I've seen Alvin 4 times...three times with Ten Years After and once with Ten Years Later. He always gave you your money's worth. Alvin equals...R&R - Blues.
Alvin was an early hero of mine in the late 60s. His speedy repetitive licks hooked me right away. Then in the 80s my popular local rock band got to open for him with his 10 years later band. Naturally alout of interplay between us occured. As well as a few guitar lessons from him..THERES NOTHING MORE POWERFUL THAN LEARNING FROM THE PERSON WHO CREATED IT. And my life allowed me to experience it ewwith allot of my hero's. And as we were about to end our association after the time together we had a little snort snort for the road and he slappooped one of my bands stickers on his tour bus for posterity sake and away we went on our ways. Then when he died, I was shocked yet understood that when we were together, I was able to tell him how important he was to me younger. self.And he really was cool with it all ...And so am I...See ya up there Alvin...

What I found superbly amazing was when he grabbed the mike stand and began to use it for a slide. The ease and the feeling with which he played was like no other I had seen before or since. I was turned on to both Alvin Lee and Rory Gallagher that year. I haven't been the same since ;-)

There was really nothing "pop" about Ten Years After. They also played a concert/music festival called Woodstock. You might have heard of it. They shared the stage with a guy named Hendrix. Canned Heat, Mountain (Leslie West), Johnny Winter and many others. Alvin Lee & Ten Years After one of the hottest bands of that time. Good lesson Griff, thanks. Nice to see Alvin Lee get some due.
That nearly stopped me from watching this lesson from the beginning. The arrogance of some people is just appalling. I've certainly never heard of another "pop" song with a guitar solo like the one in the classic 'I'd Love to Change the World!"
Alvin Lee’s Pure Blues is one of my all time favorite albums. Bluest Blues is the best track on the album. As I understand it, George Harrison played on that track. I have been scouring UA-cam for any kind of coverage of this man’s work. It’s amazing how little there is. Please don’t stop here. Slow Blues In C is another track I wish you would look at. Thanks for getting me started.

Not only was this a great lesson, but I learned an awesome song I had never heard before. I knew that minor scale and have used it ( only in that 1st position) and it always sounded good, but what you did with it just blew my mind...LOL. I have some work to do.

This is the best lesson I have ever run in to. I have fished for that sound trying not to look for the answer. I have checked all the minor modes an couldn't get the sound. This is my first intro to this harmonic minor. An I looking forward to the challenge. Just a great lesson thanks!
Don't know how much Alvin you listened to, but I highly recommend you UA-cam it to the live vid of 10YA @ Woodstock and their rendition of "I'm Goin' Home". Alvin's intro-lead is nearly speed of light for 12 bars or so, this before the word shredding had become part of the common vernacular.

Yep, Woodstock was his beginning on the road to glory.. And Kmuggle, he was known as the fastest guitar in the west... I never saw him live, but became familiar with him, and Ten Years After during being stationed in Germany in the early to mid 70's..
4 years ago and I just find this lesson . great teacher . you offer some real good insights on this tune and music theory in general . before that other pop stuff , Alvin at his best was probably the stonehenge & undead albums "goin home" at woodstock was what propelled the band to stardom
His version of Goin' Down at Woodstock was my introduction to Mr. Lee. Definitely demonstrated a need for speed. His brother, Albert, is a pretty decent guitar, too.

George Harrison Played the solo for this song. What a great song. Alvin was the original Rock Shredder before shredding got sloppy. Every note was perfect and he could play really fast. RIP Alvin Lee
George Harrison could not play the solo to that song not good anyway Clapton did most of the solo work on guitar gently weeps because Harrison couldn't master that himself.

There's nothing I hate more than the sound of my own voice. It's a lesson, not a concert. Do your own if you're perfect and so sure everyone thinks like you do.

I was in the past the soundman for a band, often they played this song especially for me. I still miss the band.

Saw him play that at The Fillmore West ... decades ago. He was one of the fastest players around back then and he didn't use any tricks to do it.

Alvin Lee and Gary Moore both died in Estepona Spain a couple years apart.. must be the water
