@@taniaPBear Yeah Ryan has a way to go with Pronouncing Aussie names.

I had to laugh so hard when he said her name like that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sorry Ryan! lol
A monotreme is an egg laying mammal. There are only five species of monotreme in the world: the platypus, the short beaked echidna, the western long beaked echidna, the eastern long-beaked echidna and the Attenborough's long-beaked echidna. All of them live on the Australian Plate, specifically in Australia and Papua New Guinea, and are found nowhere else in the world. There are three types of mammals: placental mammals, marsupials and monotremes. Australia and Papua New Guinea are the only places to contain all three types of mammal.
And a mammal means it suckles off its mother?...hence the term mammary?
A perfect, well-worded answer thank you. I wouldn’t expect anyone not from here to know what monotremes are (and tbh I would have said that there are two - echidnas and platypuses, not knowing until now that there are more than one species of echidna).
...laughing at the image of an egg laying a mammal. Cheers
Nah the way he said Canberra got me cracking up.
@@neocynical535 The only people who pronounce Canberra like that - are the people who live there!
Laughed how you said Kylie’s last name. She is a famous Aussie singer here n was an actress on neighbours
Kyle Mingoo - one of my favorites 😂
Mingoo?
love it too..she is now Kyle MingOO forever lol
I think he means Kylie Mango
Hi Ryan. Yes Canberra is the capital. And it is pronounced Canbra. I live in Canberra and it is a great place to live, despite some people's opinions...And Kylie Minogue is a very famous Australian singer who is famous all over the world, except America. Pronounced Kylie Min- o-g. Check out famous sights in Canberra such as the Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, High Court, Mint, and Gorgeous Lake Burley Griffen named after the man and his wife who designed Canberra. Check out the stats on Kylie Minogue. She is impressive and still singing today after a long career...
I actually saw her on Seth Meyers show recently, apparently she did have hits in the US too back in the 80's/90's (straight after neighbours, whenever that was)
@@mehere8038 Locomotion was #1 in the US back in the 80s but success has pretty much escaped her in the US since despite international success everywhere else.
@@LawrenceAkers not really surprising, just a different culture there, I can't really imagine her image really working for them, but her image is what made her, so changing that would lose her success elsewhere. I was just surprised to hear she had any hits there. I didn't know what it was with, now you're telling me Locomotion, I don't know if I should be surprised or thinking that makes sense, I really don't know what songs of hers I would have expected to be most likely to succeed there, I'm thinking maybe "can't get you our of my head" for some reason, but no idea why & that was later, so I guess locomotion was also probably something to do with what was happening at that particular point in time too..... hmm I'm thinking now, when was Crocodile Dundee released, cause that would have been somewhere around the same time as Locomotion wouldn't it? I could be off by years, but I wonder if there was also a hunger for Aussie music in the US cause of that movie & she was able to tap into that, I dunno, I'm just ranting, thanks for sharing that info though, I didn't know that stuff, was surprised when she turned up on Seth's show & spoke of hit/s there
