social media, and TV and streaming that they become Americanised.
I found your podcast only recently, and I LOVE Dan’s segment on The Rise and Fall of the Monasteries! Which Bakery Bears shows contain the previous monastery episodes?
The series began within our Video Show on February 4th 2023 and has run every four weeks after that date. You can actually watch the directors cut of the very first episode here www.patreon.com/posts/rise-fall-of-1-78011221
Dan, I love your monastery series. But please tell me what the word is that keeps coming up as “pre-monster attention” in the captioning. It’s unfamiliar to me and I can’t quite get it. Thanks.
The word is actually Premonstratensian. As we discovered in the episode they are an order of Canons who live like Cistercians who we visited at Jervaulx but who go out into their communities to work. That’s why they’re known as Canons not Monks. Best wishes! Dan
"Should have went" is not how we speak. It's probably more an Indicator of education, or proof of the failure of the education system here in the US, or nervousness of being in front of a camera-or a mix of all. It's kinda like "My Fair Lady" in a weird way. I dont often comment, but language is fascinating. Also, poor grammer is a pet peeve of mine, even though I do not always have the best grammer myself.
Oh my gosh…..sadly grammar in the US and sadly in many UA-camrs is horrendous. It is “should have gone!” Also, another huge grammar error is “here’s where we’re at” ….. ugh! Please, it’s “here’s where we are”…..no prepositions at the end of a sentence/question🤪🤪🤪🤷♀️
“I should have went” is grammatically incorrect. “Went” does not require the helping verb “have”. The correct phrase is “”I should have gone”. Kim in America
Please believe that correct grammar is still the ideal, the goal, in the US. I am embarrassed by association. Apparently the young man you heard speaking on American TV slept through fourth grade English class.
no, that was grammatically wrong! you hear too many people using double negatives! I taught 5th grade for 31 years drives me nuts! I live in the states.
“Ishould’ve went” is sooo grammatically incorrect in America! Things like this drive me crazy! Please do not judge our language ability by our sports players and commentators!😂
Oooooh no, no, no....."should have went," is equal to nails on the chalkboard. 🫢 Correct grammar seems largely ignored in the US, unfortunately. I find my mother channelling through me when I am silently correcting news anchor while my jaw is clenched.
It's always such a pleasure to see you!

Yes about “root” and “rout.” I say “root” and I grew up in Pittsburgh.
I was going to say the same thing about "should've went". So many people, including on UA-cam or in real life, use really poor grammar these days. Drives me "bonkers" as Kay would say.
Yes, “should’ve went” is incorrect in America as well! 😵💫😁
Thank you Dan, The Rise and Fall of the Monasteries has enriched my life. The quality of your production blows me away. I have learned so much and that is a special gift.
Agreed!
Oh really love the fairground socks!! Definitely getting that pattern!! Love the rise and fall of the Monasteries series!! Very interesting.
Another great episode!! Beautiful socks and history too. ‘Really, really nice”
I love love love Freckled Whimsey yarns! I think I need your Fairground socks... :)
Thank you for another great episode! So entertaining! "Windschief" is a German expression that we use a lot here in the North of Germany for things that are slightly askew (due to the strong winds up here)
If I get a pay raise, I will become a patreon! I just love you both to bits!
Wow guys sooo much content! You guys are amazing! 🤩✨🌸👌🌈🫶
Love your new socks ,Kay!!!wow the stripey yarn really pops,,,!,,
Definitely buying the pattern,,,,
Great show ,Dan!!!
What a fun one,,,,
Elaine🏠🏠💖💖
Auggie the Big Doggie!!! I can hardly wait til that part of the show. I love it when my passions collide--knitting and theology ❤
I have just purchased your latest sock pattern you have inspired me, Kay, thank you xxx😊
Loved this episode and I definitely agree that "I should have went" is always wrong. My US teachers would never have allowed that kind of grammar.
I’ll be purchasing this wonderful sock pattern….thank you!!!
The term “potato chippy” in America is based on an advertisement for the Lay’s brand of potato chips with the tagline “you can’t eat just one”.
“I should have went” is grammatically incorrect in the US too. The problem is that it has been used that way for so long, many people accept it as being correct. It drives me bonkers whenever I hear someone say it!!
Had to immediately get this sock pattern and cast on right away! Such a pretty pattern!
I love those socks❤

I live on Amelia Island northeast Florida just above St. Augustine, America's oldest city. Great episode. Epic history lesson. Thank you!
Yeah! Another Florida knitter!
Me too! Just down in Gainesville. I love Dan’s history reports!

