Emily Defries Attorney, Broccoletti described his client as a mother figure who loved Anna. He showed photos of them together. The night before Anna died, Defries and Anna’s father, Brandon Bell, got engaged. Meanwhile, he said, Bell wrote in his journal that his daughter had bruises that neither day care providers nor the girl’s biological mother could explain and that happened when Defries wasn’t around. Broccoletti said the older sister had been violent to Anna, and they couldn’t sit together in the car. He said Bell and Defries had decided to take a weekend trip with Anna and leave the 8-year-old behind so she could not attack her younger sister.
“It takes a lot of force to break a kid’s skull” I’ve not been a child for many years, but I am pretty positive that it takes at least a few years for a skull to fuse, no?
At that age, your bones are basically still cartilage, and as an x-ray technician, I can tell you cartilage is a lot harder to “break” than bone. Cartilage has a lot of bend to it, bone doesn’t. Whenever a child around that age comes in with a Femur fracture, for example - it is policy for a hospitals staff to call CPS on the spot. Investigations are generally done before the family leaves with the child, as a simple fall won’t break a child’s Femur, generally speaking - that only occurs via extreme abuse. The skull is probably the 2nd hardest bone to break in a child’s body at that age, due to it not fully forming/calcifying yet. As a matter of fact, around 2 years old - a child doesn’t even have a fully developed nasal bone. Hope that answers your question.
The suture lines of a human skull won't fuse (close) until roughly the age of 25. A newborn's skull is highly pliable with large sutures to aid in moving through the birth canal. When it comes to skeletal remains, it's very, very rare finding a complete skull. Most of the skull is cartilage and soft bone until puberty.
Could be, but it was in the wee hours of the night, she was drinking, and walking alone from a bar, whether she had pepper spray or not, she was inebriated.

Too many unanswered questions. Emily is responsible for the safety of the children in the end. You don't let a child with behaviour issues be alone inside a house with a baby for 30 minutes.
True but the issue with the 8 year old didn't just occur that day. Her parents knew she had behavioral issues long before and should have done something about it sooner. Emily came in the midst of this child having problems.
Surely Emily should've been convicted of negligence, not 2nd degree murder- that's crazy to blame her when there's reasonable doubt she didn't do it herself.
I actually really feel like she didn’t kill his poor child. Not even sure neglect as the other child was NAPPING! How can u be guilty of neglect for being outside in the garden for few mins. But obviously since the history of the other child and her not keeping a tight eye on her, this may well change things!! Hopefully her conviction will be overturned and the child can get help! @@dot8209
Emily's negligence in the 30 minutes the two children were alone reflects back on Emily. I believe that is what the jury thought. Emily may not have even performed this killing. A really difficult decision for some
Jeez- what adult leaves children unattended for 5 HOURS?!?? I’m not trying to be awful, but how are you not changing baby’s diapers or helping w/ potty, serving snacks if not meals, providing activities, etc etc - I do not understand this at all. Also, was bio mom of baby also mom of 8YO? If so, this explains a lot. If not, we are missing a huge piece of this puzzle Edit: rewound; mom Heather is parent of both kids. Of course she’s going to rather blame the new fiancé over her own (sole remaining) child. I just hope the girl is not allowed around younger, or really any, kids, unsupervised, in the future. It may be the only thing that exonerates Emily, but I hope she’s able to get justice w/o any other children having to die Parents, keep an eye on your kids, and if you have a two-household family, or even if you don’t, consider therapy for your kids - mental health can be a problem in any family, and you never know whose lives might be saved.
Emily went to smoke, or was on the phone or soemthing and the 2 year old got killed by her older sister. Emily was slacking on the job, that cost her 20 years in prison. You would think Emily would’ve heard the baby crying if the 8 y/o did it but maybe the baby was unconscious for most of the beating and before she was shoved down the steps. The adults have seen her get violent with the baby before and the killing happened three days after Emily’s engagement to the girls father. Everything points the 8 y/o committing the crime and she should be held accountable for her actions. Emily could’ve been ruled out with a polygraph test.
a polygraph isn't admissible in court, they're unfortunately just not viewed as hard evidence! people try to mess with results by messing with their breathing patterns sometimes too or going into them off drugs! basically, i think at the time of the murder they let down that baby. if the eight year old is truly speculated of that therapists should have been drilling down on her and trying to get the truth out!!!
I feel so sorry for the loss of the child but I do not think that Emily Defries killed the child. I do believe the 8 year old had something to do with her sister's death..Such a sad story.
I can see that plain as day too. And she's evil enough she wants to harm another child, the older sister, by destroying her reputation as a sister-killer.
I mean I’m not saying I believe Emily is guilty - I really don’t know whether she is or not - but I def wouldn’t rule it out just bc it doesn’t make sense to murder your fiancé’s child. The truth is murders don’t always make sense and the people who commit them don’t always use the same logic as you or I would. I’ve seen far too many cases in which the perpetrator’s guilt is not in question but their motives, reasons, actions are nonsensical, counterintuitive and counterproductive. And unfortunately it’s not at all uncommon for people to murder the children of their fiance/spouse/significant other… But the reason they’re able to justify doing something so horrific, something that will surely result in the alienation of/excommunication from their partner (not to mention life in prison) once they’re found out, is that they generally expect they never will be.
That second case.. idk why they always have that guy on that tells “when someone is lying” he doesn’t seek truth. He is going to always find someone is lying..so bogus! Waste of money