Moving back to Canberra next year after years away, really looking forward to riding around Lake Burley Griffin, was always one of my favourite places to spend time.
Looks like Kylie will have a contracted entertainment residency in Vegas starting in 2023
I am from Tasmania and I’m very happy to here you know where it is because so many people don’t even know Tasmania exists.
You did well🙂 A platypus as an invertebrate made me laugh 😁 but that's only because I know what they are. There are only two species of monotremes in the World. Both of them are native to Australia. They are the platypus and the echidna. They are egg laying mammals. 🙂🙂 The plant was Golden Wattle and it is, indeed, the National floral emblem. Kylie MINOGUE ( min-oge) is a World famous singer.
Technically there are two extant (living) families, three genera and five species. One Ornithorhynchus (Platypus), and two genera of Tachyglossidae, the Australian short beaked Tachyglossus species and three long beaked Zaglossus species from New Guinea.... one was "discovered" in 1961 - reclassified and named after Sir David Attenborough.
In the US she only had two hit singles. One in the 80s (Locomotion), and one in the 2000s (Can't Get You Out of My Head). A two time one hit wonder, so to speak 😊
Well, she's famous in the UK and she can't sing. She's famous for being in "Neighbours", an Australian soap, for being pretty, particularly after all that plastic surgery. He concerts sell out, but it isn't for the voice.
Our national floral emblem is the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) , but the photo provided is not that species. The phyllodes of Ac. pynantha are broader.
@@delaneyavenel1492 Thanks. I didn't notice it wasn't actually Golden Wattle. 🙂
8/10 is pretty good.
Most people outside of Australia would never have heard of Monotremes and most people think Sydney is the capital.
Interestingly, it's written into our constitution that the capital may be no closer to Sydney than 100miles. Those Melbourne peeps REALLY didn't want it to be there! ;) Canberra was created to be our capital between Melbourne and Sydney. (closer to Sydney though, SO THERE!)
Yet in the 1850/60s Melbourne was the gold-rush capital of the world and for many years after world-wide businesses had their AUS HQ in Melbourne.
Yes, the Constitution required that it be in NSW and the 100 miles at least from Sydney.
Had to be 200 miles from Melbourne and 100 miles from the sea
@@jonathanmurphy2296 Heading in the right direction. The Constitution s.125 provides that the capital was to be in land ceded by NSW but at least 100 miles (approximately 160 km) from Sydney.
How stupid
platypus being an invertebrate had me dying
I hear they shed their shell every 3 months when they grow XD
Calling Australia Day ‘lamb day’ is like calling July 4 ‘hot dog day’ in the USA.
Sydney and Melbourne were never going to agree to the other being the new capital city, Melbourne eventually agreed that the new capital could be located in NSW as long as it was at least 100 miles from Sydney and Melbourne was the temporary capital until it was built (probably hedging their bets that it never would be).
It’s a great place to live, been here 35 years.
A great place to live? Sure if you like having nothing to do besides circle a roundabout
Melbourne was there for our First National Parliament Sitting until they Built Canberra
The flower is called "wattle" and is the national flower. AA monotreme is a mammal that lays eggs and suckles its young. Australia has the only two monotremes in the world, the platypus and the echidna. Canberra has the emphasis on the first syllable - CAN-bruh is the pronunciation.

