I started reading tarot two years ago just for myself exclusively for therapeutic and spiritual reasons. I'm not a professional reader. But I hope I can be one someday. I noticed I got caught up in the deck-buying frenzy on tarot tube. I watched my first videos from the Hermit's Cave channel. The guy with tarot museum. Haha. I realized lately, I don't need many. Even though I have about 33 decks. Each deck has its own purpose for different reasons. I noticed I'm getting very powerful readings on very cheap simple decks, not fancy ones. Tarot is just the tool, we ARE the oracle. Yes, one deck is all we need.

    Thank you, thank you!
This video highly resonated with me. I totally agree with you that the ability to read and be intimate with Tarot is lost with the consumerism and consumption of buying pretty Tarot decks that multiplies by the hundreds every year.
I had like close to 75+ decks in Tarot and now down to 40+ and still in the process of decluttering a bunch more. I find myself going back to decks that have art and symbolism that are close to the Waite-Smith tradition!
This Tarot Deck buying obsession is like buying many pretty homes and not living in them. Kind of like collecting properties in a Monopoly board game by just paying rent. I also yearn to be intimate with Tarot again so I don't need to buy more, but get to know the ones that really resonate with me.
A great review and video! 🌟🌟🌟

i feel like i just sat down with a wise aunt.... deeply resonating. Ive been poking around "tarot-tube" for the first time and fascinated at the idea of trying to spread one's attention between many decks--not for me, but maybe if I were more immersed it would be more useful. But your description of having that deep and personal relationship with just one or two decks makes a whole lot of sense.
i'm an illustrator by trade, and i've collected ten tarot decks over the years. But most of them are the same to me as the art books i keep for reference, pretty inspiration and something to contemplate. Only two decks are actually in use for reading. Even between those two, just one stands out as my familiar companion who I turn to the most. Can't recall *all* those cards from memory just yet, but i'm close!
Thank you for sharing, I feel very warmed by your thoughtful outlook

Yes! When I think of Tarot the Morgan Greer IS Tarot to me. It was my first Tarot deck. My first love.. ❤️. Definitely can see all 78. My father was recently visiting and I found him gazing at my collection with huge eyes. I thought he would tell me to stay away from such things or or scold me for owning SO MANY. Instead he picked up Morgan Greer and said “Ah..Morgan Greer...that was my deck.” 😊

I've been reading and studying Tarot since the late 70's/early 80's. My first deck was RWS and my second was the Thoth. These two decks went everywhere with me. The RWS was for basic readings. The Thoth was for more spiritual readings. They were sacred and magical to me. Then slowly I started adding decks like The Motherpeace, Aquarian Tarot, Goddess Tarot and put my original two away for safe keeping. Jump way ahead to 2012 I found YT and started collecting decks. I now have an overwhelming collection and miss the days when Tarot was sacred and magical. I love my collection, these decks are beautiful and all have something to teach but its not the same deep down visceral, mind expanding experience anymore.

I always admire people who can just get one deck and use it all the time. I will never be that person hahaha but I totally admire it! I know tarot system so intimately that I can picture now cards from many decks lol 😂 RWS and Thoth and Marseille can be flipped in my mind’s eye at any time :) Because I use so many different decks I can now call so many different images from many different decks. I find it so helpful to expand on interpretations and just not to get “bored” :) I’m one of the people who loves art so much and I love tarot for tarot but 50% of my love for tarot is the love for art :) So I totally agree with you- to read tarot - you need to know the system and know tarot, and learn symbolic language and know how to use it. Learn the system and then you can swim :)

You work with and review many decks, which is why you can picture them. Your occupation is full time card reader, yes? This is what I am speaking to, an intimate relationship not encyclopedic knowledge. 🙂

@@MaryGraceFahrun I know what you are talking about! In my opinion it is possible to have that kind of intimate relationship with many decks. I have it because as you mentioned- I have been working with and using decks every day for years. I think when we start learning tarot it is really great to focus on one deck and the system; get to know it, but later on...I say swim :) It's my personal opinion and experience. Each to their own but there's something special with creating a relationship with a deck in the way of working with it for a long period of time. It is very profound and I totally agree, that the decks give deeper readings this way most of the times anyway.

I began this process a week ago by publicly reviewing my tarot shelf & feeling overwhelmed for months with too many decks. First round I chose 27 decks to release. The process will be on-going. I have more than enough decks. And I’m so glad to have discovered intimate relationships with many more than 3 or 4 decks. Every single day the cards are in hand & I discover so much about life, my own journey & the relationship others have with their own lives. I want to support depth by asking deep questions, by mentoring and walking my talk. Thank you for making this video.

I originally starting collecting decks for the beauty of it, then I developed a relationship with each of them and in my experience, is like working with a group of friends each really good at something specific with a unique point of view. Particularly when I do a multiple decks reading and similar cards show up in completely different decks, that wouldn’t otherwise repeat, like REALLY driving it home! After listening to the first part of your video, agreeing with you that really don’t NEED anything but a deck. For me, I feel that I’m in a quest for a perfect deck that does NOT exist and ultimately, depending on how bad I want it, creating my own tarot deck. For example I love my world mythology decks but there’s always something wrong, The New Mythic is just pictorially ugly and the size and finish makes it very slippery for me. Each deck has always a couple of things that for one reason or another I can not tie myself to just the one deck, so I’m constantly rotating my deck use.

