I remember coming home from high school HIGH as hell from smoking sticky green turning on MTV and Ode To My Family came on. Was completely hypnotized by the sheer beauty of her voice, lyrics, everything. Thank you Delores ☘️
One of the few stories where there's like no real internal drama. seem like they were all very mature, even handling the fact that she was the star of the band very well.
I was sick with pneumonia and mostly in bed for a week when Linger first aired on MTV in 1993 if I remember correctly. I was in middle school at the time and my favorite band was Candlebox. MTV consisted of Beavis & Butthead, Headbangers Ball, and nobody ever could have thought it would turn into the nightmare of Jersey Shore and TRL.
The awfulness of war (people killing each other) is so well and emotionally said with song Zombie! Makes me tear up almost every time I hear the original. I usually go for the Bad Wolves version because it has the anger factor to it.
My hometown band 🇮🇪 I remember Fergal (drums) 2-3 years ahead of me in school. Always lot of love here in Limerick for the Cranberries. Great video, as always, well researched. 'Zombie' was huge here in '94. 'Dreams' has become the unofficial anthem of the Limerick Hurling team.
I can't imagine anyone hearing that voice and not being instantly impressed. I was so sad when I heard of her death, knowing she had mental health problems. Just a very sad ending to a beautiful soul. RIP baby, you gave us everything, and took us on adventures in our minds.
@@Bigwhoopiedingdong Wow! That's a bit harsh, don't you think? Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. But your comment shows how little you respect other people. No need to be ugly about a simple statement I made.
I absolutely loved The Cranberries. I got to see them in concert November of 93' in Pensacola, FL when they were on tour with Duran Duran. To this day they're the loudest band I've ever had the privledge of seeing live. You felt the sound pounding like thunder in your chest, heavily vibrating your whole body, and everything sounded distorted and muffled between songs... Such an awesome performance!!! They had the audience on their feet the entire time, no dull moments. I was 7 mo's pregnant at the time trying my hardest to keep up. Unforgettable experience.
@123theprodigy5 I was 24. From the time my daughter was born and throughout her childhood, loud noise was very distressing to her. I can't help but think that concert was the reason... The intensity of sound and vibration was off the charts compared to anything I've ever experienced before or since, and she absolutely could hear and feel all of it at 32 weeks gestation. It was an incredible show that I'll never forget, but I've always felt bad about the impact I believe it had on my daughter for all those years. Of course, I would have never gone had I known there was even the possibility of it affecting her in a negative way.
The world was so ready for The Cranberries to return at the height of 90s era romaticism before she passed. If she had lived I believe they would have had a massive resurgence.
It was a great time for music. I never owned the Cranberries, but at the time I was listening to The Sundays, Slowdive, Mazzy Star, Sinead. An awesome era for female-fronted alternative rock.
Thank you. Great video. I'm a rocker who nevertheless loved the cranberries. Very sad end. I can't think of any better female vocalist, and the rest of the band provided the perfect frame to hang the vocals upon.
Thank you for this video. The Cranberries really had a sound and style of their own, but what stood out for me was the sincerity of the songs. While the grunge singers raged, Dolores O'Riordan was powerful and eloquent. She deserves to be remembered.
In the UK they were originally written off because a lot of the music press thought they were basically an Irish version of The Sundays as mentioned in the video. The Sundays were briefly a really big deal and so being what was deemed an obvious knock off made them unpopular. They don't sound that much alike but that's just the way our music press worked back then. Once you got passed a certain size, as they did after doing well in the US, then you sort of weren't in the same space as the music press and so being liked or disliked by them didn't matter anymore. At that point you were selling to the many people who didn't read the NME or Melody Maker so a band could ignore them. On the IRA bombing campaign at the time I was living in Manchester. The centre of the city got blown up (including my favorite record shop that I was in all the time). Became this was before mobile phones and I didn't have a house phone my parents were frantic because they knew someone had died and knew I hung around there all the time. I didn't phone them until a day or so later and my mum broke down on the phone.
When I was 17 I worked at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. One night a bus pulls up and all a few guys got out. I pumped the gas for them as it was a slow boring night and I pumped for folks in hopes of a little tip. Anyways they thanked me. Handed me a tape. Said it was their band. It was “everyone else is doing it”. This was probably 3 months before they really took off on MTV. I listened to it that night in the gas station and didn’t care for it. I gave it to my girlfriend. I wasn’t interested in anything but punk and grunge at the time. But I’ve come to love the first 2 albums as I’ve aged and softened. lol.
Dolores was the whole package that could make political statements with her band without being preachy and divisive. Shocking in this political climate, right?
Very suspicious death, the ‘died in the bath’ has been too common to have been a ‘natural’ death in my opinion. I love the Cranberries and Delores will live long in the heart.
It’s a little odd, but the fact that it’s common eliminates any suspicion. Sadly, she was intoxicated. For her tiny body, it wouldn’t take much to pass out
In 1996(?) I was on a tour of Ireland and every radio stations were playing the Cranberries, so sad that Dolores O'Riordan is no longer alive. Are the remaining guys in this band still performing gigs, writing songs, creating records/ c.d.'s ?

To go from Linger to Zombie is one hell of a swing, and both are damn good songs.
Agreed. I feel like I hear linger more than zombie on satellite radio
RIP Dolores. Hope you're in a better place now.

Linger is such a beautiful song, I can't understate that. It's timeless.

Knowing that she literally ripped up a million dollars to put that statement out there makes me love it even more
"Haunting voice" is pretty accurate. I've never been a huge fan of the band but her voice was just... Haunting.

Yes zombie is her swan song 🎵 let it linger she is very interesting and I wish she was still alive 😅

@ the fact it’s so “common” amongst celebrities of a certain fame makes it even more likely to be unnatural