@@kokoyaroanother case? Wanna compare numbers around the horrible things "men" do to children compared to women? You'll lose by a landslide I promise lol.
exactly I think its obvious the 8 yr old snapped during that nap time. One has 24 yrs with no signs of violence or abuse and the other has 8 yrs of nothing but outbursts of anger and violence enough for the father to actually give her a heads up warning before she's ever even met the child tell me that sounds normal cause I think her outbursts were far worse then they made it out to be on this show if his presumptive gfs have to get a special warning placard that comes before meeting his oldest daughter. But she's at least guilty of negligent homicide or some type of manslaughter cause regardless she was the one responsible and at least should have had a dam baby gate at the top and bottom of those stairs and any stairs or danger areas for a baby to be wondering around unsupervised. But I don't believe it falls under 2nd degree murder she received. I thought the law goes Guilty beyond reasonable doubt correct? Well everything that came out of that Jury Foreman's mouth was definition of Reasonable Doubt he even used that very word that he and other jurors had Doubt of her guilt well why not come back guilty on a lesser offense that more suits the crime instead of 1/2 time on the same 2nd degree murder charge. I thought that's how our legal system works isn't their an old saying in the Justice System “Better 10 guilty people go free then 1 innocent person wrongfully imprisoned“
I'm not sure what to believe. It's scary though that even if the child did it the adult would still be respondible. I had an experience babysitting sisters who were 2 and 4. The 4 year old shoved the 2 year old into a wall because she got mad that her baby sister wanted to help with some holiday decorating. No serious injuries but turned out older sis grew up to be troubled and pathologically hated younger sis over the years. An angry 8 year old could have harmed the baby.....scary and sad if this woman is really innocent.
This lady did not hurt that baby!!! I've seen explosive behaviors with my own autistic grandson who I'm raising. These kids are very capable of violence. Without proof of past violent behaviors perpetrated against children by this woman I don't believe for one minute she did it! I hope the truth comes out!
Yes however as a parent, you don't leave an autistic child alone with a 20 month old if you know the autistic child can have meltdowns and rage. It isn't fair on either child. And 30 minutes is insane 😮
I want to say one thing. When a woman gets engaged they take their position to a great higher level with the relationship. They become more controlling, more manipulative, more in charged, and more authoritative. I do know children that can be severely angry and destroying. I see both sides and I noticed the nod prior to being shown by the specialist pointing it out. Honestly don’t know what way I would choose. There was not enough evidence but as others say with that child history she should have been keeping better eye on the older sister.
30:00 I’ll stop here for a minute. An eight-year-old is completely capable of premeditation. They are 100% able to decide what they would like for dinner later or what they would like to do later that night or if they want to go to their friends later that week or if they don’t eight-year-olds are 100% capable of premeditation , especially when the eight year-old already had ill feelings toward the incoming stepmother.
The woman in the 2nd case deserves a new trial, 100% just based on the interview with the jury foreman. The foreman admitted, straight up, that he was not convinced that she committed murder, or that she was even the person who did the act she's accused of doing. That twenty-year sentence was a compromise sentence because he felt 'she was responsible' which is not 2nd-degree murder. That's not what the jury is instructed to do and it's clear reasonable doubt. Juries are terrifying.
Agree, she was just easy to blame. They cant fathom the idea of an 8yr old being aggressive or killing another child. Conviction was unfounded and not enough evidence on Emily to convict her for murder. Negligence, maybe. Murder, no.
eight year olds are absolutely capable of doing fatal harm. why the hell would she call 911 if she was the one responsible?! insane a child narcissist sociopath is walking free just for being upset about an engagement.
Why would she let an 8 year old hurt a younger child? If they knew she was violent then she would be watched continuously. sorry, not buying the young kid did it.
Guilty people call 911 all the time. I watch a lot of crime shows and some of the 911 calls are obviously so fake ( by the perpetrator). They are usually balling and wailing and overacting in order to sound believable.
That little girl took out her anger on her baby sister because her dad got engaged i think Emily is innocent the only thing she is guilty of is leaving them unsupervised knowing that the little girl can be violent.
Agree, lots of comments are saying why would she leave the kids unattended if older kid was violent. But just like them, Emily probably didnt think that a child could do this in the first place. She was convicted because she was a STEPmother, she was easy to convict based on feelings and opinions and the case was not even properly investigated. had been violent to Anna, and they couldn’t sit together in the car. He said Bell and Defries had decided to take a weekend trip with Anna and leave the 8-year-old behind so she could not attack her younger sister.
Very interesting, do you know if all of this was presented to the jury at trial?
That does answer my question, thank you so much!
@@CapsFanwrong my little brother when we were kids we were riding bikes not even fast he fell off his bike and broke his femur bone from 1 short fall
You are correct, not until the late teens does that happen!

