Great questions Drew! We custom made the CLT panels to include the interior paneling as a part of the structure itself. Exhalation can be added if needed for some cold climates. But our HUUM stove take care of the heat for most installs. 🔥🙌🏼☺️

Been looking for WiFi set up forever!... had a Harvia with the old manual timer... all coming together now with getting StarLink at the cottage this year where no internet service worked before so we'll be able to turn on the sauna 1/2 way there and have it warmed up for when we arrive! Hey Ryan, not just any glue will due! Especially in sauna. High temps need to always be tested for any products that go into sauna. We have worked with CLT companies who have use specifically high temp glues that will not off gas’s into the sauna. Great question. Keep them coming!

As with what happens to many cultural words, expressions, artifacts they get changed a bit when they come over into a new culture. We tend to pronounce the word like our Finnish ancestors who brought this specific expression of Nordic culture to North America - the sauna. Finnish pronunciation: Sauna = SOW-na This is pronunciation is still common in areas where Finnish immigrants settled throughout the USA. However you pronounce the word, we hope you enjoy the real, authentic, and stress destroying expression of sauna!
Hey David, Good questions it's a different process in thinking about heat all together. R values trap the heat in the room. This is what happens with many traditional insulations. Traditional log and timberframe (and CLT) saunas capture the heat and then radiate it back into the room. Foam is tricky as you want to be very carful you are using a foam product that does not off gas into the room. Stay warm! :-)

Question about the CLT. It seems to be devoid of any vapour barrier. Is it suited for use in saunas when they produce such high humidity? Also strange to see the interior lining laid directly onto the structure with no air gap. T&G boards would suffer a bit with all that humidity. Could you offer some explanation as to why these wouldn't be concerns

We use both depending on the application, tempered glass is always a must in the sauna and be sure all seals are temperature-rated. Never never never use vinyl - unless you want melty sauna windows.

Great question, there are many forms of Mass Timber products - walls, beams, etc. Some are mechanically connected such as NLT (Nail Laminated Timber), and sometimes they even use wooden nails. Our CLT is laminated with pressure and high strength glues. This creates the structural strength needed for large and small projects.

There are a number of woods used traditionally for sauna. The most "traditional" is wood that can be sourced locally from the land that is suitable for sauna. If you live in North America, Cedar is very common and grows naturally in many areas. If you live in the Nordic countries you may see more spruce. The ingredients for good sauna have often been timber from the land, rocks from the soil, and freshwater from near by. Now to specifically compare alder and cedar. Cedar is often chosen as it had an enjoyable aromatics. But one main factor to look for in sauna wood are wood that is less dense/soft wood so that it doesn't heat up too much when you sit on it. Great question!

Really good-looking and beautiful interior in the sauna. One thing worries me a bit: is the ventilation sufficient? The sauna should be rich in oxygen and the sauna should be refreshing. If the air doesn't change properly, you won't be able to be in sauna for a long time and sauna will only make you tired. The same problem seems to exist in all saunas whose construction I have watched on UA-cam. Finnish saunas often have the same problem, even though saunas have been used here for a few thousand years. It is quite easy and also inexpensive to improve the ventilation. I've built a few saunas and it's hard to find instructions for proper ventilation. You just have to try it yourself. Evaluation is difficult if it is not possible to visit saunas where the ventilation actually works.
First let me say you guys do beautiful work but the interior cedar has a lot of knots on the areas where people are going to be sitting. Won’t that burn the people sitting on them?
Hey Tom! Great question. Love that you are thinking about the nuances. There are a couple of factors at play here: 1. Soft woods are great for sauna interiors. We love Cedar for its fragrance, color, and softness in the sauna. Hardwoods are less often used as they tend to retain too much heat and might be less comfy to sit on. 2. We care about where all our woods come from. There is an environmental impact to sourcing healthy woods that are great for sauna. The sourcing of clear cedar is unfortunately using old growth wood. Thus, cutting larger healthier old grow trees where the wood in the center is free from knots. Vs. readily available farmed cedar that can be quickly grown and harvested. So, our environmental commitments lead our wood choice for our interiors. 2. Now, what does that mean for comfortability. We host thousands of people each year in our public saunas. And our custom saunas are sent all over North America to clients. And we haven’t heard of any toasted buns yet. ☺️ We think that the conversation around knot free interiors is mostly driven by a desire to upsell customers in lower quality saunas. Proper sauna design should always be mold-resistant if constructed correctly. High heat, good ventilation, and ensuring water drains appropriately all create beautiful, fresh, and mold free saunas!

