I used to work in a scrap yard for about 10 years over here in Australia. You are 100% correct about the scrap being colorful. We used to get everything... refrigerators, washing machines, cars, roofing iron... just to name a few. And yes, we also received rusted metal, cast iron even railroad spikes, rail etc. We even had 2 trams and a steam engine tender. All of the non ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, electrical cable, brass etc) where all unloaded and sorted inside a huge shed, loaded into designated bins and then loaded onto a flat semi and taken to our main facility. We had different categories for the ferrous metals, but all that stuff was loaded into a semi with a tipper and taken to the main facility. I started off working in the shed but then ended up operating the excavators (magnet and grab) to unload customers that came in and to load the trucks to go out.
Thanks for all the great drone footage, DJ. In the mid-60's when I was in college, I worked four summers at U.S. Steel's Gary Sheet & Tin works. Specifically I was in the 30" hot strip dept. I saw a lot of steel slabs and the coils made from them. Of course, the EJ&E was the whole RR story there. There was a siding inside our building for loading gons with scrap. Boy, those cars took a real beating! I'm surprised they remained road-worthy after they were loaded.! Cheers.
A have a Auto Scrap Stripper/Scrap yard 'Sanford and Son' on my layout. If you use google you can look up time frames it it will give the percentage of materials used to build cars. Steel, Aluminum, Plastic etc. What I have done, I used the percentages from 1960's and 1970's averaged them out for 1996 (20 Year of usage life) This gives my a good idea of metal ratios as well as junk like plastics and glass for my era. Now If we go all the way we know the percentage. I now can look up the weight of bailed/compressed material. Compare that to GB weight capacity and CuFt. So my cars are properly load and have the correct ratio of cars per materiel leaving the Auto strippers. Yes it is over the top. But I have done the same thing for the Cement and Sugar Beets as well as the cannery. Correct ratio and tonnage per product dictates the rail car traffic
Great video DJ! Are you sure that the ends of the pipe, in the gondolas, were painted? Sometimes the ends of the pipe are threaded, for well service, and they will have a red plastic cap to protect the threads.
Thanks for all the videos on operations. I've been doing modeling since I was very young but never knew how railroads worked. As I look at the steel & scrap operations in Cincinnati, Middletown and Newport, KY, it all makes sense now how they operate in unison around the Ohio River. It appears kind of haphazard if you don't have a clue what is going on but there is method in their madness. I can see the cars going back and forth from place to place and it all has its own order to it.

I might try to implement a scrap yard on my layout and your videos do give me inspiration but I know I won't have the room for a full fledged steel mill but those loaded gondolas can go to staging and return empty. Do you have anything on diesel refueling near a roundhouse? I'm modeling late steam/early diesel and wondering if the RR would have a specific track set aside to empty diesel filled tank cars to the storage containers. Thanks again!

As usual, excellent video DJ. And as far as the painted ends of the pipes, I know from driving a truck for 40 years and hauling anything and everything on a flatbed, that in some cases the color of the painted ends is a quick indicator of the size or diameter of the pipe so there is no confusion when loading.

I used to love going by those industries. I never was assigned to service them. I've always liked scrapyards, esp. with the magnetic cranes. Two more RR names from my past: Jerry Kirk and Dan Stuckey. Oh, and two trainmasters at Connellsville named Koster and Ruck. One at Glenwood named Dan something. A huge guy they called Butch.
Great content. I use a flashing transmitter on my scrap yard to make it look like somebody is working with a cutting torch and I also make my chain link fences using scrap screen. You can use the old metal type and you can solder it or you can use the cloth and then paint it silver.
Great work!! I live near all of these places - drive by them regularly. It is so cool to see them all from a different view. (and to get a view of the DuraBond site like that was great for my current project!! )

DJ- Each pipe also carries painted markings that will help the installer by providing information on the pipe length, identify pipe suitable for field cutting and assist in the proper installation of the material. Lifted that from the www. Good prototype info though to make realistic loads. Some have line around circumference to indicate it’s pushed “home” during install...
I really enjoy your videos on the steel industry, the BOF operation as well as the coke plant. I am attempting to model some of the steel industry in the Pittsburgh area. The information from your videos helps me model it correctly.
Been building up a small Foundry. Aluminum Scrap to products. Just added a second siding for storing empties or loads for Switching. Consists of an old small plant and a new modern steel building. Will be a third building n the Complex. Want to get it to 2 Stories. Just added 2 52’ Gondolas to serve it. Total of 4-5. Empties or with Scrap Loads. Plus have Coke Hoppers. All in N Scale. It’s developing into a good Switching point.