You should absolutely check out Kylie Minogue now, Ryan. She is one of Australia's most successful musical exports and pretty much has had a hugely successful career everywhere in the world except the US. She played Glastonbury (massive UK festival) a couple of years back in the 'legends' slot and it was one of the highest attended performances they've ever had. She has been successfully making pop music since the late 80s and still going today (in fact, due to release a new album in a few months). The best way to describe her is pretty much Australia's answer to Madonna in terms of sound, demographic and ability to reinvent.

She's also been honoured by three governments: Australia, Britain, and France - a rare trifecta.

One of the best facts about Canberra is that it doesn't take long to drive to a more interesting city.
Born and bred in Canberra, most foreigners don't realise Canberra is our capital. Just so you know, Canberra is pronounced "Can-bra" in Australia. I had a good laugh when you chose Melbourne.

You did really well. When you come here you should smell the golden wattle. It's my favourite scent and is usually blooming around September. It's spectacular to see in person along with the Jacaranda tree and the Flame tree.
Monotremes- egg laying mammals. Only 2 echidna and platypus.
Canberra is in the ACT. Australian Capital Territory. They couldn't decide on Sydney or Melbourne - so they created a new city and Territory roughly halfway between the two, to install the galahs.
As an Australian you saying 'can-Berra' instead of can-bruh just made me facepalm
You did way better than I expected good job ❤
(I also thought platypuses were an invertebrate idk what a monotreme is)
A monotreme is a mammal that lays eggs. An invertebrate is a creature that doesn't have a spine/backbone. Snail, jellyfish, mosquito etc.
I'll probably be repeating a thousand comments, but Canberra is pronounced similar to saying "can brah" somewhat fast. Canbrah. And yes. Monotremes are unique to Australia. One is the Platypus, and freakily, Echidnas are the only other monotreme.
You got more than most Australians would have, so congratulations.
The capital of Australia is Canberra in the ACT. When Australia became a federation Melbourne and Sydney couldn’t decide where to put the capital city so the made a new territory between the two.
Even when it was decided to put the capital somewhere in the middle, the town of Yass (aboriginal for "running water") was also one of the sites officially proposed for the Federal Capital.
The agreement was that the new capital was to be in territory granted by NSW and at least 100 miles from Sydney. NSW also granted land at Jervis Bay to give the new capital a sea port.
@@doubledee9675 Bateman's Bay also becomes the defacto capital over Christmas, New Year's and summer holidays when half the population of cashed-up public servants take up residence there.
Melbourne was the capital city after Federation before Canberra was built. Canberra was chosen to be the capital city to stop the bitch fighting between Sydney and Melbourne wanting to be the capital.
@@optimusmaximus9646 Had not realised that large numbers went to Bateman's Bay, rather than further south (Merimbula, Tathra etc). Perhaps NSW should charge a road usage fee on them as they pay no NSW taxes!
A monotreme is a mammal that lays eggs. Now only the platypus & echidna.

Happy New Year to you and your lovely family.
Because of rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne they drew a straight line between the 2 cities went half way and created our capitol Canberra in the Australian Capitol Territory
Not totally right. The agreement about the location of the capital city of the new nation was embodied in the Constitution s.125:
The seat of Government of the Commonwealth shall be determined by the Parliament, and shall be within territory which shall have been granted to or acquired by the Commonwealth, and shall be vested in and belong to the Commonwealth, and shall be in the State of New South Wales, and be distant not less than one hundred miles from Sydney.
Such territory shall contain an area of not less than one hundred square miles, and such portion thereof as shall consist of Crown lands shall be granted to the Commonwealth without any payment therefor.
The Parliament shall sit at Melbourne until it meet at the seat of Government.

Are you ready for this Ryan! Well done! 8/10 is good
The three mascots of the Sydney Olympics in 2000 were a kookaburra, a platypus, and an echidna. What do they have in common? They all lay eggs! Echidnas and platypuses are monotremes. Most seven-year old Australians would be able to tell you that. They are unique to this part of the world - and featured on the 5-cent and 20-cent coins.

"How is it Canberra?" well Sydney & Melbourne fought over who should be the capital, so the resolution was to create a new city half way between the 2, (in a sheep paddock) & make that the capital

The way you said Canberra killed me
I am a little shocked - I mean I love your content and style, but as someone who lives in Canberra (and not realising you had watched over 100 videos on Australia), I am surprised that the national capital had not come up before. Monotremes (there are only two in the world, I think) are egg-laying mammals and Australia has both.
There are only two species in the family monotreme, the duck billed platypus and the echidna. Both are only found in Australia, hence it being a question about Australian things. Monotremes are mammals that lay eggs.
Kyle Mingoo 😂😂
Well done, 8/10 is still pretty good! 😎
Yes you absolutely need to do a video about Canberra (kan-bra not kan-berr-a) and about the American Architect who designed the city and his amazing wife who did most of the actual work that won the design competition
Ryan don't worry about not knowing Canberra, most Australians wish they could forget it, but it is like the politicians that are there, it sends you round and round in ever decreasing circles until you get nowhere.
Canberra is fine when the politicians are out of town

Canberra is in the Australian Capital Territory. I think you saw that in a previous video on the geography of the country.
You’ve also seen a platypus on a video before but you might have to find a video on platypuses and echidnas.
Canberra, like Washington DC is a planned and purpose built capital city. It was designed by an American after a public competition. Construction started in the 1920's but most development has taken place since the 1960's. Population approaching half a million in city and surrounds.
Kyle mingoo made me bloody loose it hahaha