Good question. Sauna is about breathing deeply and good ventilation. The materials used in the sauna should then be natural. We have tested and checked with all our manufacturers for temperature tolerances for CLT panels that we use. CLT checks out great in most cases, but we cannot comment on every panel producers glues. Related, off gassing is the same reason we do not use spray foam for insulation in our saunas which has a tendency to off gas at such high temps.

Hey there, great question. Clean saunas are the best ones. Nobody deserves a dank musty sauna often found in the gym. For us making sure all floor structures properly drain is the first step in good water management. For cleaning, saunas need minimal regular cleaning for general upkeep - much less than the regular maintenance for hot tubs for example. Wiping benches and making sure you exhaust the moist air are common first steps.
@@msfa2004 most of the time yes, our sauna that also have dressing rooms come with mechanical ventilation that helps exhaust air when done. This also depends upon climate and time of year. In cold climates there is more potential for condensation as warm humid sauna air contacts cold air or surfaces.
Great question! All our saunas are custom designed, built, and installed on site by our team. Lots of variables to consider when pricing for people all over North America. Some people need a real big sauna space the size of a tiny home. 🔥👀 Others something more modest for the backyard. Most family’s invest with us like you would in a vehicle. Then it just depends on if you wanna drive the Lexus or the Toyota. 😄

Have you checked glues used in CTLs you are using? Abstract The aim of this thesis was to study if CLT could be used in cold outbuildings or saunas. The thesis was made for Hirsiveisto Laasonen’s Olotar collection. The thesis introduces CLT as a material, different possibilities for glues in it, and building physics. An Excel file was made for this thesis work that can be used for calculating the strength of these kinds of buildings. The calculations are based on Eurocodes. At the end, there are also construction drawings of one example building. In the building physics section CLT’s temperature and humidity behavior was studied. The behavior was studied with WUFI-program and with small experimental test in a climatic test chamber.

Hey Brian, glad you are digging in here. You are right on with your assessment of r-value. If that was your home heating r-value you would need more as code expects. And traditional sauna is a much different building science that a traditional stick framed home. Sauna is not a continually headed space. With even regular sauna usage the loss is not nearly as significant. And CLT provides much more thermal mass for heat retention than that of the more common Barrel Sauna that is usually 5 quarter material resulting in about ~1 r. Stay warm! 🙂

What are the dimensions of this sauna build?
Is the CLT wood compacted through high pressure or bolts ?
Great question, there are many forms of Mass Timber products - walls, beams, etc. Some are mechanically connected such as NLT (Nail Laminated Timber), and sometimes they even use wooden nails. Our CLT is laminated with pressure and high strength glues. This creates the structural strength needed for large and small projects.
How do you handle the flooring and drain? Do you slope to a drain or let it evap through the air

How does cedar interior paneling compare to alder that is used in traditional saunas?
There are a number of woods used traditionally for sauna. The most "traditional" is wood that can be sourced locally from the land that is suitable for sauna.
If you live in North America, Cedar is very common and grows naturally in many areas. If you live in the Nordic countries you may see more spruce. The ingredients for good sauna have often been timber from the land, rocks from the soil, and freshwater from near by.
Now to specifically compare alder and cedar. Cedar is often chosen as it had an enjoyable aromatics. But one main factor to look for in sauna wood are wood that is less dense/soft wood so that it doesn't heat up too much when you sit on it.

@@CedarandStoneSauna Yes I'm from a Nordic country and grey alder has been used here forever because it doesn't get too hot and has no resin (like spruce). Never been to a cedar sauna hence my question.

Really good-looking and beautiful interior in the sauna. One thing worries me a bit: is the ventilation sufficient? The sauna should be rich in oxygen and the sauna should be refreshing. If the air doesn't change properly, you won't be able to be in sauna for a long time and sauna will only make you tired. The same problem seems to exist in all saunas whose construction I have watched on UA-cam. Finnish saunas often have the same problem, even though saunas have been used here for a few thousand years. It is quite easy and also inexpensive to improve the ventilation. I've built a few saunas and it's hard to find instructions for proper ventilation. You just have to try it yourself. Evaluation is difficult if it is not possible to visit saunas where the ventilation actually works.
No off gassing from those glues used in the CLT panels?
Yes always go natural wood. Engineered wood off gases toxins
First let me say you guys do beautiful work but the interior cedar has a lot of knots on the areas where people are going to be sitting. Won’t that burn the people sitting on them?
Hey Tom! Great question. Love that you are thinking about the nuances. There are a couple of factors at play here:
1. Soft woods are great for sauna interiors. We love Cedar for its fragrance, color, and softness in the sauna. Hardwoods are less often used as they tend to retain too much heat and might be less comfy to sit on.
2. We care about where all our woods come from. There is an environmental impact to sourcing healthy woods that are great for sauna. The sourcing of clear cedar is unfortunately using old growth wood. Thus, cutting larger healthier old grow trees where the wood in the center is free from knots. Vs. readily available farmed cedar that can be quickly grown and harvested.
So, our environmental commitments lead our wood choice for our interiors.
2. Now, what does that mean for comfortability. We host thousands of people each year in our public saunas. And our custom saunas are sent all over North America to clients. And we haven’t heard of any toasted buns yet. ☺️ We think that the conversation around knot free interiors is mostly driven by a desire to upsell customers in lower quality saunas. Knots do warm up more than clear soft wood, but they don’t burn. Many enjoy the sauna with bench covers or towels as well.