The future of URR runs to Irvin. The good news is that the end of slab production will not be the end of 76 crew running to Irvin. In fact this will possibly increase movements to the Irvin works. The process at ET will only produce raw coils and these coils will be "thick" or a heavy gauge. These coils will be shipped via the URR to Irvin for finishing. The ratio of slabs to coils I am told is at minimal 4:1 so that is going to be a lot of coils going up the hill! Due to the geography and space inside ET the coil trains will be limited in size so this will likely result in a extra turn or two a day.
We are being told that the likely candidate for the cars to handle these raw coils will be GRW coil cars, there are quite a lot of these in storage all over the URR. I would suspect that the hoods will be scrapped. I also understand this process will slightly increase coil scrap from Irvin back to ET.
I have been told that the ends of the pipe are not coated so it can be welded (internal or externally) without the coating preventing a good weld. They paint the ends, to protect them in transit and storage from the elements, with a paint that will easily come off with a wire brush just before its welded.
Doing what is now done at the Irvin rolling mill works at the Mon Valley Works site like was mentioned, that is part of the improvement project that was cancelled, right?. So they are keeping the Irvin Works as is then?
I've seen a lot of your videos and they're great! I came across this one because I'm considering modelling part of the Garrett Subdivision, so in Indiana, and part of it has a big section with SDI north of St. Joe. There are a LOT of steel related businesses there. I'm thinking about this being one far point, a couple places in between with grain and plastic pellets, and then Garrett yard. I won't really have a way to run any through freights that don't pertain to these. Any thoughts? I'm not sure what kinds of cars would work best for SDI. I've seen the stuff on Google maps, but again, there's just so much it's overwhelming, and I don't know enough.

Good shooting....too bad the sintering plant isn't still open up towards Greenville....would of been perfect for drone flying....when I worked the slab train if the tracks were wet from rain and dew/fog in the morning it took a few tries going up the hill even the best engineer had issues....this will be short lived....once the new expansion is done this sight will be long gone...IF they ever get it built.
Hi D J my name is Greg I have a question for you how does the CSX Lay-off affect you up there in the northern part of the country? Do you expect to get furloughed behind the layoffs? I live in Atlanta I’m close to Folkston Georgia , Waycross Georgia.
They furloughed about a hundred guys below me in seniority. They created a short term conductor reserve board which ended recently. I was 4 away from being cut to conductor after 21 years! The business is slowly coming back, but they refuse to bring back enough guys to handle it, and trains sit. They just make 1 train out of 3. I had 4 trains in one recently. GREED PURE GREED, so they don't have to pay insurance and benefits. Meanwhile, we are exhausted from covering the nearby pools that are understaffed.
Painting the end is likely to designate it's use. It took me 6 tries to get a video recorded on the part of my layout that will have the 30' long 2.5' deep steel mill that will move 1,072 cars per op session.
2 engines pulled 1.5 miles today. So 5 engines, 2 in front, 2 in mid, 1 at rear would make this scenario possible, but very unlikely due to our infrastructure isn't designed for it.
Good video. Wished that someone would do stuff about the L&N before the mega mergers. Lots of American history involves railroads the people that built them and even the major owners themselves.
I live very far away so it wasn't one that I knew a lot about. Maybe someone reading this can put together a video. I was born in 1970 but didn't start taking pics and videos of trains until after the mergers like you mentioned. Huge regret.
@@djstrains CSX is a mega merger. I will have to review who all is involved. The C comes from the Chessie System (C&O/B&O the first railroad in America, and SCL Seaboard Coast Line. There are many lines included (L&N, Western Maryland, Pete Marqute, GeorgiaRail Road, Clinchfield Railroad just to mention a few). Then there is the PPR and New York Central (Penn Central) which became Conrail after bankruptcy. This is all in CSX. I can’t forget Monon and several others. This is half of the US!
@@djstrains Rail roads were built to carry products such as steel and oil. Oil is far cheaper to transport in pipe lines than on trains. However millions of tons of chemicals are still transported. So if you are modeling then you have to have such places along your tracks. One last thing. One of the list railroads of Indiana is the Monon. It went from Chicago to Louisville. However they came on the scene to late and did own entry to either city. There is a hard cover book on this railroad. Many stories but to short of time to tell them. Indians Railway museum runs an excursion train on a remaining portion of their tracks in Southern Indiana.
NS, CSX, CP and CN use numbers, only BNSF, UP and KCS use letters. Each series is for a specific type of train. Like CSX 000-099 are high priority Intermodal.
From what I can gather from doing the "Google on the Internet Machine" it is primer coat to protect the bare ferrous metal. Beyond that it's a guess why it is. Arsinio (sp?) Hall you to say, "Things that make you go hmmm?"
I follow all the laws. Now that I am licensed, I was able to obtain authorization to fly within 5 mies of the county airport, which allowed me to finally get the shots!