Well done Ryan! ☀️ Canberra in Australian Capital Territory, is our political base and halfway between Sydney and Melbourne! 🤓 The platypus is also a mammal! 🧐👍
The flower is a Wattle tree
When you talked about Kyle Mingoo, I laughed so hard I peed.
I would argue that Australia has no real 'National Dish'. The whole Lamb thing was a marketing tactic to raise the profile of sheep meat. In the early 90s, I could buy an entire side of lamb, butchered and bagged for 90 cents a kilo on special. The normal price was about $1.99. From a suburban butcher, not a farmer. Then bloody Tom Cruise came along and fucked it up or all of us!
I vote for fish and chips. We're a predominantly coastal bunch, so yeah. I like lamb though.
Well done Ryan from Sydney
All Australians know about monotremes (mammals who lay eggs). I think the only known monotremes are the platypus and echidnas. They also suckle their young. So they have milk and eggs so can make their own custard. :) (Aussie joke)
Very well done 🎉😊
Hi, while I think of it. Kangaroo's don't box the way you think, the big Red's and Grey's stand six feet tall and are powerfully built, they're intimidating to look at and their modus operandi when fighting is to lean back on their big tail's and use their extremely strong hind legs and long claws (5 inch plus) to disembowel an enemy. Also they can lure opponents into deep water (dog's and dingoes) and using all four limbs can drown and disembowel. Nothing quaint about big Reds, look them up.
Canberra was chosen as the capital of Australia, as it is halfway between Melb and Syd, and they are the two major cities here
In my opinion the golden wattle is the most poisonous plant (totally not just because I'm allergic) 😅
It used to be Melbourne until 1927 when the new Parliament was opened in Canberra. The city was actually designed by an American. Monotremes are found only in Australia - the platypus and the echidna.
As an Australian I got 8/10, had no idea what a monotreme was but i knew the platypus was a mammal & i had no idea what that national dish
I also didn't know we had a national dish 😂 I think most people eat fish and chips more than roast lamb to be fair, but it's too British to claim
It's reasonable you didn't know it was a monotreme, there are only 2 monotremes on earth and both are Australian animals (platypus and echidna) basically it's a mammal (warm blooded animal) that lays eggs which is what makes them unusual, you probably wouldn't learn about that in the USA because it's not expected you'd ever come across one.
Americans are getting better. It's a big world out there which it is impossible to see it all but you keep going. Just realise that the more you know - the more you know that you don't know.
Kyle Mingoo 😂
Monotremes are egg laying mammals, after extinctions from species in the Jurassic and Cretaceous period the only 2 are left now is the echidna and platypus
In terms of america the capitol question options are like Washington dc, new york. LA, texas (victoria is a state)
Australian Capital Territory( state Canberra is lactated in, was made because it’s directly between Melbourne and Sydney, they couldn’t decide whether sudney or Melbourne should be , so they put it between the two cites
Okay good video. Sooo you need to look up Canberra and why it’s the capital. You need to look up Golden Wattle, Kylie Minogue (our Madonna who made it big in Australia and Europe, you will know her song “Can’t get you out of my head”), have you reacted to the lamb ads? They’re hilarious.
It's pronounced Can-Bra! Love your content Ryan, keep it up!

I grew up in Canberra... (pronounced can/bruh) lol... fun fact for you: the REASON Canberra is the capital is because Sydney and Melbourne were arguing over the position, so they found a sheep paddock and repurposed it, building a new city there. The official explanation at Canberra's naming ceremony on 12 March 1913, was that the name Canberra was taken from the language of the first nations people whose land Canberra was built upon and translates in English to mean, meeting place.
I read that it means "the valley between the two mountains"' so some people think it was named after cleavage or breast - hence the meme with a picture of Parliament House : Canberra, named after boobs, full of boobs.
