I HAD to look this up now, apparently its only called Canadian because it was first imported to New York from Toronto and the name stuck. Its secondarily known as Back Bacon.
Hawiian Pizza is actually Canadian. It was developed by a Canadian Pizzeria and it's called Hawaiian because that was the name of the brand of pineapple they used.
May I also add that Hawaiian pizza was also inspired because of the sweet and sour Chinese dish. Hawaiian pizza, made with Canadian bacon, and inspired by Chinese food, from Canada. 😂
Also what I find interesting is that it's always been the 3 of them online for the past few weeks. Gem had mentioned it in the same stream before meeting Impulse. Truly this group was meant to be and dare I say, this is the best group formed this season.
From google: Canadian Bacon is called that apparently because the style of bacon does originate from Canada, but there its just referred to as "Back Bacon" On a kind of similar note though, theres this pie we have here called a Japanese Fruit Pie which is pretty good, but the pie isn't Japanese nor does it have anything to do with Japan. the southerners in America thought Coconut was exotic and Japanese was exotic so they just called it that
I (American) was at a breakfast restaurant in Toronto with my friend (Canadian) and saw "pea meal" on the menu as something you could get in an omelet. I asked her what it was and she described it as a round slice of ham, though it wasn't exactly that. Curious, I ordered it in my omelet, and when it came I discovered it was Canadian bacon. I told her that and she reacted much the same way Gem did. "Why is it called CANADIAN bacon?!" So, this definitely made me laugh, as I've had much the same conversation.
So here is the UK terminology - Canadian bacon is what we call back bacon. American bacon is what we call streaky bacon. In the UK back bacon is just referred to as bacon because its our most commonly used type.
Canadian bacon" or "Canadian-style bacon" is the term commonly used in the United States for a form of back bacon that is cured, smoked and fully cooked, trimmed into cylindrical medallions, and sliced thick. Ontarian Here, Canadian Bacon afaik is Back Bacon but we also have whats called "Peameal Bacon" which is back bacon crusted with Corn Meal, and that is what is used on Eggs Benedict, at least in Ontario.
As a canadian who works in a local pizza place, i have this kind of discussion all the time, sometimes to the point where i have to go grab a handful of each to be like 'which one do you want?' And too my surprise its pretty close to 50/50
I’m Canadian and the first time I heard of Canadian Bacon was when I was on a trip in the Caribbean. The family I was staying with bought it for me and I was so confused as to why it was called Canadian bacon 😂
I have to say, as a Brit I've never encountered bacon outside of the UK that is actually anything like "proper" (re: the stuff I grew up with) bacon. We have both back and streaky bacon over here, and it is dry-cured and usually smoked. I just came back from a trip to the Netherlands, and their bacon was more like parma ham. Didn't really do the job.

A Danish doesn’t come from Denmark we just introduced it to America. We called it weinerbrød because a strike forced Danish bakers to hire outside work from Austria and the teached us their traditional recipes. Of course since it got very popular we evolved it so it’s not identical to the old Austrian pastries anymore
In Vancouver, you just ask for ham on your pizza. I learned that when our band was in the Vancouver parade. They were very confused. Apparently, that cut of ham was first imported from Toronto to the US so why it's referred to as Canadian bacon. The slices aren't circular as they are in the US today though.

Idk about other countries but in Australia the streaky fatty bit Americans call bacon we usually throw in the bin, and the round bit yall call canadian bacon is generally called bacon
What Impulse calls canadian bacon here we call "short-cut bacon" in australia or most of the time just "bacon". We call american bacon "streaky bacon" or "American bacon"
There are also cases where they "localize" the food to make it sound fancier. In Brazil there is a dessert called "German Pie"or "Netherland Pie" that has absolutely NOTHING to do with Germany, OR the Netherlands. It was invented in the state of Minas Gerais form what I remember. I think the craziest case of "localized" food I know are the French fries. who are not french at all. If memory serves, the french calls them something involving German, and the German call them something involving the U.S.A. The poor food is not sure of its nationality to this day.
Apparently it's called Canadian because Americans called it that when it was imported to NYC from Toronto. I couldn't find a mention of whether this was the first time it got publicity in the US but I have to assume it is because all other options make no sense
Impulse Impulse, Impulse. I can forgive the Canadian Bacon confusion (because I was too growing up in Western Canada), but thinking that Wisconson State is anywhere near Newfoundland?! I remember being in Canada once when I was very young, we had to go to get on a cruise iirc, anyway I think I asked some tour-bus driver if they had Canadian bacon, I was that kid who would talk to every stranger I saw 🙄🤦♂️
Now I want some Hawaiian pizza. Also Canadian bacon is sold in Newfoundland. At least it was for many years, I'm not a fan of most pork related foods myself.
Canadian Bacon also known as Peameal bacon. Peameal bacon is a wet-cured, unsmoked back bacon made from trimmed lean boneless pork loin rolled in cornmeal.
OK the best way I can personally describe Canadian bacon. Is it tastes like a mix between ham and bacon, but it looks more like ham. Personally, that’s what the brand or whatever me and my family get. But that’s the best way I can describe it Gem.
Had to Google it... in Germany, we just call it Kochschinken, because it's cooked/baked ham (Schinken). Btw we just use the english word for bacon... the German word us just too long :D

So its what we Cannucks call back bacon or peameal bacon. If you're ever in the UK what we call out regular bacon they call streaky bacon. At least with streaky bacon you get a visual of what you are gonna get.
Ok, I'm now changing the name. A Hawaiian pizza must now be SPAM and pineapple. A Canadian Pizza will have back bacon and Lunenburg Pudding. The Hawaiian pizza as we know it now with pineapple and "Canadian Bacon" will be called the Clusterf**k.
As a Canadian living in the US I can tell my fellow Canucks that "Canadian Bacon" is just back bacon, as in the slice of ham on an Egg McMuffin. There's nothing Canadian about it.
As a Canadian who've lived on both coasts, and in the middle, and have been to the far north.. I've NEVER heard anyone call anything Canadian Bacon. Its strange.. only my American friends use that term.
