Walking these streets is an eye opener in many ways. Johannesburg has it's goodies and it's dirtiest ugly side. It is rated to be one of the biggest economies of Africa. So much leaves to be desired in this city. Let me take you around to all corners of the crazy streets where today I experienced this. #africa #travel #unbelievable

I was there in 2015, my friends drove me around the city and warned me not to look anyone in the eye or show my camera at intersections. We also went into a couple of shops and an Indian restaurant. I am a white Eastern European and I found the city and its people incredibly strange and dangerous. Like some crazy set for Star Wars.

I have nothing but respect for the many hardworking people. Good to see some pavements being repaired, it makes a difference. It may look chaotic but all those vendors and pedestrians have a purpose, selling, going to work, going home from work, doing the shopping. Nothing wrong with that! All major cities have their share of gangsters, nothing different in JHB. thanks

Don't know what you guys did to this city.Very unclean & dilapidated. I have been living in Germiston & know Joberg more than 10yrs ago but what i m watching now is way far from what i know that city. We Africans...so much into addiction of booze & sex so we let corruption be our way of life whenever we all have the chance.

I haven't been to Bree Street since the 1980's and I don't recognise anything in your video. I used to work in Jorissen Street in early 1980's, a company named Computer Sciences Ltd. I did my apprenticeship there, then the company later moved to Kramerville. I think they were eventually taken over by Plessey. I used to go with my friends to Hillbrow for nights out on the town. I hear it is a bit of a dodgy area these days. Just joined your channel and looking forward to watching more of your videos to see what I can remember 🙂

Always interesting to watch your walks. The city seems to be in rough shape but it's vibrant. I wouldn't say it looks safe for tourists yet but it's safe looking from your camera for now.
Videos like this remind me of extreme contrast to something like Tokyo. I walked there during night and felt safer than anywhere during daytime. Interesting how different it feels, how some people want to live in peace and harmony. And how some just don't care how they live

I can relate to that feeling. As I sit here in Tokyo, I find myself struggling with frustration over the upcoming move to Johannesburg. The thought of leaving this vibrant city and all it offers makes the transition even more challenging.

I met a South African girl from Johannesburg in Bangkok and she had the audacity to say that infrastructure here is better than Bangkok. The hell it is
South Africa is beautiful. There are great places around the country. Ballito, Umhlanga, Sandton City, CapeTown just to mention a few. U will love it period.
I have been to bangkok and Johannesburg infrastructure is better than bangkok.

So sad and difficult to understand. All those people that are destroying their own environment could just as easily make it a beautiful and welcoming place for everyone around the world. What a waste. Dumb.
They are mainly people trying to survive in a hard city. You can't blame them for the bad municipal services. They could litter less but that is such a superficial problem. Many of these people are supporting families in other countries and have a lot of pressure on them. Respect the fact that they doing an honest day's work

Many religions have the call to prayer. Islam has the Adhan, Christianity has the church bells, Capitalism has the music loudspeakers at every shop... We should tolerate each other's cultures, except we should not tolerate capitalism.
I have respect for churches all religious but that doesn't mean we should tolerate everything that comes with it especially when it involves people who are not in play. Some things should be revised and abolished. Anything that makes noise in a society is toxic..😞

You say it's fine if you are a tourist and don't carry valuables.... but who would want to even be a tourist in this place? I'm sure most of the people are great but what else is there aside from rubbish and squalor?

But I got to give tips on how to navigate places as such.
Cairo is worse too but tourists go there aswell and crime is high aswell but it’s only scams basically happening and pick pocketing. Sad thing with joburg is being mugged which can traumatise

I grew up in JHB 60 years ago and there were always some scruffy and dodgy areas. Watch Walk Africa's videos of the better suburbs, like Rosebank, the CBD is just a relatively small part of JHB which is really enormous now!

Durban beachfront, Capetown, Pretoria suburbs, Soweto, most of the old "townships" are now lovely suburbs. Not to mention the vast national parks and stunning scenery all over the entire country.
