    Fun to have this breakdown for in fact a family of 4! Good job!. Concerning listeners not subscriber's maybe explain this to those who watch on tv ! At first I didn't know to press enter and go side to side so maybe explain in former words because over 69k viewers not subscriber's that's a lot! Good luck 😊 p.s. usually I don't suggest so please no offense.😢

      Thanks for the comment and thank you for the tip! It is harder on TV and we weren’t considering that! Will make a note of it in the future. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the expense breakdown. The self insurance cost if any and the liability insurance, if any. You own your yacht outright, you maintain it, who else to be more accountable...Maybe the marina has an uninsured policy?

      We only went to two marinas between Grenada and Oz and didn’t get asked for proof of insurance. We did have to get short term liability to haul in Oz but this breakdown is up to our arrival here. Thanks for the comment!

    Great recap and a hell of a deal. How much would you spend on land in the
    uS with two kids, cars, gas, insurance, mortgage, keeping up with the
    jonses, etc.

    • @sailing_scout
      @sailing_scout  День тому

      Thanks Lee! That depends on lots of factors, but for us, it’s safe to say we would have spent more than this…

    Good video! Question... If you don't have insurance for your vessel how do you get into marinas? I thought to enter a marina you are required to have, at the very least, liability insurance. Curious to know...

    • @sailing_scout
      @sailing_scout  День тому +1

      We only stopped at two marinas in this time period - one in Panama and one in Fiji. Both might have said on their website they required insurance, but neither actually asked us for it. We did get short term liability coverage in Australia to haul out, but didn’t get asked for that either. This breakdown is up to our arrival in Oz so we didn’t mention that. We aren’t making any recommendations about what others do wrt insurance - that’s an individual choice, just sharing our path. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching!

      @@sailing_scout fyi… we run a financial company owner.. ( and happen to be live-a-boards) we do quite a bit of boat insurance. Some is from people who are not allowed into a marina ( or country) In Asia. And then find closed doors.
      I understand Malaysia officers even refused boats. Indonesia marinas are appointed to clear in/out and you must at least have 3rd party cover and wreck removal. Singapore waters have a mandatory insurance requirement etc. We can mostly accept without survey and do basically any seaworthy boat for 1 year cover, and can cover a few countries at a time to help circumnavigators.

    I as well would like to know a little bit more about your thought of not having your boat insured. That seems to be very risky. Did you have a quote for insurance on your boat, My understanding is is pretty pricey and plus they dictate where you have to be due to hurricane weather and such.

    • @sailing_scout
      @sailing_scout  День тому

      We absolutely looked at it. Considering what it did and didn’t cover, the deductible, and where it did and didn’t allow us to go, we decided against it. Not advocating that decision for others - it depends on many factors. We may well get a policy in the future, just didn’t for this time period. Thanks for watching!

    I often wonder how families are dealing with having to pay the skyrocketing cost of food for their families and I see that it is no different and probably more difficult in many ways in less populated remote locations. Four years ago the inflation rate in the USA was 1.4% and that skyrocketed to over 9%, and the cumulative inflation in the past 3.5 years has destroyed the finances of many families. Anyway, for many reasons, it is time for a change in who is controlling the USA!

      Some food items are subsidized in the we Pacific, but generally they were more expensive ‘apples to apples’ than back home. Not cheap for sure! Thanks for watching!

    I'm curious what your thoughts are on insurance. Certainly if the boat is not under a loan you have the option of simply risking the total loss of the boat , no harm, no foul. But what is your contingency if involved in an accident with another boat and you are at fault. Do you just keep a big pot of cash in savings for that, do a hit and run (kidding), or some other plan? I've certainly seen my fair share of accidents out here cruising from as simple as dragging anchor into another boat to full on collisions. You are right about marinas, and especially here in the US. Having just returned after a 4 year absence we are in complete shock over transient marina fees in the US!

      Insurance is an interesting topic and individual decision - meaning we aren’t advocating our approach, simply sharing our decision. We touch on this a couple different ways in the comments below, but ultimately, we’re comfortable being self insured for the time being. Thanks for watching!

    Surprised by the cost. Much higher than I would expect. Regarding insurance, there was a cat attached to a concrete dock, a worker started a fire, the cat caught fire and became a menace to navigation. They were treated to be charged some crazy amount, like 100K/day until it was removed. This was in Florida. I like the no insurance approach too.

    Good information. Some of these expenses would happen everyday even when not sailing ie groceries, restaurants. transportation, and marina fees if you owned a boat.

      Yeah - definitely could have been less. Still, divided by 4, that’s just over $50/week, and that includes booze out, so it can add up quick.

    Love to see a break down of the misc lol. We did something similar in our landlife and were quite surprised by the ‘other’ column being so much.

    • @sailing_scout
      @sailing_scout  День тому

      Yeah - I actually started to go down that path, and then decided 15 different categories was enough. The biggest chunk is clothes - about 25% of misc. Then home goods - just household stuff you’d buy on land or a boat. Then other smaller stuff. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

    That’s Bullshit on insurance you can’t get into any marina in Australia without Full insurance and not having public liability is insane. You will live to regret that one

    • @sailing_scout

      Different strokes for different folks. We may well get it again in the future, but when we looked at what it covered, the deductible, and where it did and didn’t allow us to go, we decided to self insure.

      It isn’t. Could be done more cheaply but there are also expensive boat whammies we were lucky enough to not hit in this period. Thanks for watching!