Is there a way to build it to account for mold?
Proper sauna design should always be mold-resistant if constructed correctly. High heat, good ventilation, and ensuring water drains appropriately all create beautiful, fresh, and mold free saunas!

Are the CLT panels held together with glue? If so, at 100 Celsius are they at risk of offgasing?
Good question. Sauna is about breathing deeply and good ventilation.
The materials used in the sauna should then be natural. We have tested and checked with all our manufacturers for temperature tolerances for CLT panels that we use. CLT checks out great in most cases, but we cannot comment on every panel producers glues.
Related, off gassing is the same reason we do not use spray foam for insulation in our saunas which has a tendency to off gas at such high temps.

how do you keep the sauna dry and clean after using it?
Hey there, great question. Clean saunas are the best ones. Nobody deserves a dank musty sauna often found in the gym. For us making sure all floor structures properly drain is the first step in good water management. For cleaning, saunas need minimal regular cleaning for general upkeep - much less than the regular maintenance for hot tubs for example. Wiping benches and making sure you exhaust the moist air are common first steps.
So just opening the door after use and wiping the seats and floor will be enough?@@CedarandStoneSauna
@@msfa2004 most of the time yes, our sauna that also have dressing rooms come with mechanical ventilation that helps exhaust air when done. This also depends upon climate and time of year. In cold climates there is more potential for condensation as warm humid sauna air contacts cold air or surfaces.

Great question! All our saunas are custom designed, built, and installed on site by our team. Lots of variables to consider when pricing for people all over North America. Some people need a real big sauna space the size of a tiny home. 🔥👀
Others something more modest for the backyard. Most family’s invest with us like you would in a vehicle. Then it just depends on if you wanna drive the Lexus or the Toyota. 😄

It is very dangerous to use river rocks in sauna, as they tend to be porous, and can explode when you pour water on them.
You are accurate on that. We always suggest proper sauna stones. Rock shards are never fun🪨🪨🪨
River rocks are several different types of stone, some of them can withstand the heat snd cooling. Huum knows what stones to use though

Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to study if CLT could be used in cold outbuildings or saunas.
The thesis was made for Hirsiveisto Laasonen’s Olotar collection.
The thesis introduces CLT as a material, different possibilities for glues in it, and building
physics. An Excel file was made for this thesis work that can be used for calculating the
strength of these kinds of buildings. The calculations are based on Eurocodes. At the
end, there are also construction drawings of one example building.
In the building physics section CLT’s temperature and humidity behavior was studied.
The behavior was studied with WUFI-program and with small experimental test in a climatic test chamber.
Great question. We sure have. In fact, we have worked with a locally based adhesive company to create specially formulated and tested glue solutions that will hold up to the harsh environments of the sauna. 🤜🏼🤛🏼

you're forgetting to tell people about thermal bridging. Soft wood CLT has a very low r-value and will transfer heat quickly to the outside causing high electric usage. Your structure has an r-value under 5, which is 4x lower than code.
Hey Brian, glad you are digging in here. You are right on with your assessment of r-value. If that was your home heating r-value you would need more as code expects. And traditional sauna is a much different building science that a traditional stick framed home. Sauna is not a continually headed space. With even regular sauna usage the loss is not nearly as significant. And CLT provides much more thermal mass for heat retention than that of the more common Barrel Sauna that is usually 5 quarter material resulting in about ~1 r. Stay warm! 🙂

Hey Jeffrey, thanks for the question, we have done extensive testing on the proper adhesives, as well as how they perform during continuous high heat cycles. The thermal mass of the sauna with thick wood walls creates a smooth and even heat throughout the sauna.

We often pronounce sauna in a more Finnish pronunciation (SOW-na) vs. the common English (SAW-na).
