Worked at a GameStop for a month. For the most part I personally had quit a bit of fun working with the general public and recommending my favorites but what killed it was the corporate quotas. Heres the reality GameStop needs to realize. A single mother that’s coming to buy something for her kids birth day present is not going to buy a $25 loyalty program. The people that would want a loyalty program are either already part of it or they get their physical games online… or they just buy digital. Someone coming in to buy a new game is not wanting to buy pre owned, nor do they want to buy a pop vinyl.
Gamestop has now closed in my country Sweden, of which I will miss their Midnight launch events which in my opinion were their best attribute. Then these midnight launch events gave a feeling of being part of a gaming community.
I'm one of the lucky ones. The GameStop nearest to me had a very chill manager, and the employees never charged me with hidden extended warranty fees. They did try to goad me to preordering certain games. Which was always annoying.
I work for it’s equivalent in South Africa and literally it’s the exact same toxic environment and management and glad to say their average store closing is about 3 to 4 a year. It all goes down to employee morale and that translates to the customer service.. and customers see how bad it is for the employees so they buy their products online mostly just to spite the company. Literally no commission, no paid sick leave, racist hiring policies and you have no choice BUT to work there .. otherwise you starve
I lost all faith and hope within GameStop being screwed as a paying customer into tueor pro subscription and somehow they refuse to let me use my discount on gift cards anymore. I won't renew my pro subscription anymore and end of GameStop is coming
Gamestop sucks. I remember buying Guitar Hero 3 there years ago. The guitar controller stopped working after a week, and their 1 week return policy prohibited me from getting a refund or exchange. I'll never buy anything there again.
Hey there. AkewsticRockR here. GameStop has no path to redemption. This is a great essay but it's about 20 years too late. Anything about them is more like a dirge at this point. Hope you're doing well Chris. I'm now an overweight married dad who doubles as an IT Admin. I frequently miss the creative outlet UA-cam was for me but I see why political videos and culture commentary have taken over when I remember how much of a pain in the ass editing was. Not to mention the extra work of getting my own gameplay videos.
Whoa hey Kyle, it has been forever! I suppose I was a little optimistic in parts here. Major congrats on the life successes though. Yeah, with editing I'm not entirely sure how a newer person is supposed to keep up with the rat race out putting out professional looking videos on a frequent basis to compete against people that just hire a staff. It makes this new style of just putting out Livestream clips look more and more alluring. At least with multiple external multi-TB hard drives, storing all the footage has been a lot easier. If you do ever decide to give it a go, I'll be sure to watch your stuff since I always really enjoyed it.
Lol so u crapped on the manager of the store? As if the manager of the local GameStop is the problem? It’s the executives forcing them to do this. If the store doesn’t hit their numbers, the manager gets fired
Ummm, gamestop was net positive last time i checked and out of debt. Seens this platform has it out for them. Well when it finally does come out, ill come back and laugh at you broke fools.

They should be sued into oblivion for all the illegal warranty charges.

Yeah, I totally agree on that. There used to be more midnight events with people hanging out and having fun but it seems like that has gone away.
I had a similar experience working for Fry's Electronics. Sales tactics are the reason I only shop online anymore unless I have to go to a store.
RIP Frys

Camelot331 tells it all.
It’s miserable to work there. Goals r 25% pro, 8 on preorder, 35 on game warranty, 35 on hardware warranty, and 15 on attach

But what about their in game NFT / in game market that they are planning? Couldn’t that save them?

Now is just a toy store. I rather buy my games online.
We are witnessing sub par intelligence within a sub par video with sub par views. This video was as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. GME is KING!