That's a challenging shove up that trestle grade, that many loads---even with locos that have sand on a dry day for EMD SW1500's.

DJ, I noticed yesterday that the new building near the main gate at ET totally blocks the view of Kennywood when driving on Braddock Ave.

Hi D J my name is Greg I have a question for you how does the CSX Lay-off affect you up there in the northern part of the country? Do you expect to get furloughed behind the layoffs? I live in Atlanta I’m close to Folkston Georgia , Waycross Georgia.
They furloughed about a hundred guys below me in seniority. They created a short term conductor reserve board which ended recently. I was 4 away from being cut to conductor after 21 years! The business is slowly coming back, but they refuse to bring back enough guys to handle it, and trains sit. They just make 1 train out of 3. I had 4 trains in one recently. GREED PURE GREED, so they don't have to pay insurance and benefits. Meanwhile, we are exhausted from covering the nearby pools that are understaffed.
Painting the end is likely to designate it's use.
It took me 6 tries to get a video recorded on the part of my layout that will have the 30' long 2.5' deep steel mill that will move 1,072 cars per op session.
Thats a lot of cars.

L161 local out of Demmler, 7 pm start. Only when needed, not guaranteed 7 days.
If you had 4miles of loaded coal hoppers how many locomotives would you need to pull them and would it be better to spread the locomotives out?
2 engines pulled 1.5 miles today. So 5 engines, 2 in front, 2 in mid, 1 at rear would make this scenario possible, but very unlikely due to our infrastructure isn't designed for it.
where is this scene at 0:12, Pittsburg area I am thinking. I had to deliver a load of aluminum siding and was down in that area yrs ago I believe

The ends of the pipe are red probably because if they slide you will see the end before it hits you or you hit it.
Pipe loads. Now I got something to do with my gondolas.
They paint epoxy primer on the ends to slow corrosion.
Good video. Wished that someone would do stuff about the L&N before the mega mergers. Lots of American history involves railroads the people that built them and even the major owners themselves.
I live very far away so it wasn't one that I knew a lot about. Maybe someone reading this can put together a video. I was born in 1970 but didn't start taking pics and videos of trains until after the mergers like you mentioned. Huge regret.
@@djstrains CSX is a mega merger. I will have to review who all is involved. The C comes from the Chessie System (C&O/B&O the first railroad in America, and SCL Seaboard Coast Line. There are many lines included (L&N, Western Maryland, Pete Marqute, GeorgiaRail Road, Clinchfield Railroad just to mention a few). Then there is the PPR and New York Central (Penn Central) which became Conrail after bankruptcy. This is all in CSX. I can’t forget Monon and several others. This is half of the US!

@@djstrains Rail roads were built to carry products such as steel and oil. Oil is far cheaper to transport in pipe lines than on trains. However millions of tons of chemicals are still transported. So if you are modeling then you have to have such places along your tracks. One last thing. One of the list railroads of Indiana is the Monon. It went from Chicago to Louisville. However they came on the scene to late and did own entry to either city. There is a hard cover book on this railroad. Many stories but to short of time to tell them. Indians Railway museum runs an excursion train on a remaining portion of their tracks in Southern Indiana.

Is there any reason why CSX use numbers and not letters like BNSF and UP,,?
NS, CSX, CP and CN use numbers, only BNSF, UP and KCS use letters.
Each series is for a specific type of train. Like CSX 000-099 are high priority Intermodal.
I am now gonna rewatch both parts on how steel is made. Lol
In G scale you could make a steel mill that actually operates and pours a glowing liquid into hot metal cars

From what I can gather from doing the "Google on the Internet Machine" it is primer coat to protect the bare ferrous metal. Beyond that it's a guess why it is. Arsinio (sp?) Hall you to say, "Things that make you go hmmm?"

I follow all the laws. Now that I am licensed, I was able to obtain authorization to fly within 5 mies of the county airport, which allowed me to finally get the shots!
Just make the whole layout a steel mill :-D
30'x2.5' steel mill eventually will be put on my future layout with an around 20'x2.5' yard just for the steel mill.