Moonglow Yarns has a similar kit of minis. So cute!
We have a village called St-Augustin, but here in the province of Quebec in Canada most villages are named after saints. Great show you two.
LOL Kay. You are cracking me up. I agree the colors are a hot mess. And usually everything you make is colorful yet perfectly harmonious. That was an interesting and amusing experiment. 😂
In America, “I should have went” is grammatically incorrect as well! It should be “gone” you guys are right!

I loved your podcast. Your socks were beautiful. I was knitting a long working on a sleeve. Happy summer
Saint Agustine, Florida. The oldest town in the USA! It was founded by Spaniard conquistadors in 1565 and has the famous Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth!!!!
We have lots of St Augustin's in Australia. Just in Sydney we have a few churches, a college, and primary schools.
We watch so much British television that when my granddaughter learned to speak she called the stove the cooker. Lol
Dan's hat for his mom, there will be enough yarn for an ensemble. Or maybe a pair of thicker, warmer socks for his mom. All from the same sirdar ball of yarn.
Brilliant
Another enjoyable episode. Kay, I love the cowl and Dan, I think you’ll be designing your own patterns very soon. Can’t wait.
Windschief in German means no longer straight, off-kilter. Maybe because of the pattern on the hat? That would be my thought.
Kay, your socks are absolutely stunning, and I already bought the pattern. I'll start knitting them up starting next weekend (gotta get my current socks off the needles first).
No Kay! "I should have went" is grammatically incorrect here in the USA! Ask my children, they call me the Grammar Police! Love you, Diane in SC
Hello from Mounds Illinois.
“I am stood..” and “We were sat…” are perfect examples of the difference between the American and British English! 😊
American: “I am standing…” and “We were sitting…”
We have St Augustine Cathedral in downtown Tucson Az- but we pronounce it different than you do

We have a St. Augustine's church and school here in Rhode Island where my son in law went to elementary school
Lol. Yes, I should have went IS grammatically wrong in the US, too. 😂😂😂
I actually live in a town called Sankt Augustin, which is near Cologne in Germany :)
Should have went is bad grammar in the US but you hear it everywhere, especially in the middle of the country. I call it past participle abuse. Have ran is another one. It curls my toes when I hear it.
Just an FYI. At least in the US, putting the and in a number signals the decimal point. So if you say one hundred and one you would write it 100.1.
I’m in the US one hundred and one means 101. Decimal point is one hundred and one point one.
In Canada, we would say one hundred point one for 100.1 and one hundred and one for 101.
I worked in a bank and if the check was written like that the and would be taken as a decimal point.
We were taught in school that an “and” represents the decimal point. Of course, that was last century! 😂
We live near St Augustine Florida. Our oldest city. Altho there is a debate that Pensacola May be oldest.
Kay, did you finish your shawl? I can’t wait to see it finished. 🙂
Not yet! I had to take a rest from it while I got the Fairground Socks design finished. I’m back to it now and hope to show it next time ❤

I live in st Augustine florida lmao sooooo
Love St Augustine, Fl. We were married at Memorial Presbyterian. Such a beautiful city
St. Augustine, Florida is well regarded as the oldest city in the United States.
There's a St Augustine's church in my local town Drogheda
I walked past St Augustine's Hospital en route to work in Durban RSA.
You say maths, we say math. :)

There is a church in our parish.
What is the name of the cabled sock pattern that Dan is knitting?
I designed it for Dan so there isn’t a pattern right now for it I’m afraid 💖

Yikes. Chicken Pox Sox. LOL. The 2 yarns are not cohesive. Quite discombobulating to look at them.
"should have went" is incorrect on both sides of the pond! Just saying.
Canadian English is closer to British English!