As a native of Charlotte.....the comment about Central Avenue being "safe" is far from the truth. That side of town is completely crime-ridden and has been for over 40+ years! There are a multitude of reasons to not feel safe walking during the day! But walking alone at night!?!?! Suicidal!
An article I read in a Charlotte magazine said that the neighborhood had been significantly cleaned up as of a few years prior.
And no one makes rational decisions when they are drunk!
I was born and raised in Charlotte also and central Avenue has always been a bad part of town Especially no place for a woman to be walking at 2:30 in the morning.

YEAH BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN SHE IS RESPONSIBLE OF HOMICIDE.
Yeah but the baby was napping. Cmon you can’t monitor kids 24/7 she was outside in the garden for goodness sake!
@@dot8209
Idk i think there's too much reasonable doubt in the 2nd case.
Absolutely shes definitely innocent 😢
Someone has to be held responsible and you can’t hold an eight year old legally responsible, so they chose the easier route.
Emily's negligence in the 30 minutes the two children were alone reflects back on Emily. I believe that is what the jury thought. Emily may not have even performed this killing. A really difficult decision for some
It was more than 30 mins, she said the 8 year old had taken a nap and the time frame was about 5 hours
Then you charge her with negligence, not murder.
If not, we are missing a huge piece of this puzzle
Edit: rewound; mom Heather is parent of both kids. Of course she’s going to rather blame the new fiancé over her own (sole remaining) child. I just hope the girl is not allowed around younger, or really any, kids, unsupervised, in the future. It may be the only thing that exonerates Emily, but I hope she’s able to get justice w/o any other children having to die
Parents, keep an eye on your kids, and if you have a two-household family, or even if you don’t, consider therapy for your kids - mental health can be a problem in any family, and you never know whose lives might be saved.
Emily went to smoke, or was on the phone or soemthing and the 2 year old got killed by her older sister. Emily was slacking on the job, that cost her 20 years in prison. The inmates must be targeting her,.they don't care what happened, she got convicted. If you are going to baby sit make sure your not doing your personal things.

Maybe, but that’s probably a different charge than what she was tried and convicted of.

Gone are the days when you can safely walk home alone at night. Stay safe ladies as far as you are able.
Those days never existed…
Does a woman truly innately "want" to "walk home alone"? Or is she indoctrinated by liberal society to behave opposite her natural instincts?
Just 100 years ago women weren't going to bars to drink their common sense away let alone walk home alone after that
What does "stay safe" mean?
What solution do you propose?
Gone were the days? Those days were never here to begin with.... it's heart breaking. And it's not only women who need to stay safe and alert. Men are victims too. They might not be victims are far as sexual assault goes compared to women being sexual assault victims. But they're victimized by muggings/jumpings/physical attacks. The step mom was negligent for not watching them but with a clear history of violence I definitely think it’s possible the 8yr old is responsible
If the 8 year old did her little sister in she will most certainly do it again at some point. Step mum is guilty of not keeping a keen eye on both girls. For that she is guilty.
You can't keep your eyes on kids every single second of the day... Shes not guilty of that at all
Perfectly stated!
You're right, that she should have been keeping a closer eye on the kids. But if she's truly not the one that killed the poor little girl, then I don't think she deserves 20 years for neglect.
no she's only guilty of agreeing to take on a thankless job of being a step mom to a child that she was warned about. I'm not taking on misbehaved children that arent mine to live around my children

You just answered your own question
Anna Belle was about the own age of Emily’s son, as I recall them saying. That could make a potential stepparent especially envious.

One of these days, that 8 year old is going to admit what she did and I hope Emily sues the shit out of everyone!!
I think she feels guilt for letting the child sleep and not checking on her when sibling went in.
This lady did not hurt that baby!!! I've seen explosive behaviors with my own autistic grandson who I'm raising. These kids are very capable of violence. Without proof of past violent behaviors perpetrated against children by this woman I don't believe for one minute she did it! I hope the truth comes out!

Murder, no.
It might happen on a rare, rare occasion , but either the killer or her knew them.
