- The First Memorial Lecture delivered in honor of Datuk Seri Gopal Seri Ram highlighted various aspects of his life and career as a prominent lawyer and judge. The speech covered his character, work ethic, and influence on the legal profession in Malaysia. Here are the key points summarized:
Character
Datuk Seri Gopal Seri Ram was known for his focused and industrious nature. He came to work every day at 6.00 a.m., and his library was a testament to his dedication to legal research.
Career as a Counsel
One of the early cases that made his career was his representation of Dr. Dutt, a radiologist at Assunta Hospital, before the Federal Court. He successfully argued for an interpretation of the Industrial Relations Act to protect Dr. Dutt's rights.
Courtroom Presence
As a counsel in court, Ram was at his best. He was courteous and had a remarkable ability to recall legal points and cases without making notes.
Influence on the Law
As a judge, Ram played a crucial role in developing constitutional law in Malaysia. He emphasized a "prismatic" approach to interpretation, which gave life to abstract concepts in the Constitution and led to the liberal interpretation of constitutional rights.
Notable Cases
Ram's judgments in cases like Tan Tek Seng and Sagong Tasi showcased his defense of constitutional rights and his commitment to protecting the weak against the strong.
Controversies
While Ram's brilliance was undisputed, he was also a controversial figure due to some of his judgments and statements. However, his impact on the legal profession remained significant.
Courage and Sacrifice
Even after retirement, Ram continued to take on powerful political individuals and was involved in high-level prosecutions. Despite his health issues, he never turned away those seeking his help.
Comparison to Other Legal Luminaries
The speech left it to the audience to decide if Ram could be compared to esteemed figures like Lord Atkin, Thomas Jefferson, Nani Palkhivala, or Lord Denning.
Legacy
Datuk Seri Gopal Seri Ram's contributions and influence on the law, along with his personal traits, left a lasting impact on the Malaysian judiciary and the legal profession.
In conclusion, the First Memorial Lecture paid tribute to Datuk Seri Gopal Seri Ram's remarkable life and his significant contributions to the legal field, while acknowledging both his brilliance and the controversies surrounding him. His legacy continues to inspire and influence the legal community in Malaysia.

This is true! There were and are many legends at the Bench and the Bar. We should speak of them: Raaj Aziz, George Seah. The Supreme Court judges who were tribunalised. Some outstanding academicians. Of some I have spoken. I hope to get the chance to speak of others