I really do believe every tarot reader should start either with marselle or rider waite. When I started my journey with the tarot I heard the awesome advice: learn marselle and you'll be able to read anything, cartomancy, tarot, anything. I love having different decks, I see no problem with it, but I do agree with you: tarot has become a consumerist's dream (or nightmare), some have so many decks but don't even know how to read the cards...

It so interesting to hear different perspectives on tarot and reading and what makes people happy! I hear your points and am going to think about them more.
The only other thing I wanted to mention is that I've heard multiple people of colour (and some white people) talk about how they couldn't connect to the original RWS when learning tarot, and they found that a modern deck or one with people of colour in it was much more helpful to their early journey. Of course, some of them eventually do like the RWS, while others never do. I just wanted to mention it because, as white people, we have that privilege when dealing with the "classic" decks that the figures all look like us, and we don't have that experience of alienation of facing yet another all white deck.
That isn't to say that the "classic" decks don't have a lot to offer in terms of symbology - I do think they are classics for reasons beyond just their age! - just that people's initial paths into tarot may look different for some important reasons.

This exact same thing hit me the last week!
Over the last 2 years, I went from a handful of decks. To over a hundred oracle and tarot.
I was so overwhelmed and the cards started to lose their meanings and felt abstract.
So this week, I bought a new meaty tarot book, and decided to REALLY get to know my working deck on a whole new level and renew our relationship.
The rest are being culled. Thank you for articulating what I’ve been feeling so well

You are so right. Without question. If that longing is still there then the buying isn't working! This has been on my mind a lot lately. I already knew the answer. I also feel scattered and distracted much of the time and part of it is because I'm always on the hunt and watching videos about tarot when, even though I practice it, I should be getting more intimate with one or two. It's about self-awareness and the buying is pulling me further away from that goal. Thank you for this video. BTW - I'm here from watching Dawn Michelle from Boho Tarot's channel. ❤️

I loved this video! I can completely relate. I grew up with the Universal Waite and never had the need for any other deck for years. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago when I was exposed to tarot collecting, and I have gone crazy since. As a lover of art and tarot, I couldn’t believe all the gorgeous decks that were available! And I wanted to try Marseille, then Thoth, then lenormand, then it was mass market decks, then indie decks, then the out of print lucky finds. Now I feel so overwhelmed and dissatisfied despite having a gorgeous collection. I also don’t necessarily see it stopping as long as artists keep creating meaningful and beautiful decks. I will say though that I’ve recently committed to reading the books and diving deeper into tarot, and I feel the connection returning. It’s a wonderful feeling. Morgan-Greer is one of my workhorse decks and is timeless. I know what you mean, to have a deep and intimate connection with a deck is worth everything.

    Hi Rue,
Thanks for sharing! I definitely relate in some ways to what you shared and expressed. In my case, I have come to realize that the acquiring of decks and switching back and forth and looking for “the next best tarot”, turned out to be my way of avoiding actually facing the tarot and properly learning how to read them! It was my hesitation and procrastination mechanism! It really side tracked me. After 10 years, I don’t really have confidence reading that tarot! I have finally stripped back my collection to a few traditional decks and I am working on focusing and learning how to ACTUALLY read the cards. Facing them head on!

This resonates so much! I bought the Mythic tarot as a teenager in the 90's. Somewhere along the line I also picked up the Ancenstral Path - and that was it until I found tarot on UA-cam 2 or 3 years ago. Whilst my collection is still small compared to many on here, I have a ridiculous amount. And I certainly couldn't picture ever card of any of them.
I recently found myself trying to pick a selection of decks to use for Autumn, as a way to feel like I am able to use more of them (lockdown caused me to welcome quite a few new decks in a short space of time). But this has me pondering if I could just pick one? One deck to focus on through the season, to really get to know. Am I strong enough? I definitely feel able to have a culling, as one advantage of going through a collection phase I think is that it helped me learn & refine what works for me and what doesn't. Sometimes I think you need to overdo it in order to have that moment of clarity and be able to draw back.
Thank you, this has given me lots to think about! 😊

I've always tought of it as a learning deck, not a life long friend deck. So now that I can remember the basic meaning of each card, I'm looking for this connection, somehow convinced it's not going to be with one of the fashionable themed ones, but a more classical RWS-ish deck, but not Pam's one. Still looking.

Ooooooo we get a glimpse of puppy!!!!! 🤎🤎🤎. You make some really good points here, Grace. My first deck was the Motherpeace which I got in Cambridge Mass in the early 80s.... it was my only deck for ten years..... the traditional RWS did not appeal to me because it wasn’t representational.... after ten years of owning one deck I gradually added a deck here and there.... but very slowly so I did get to know the decks well. About eight or ten years ago I decided to devote myself to really really learning Tarot and for that I decided I needed to go with a traditional deck so I bought the Radiant Waite..... I pulled one or more cards from that deck everyday for one year.... ( I missed about five days due to travel ) but I learned that deck in a deep deep way.... and yes say a card and I can picture it..... a year or so later I came across the Gaian deck and used that almost exclusively for a year and then a couple years later around 2015 I added in the Tarot de St Croix.... all three of these decks I can picture each card..... I really know these decks, as you say, intimately. I couldn’t help thinking as you kept using the term knowing your deck intimately that when one is promiscuous one cannot be intimate..... I don’t use that term pejoratively.... but if you have 100 decks even if you read everyday ..... there’s only so much time you have to spend with each deck over the course of a year...... from 1983-2013 I probably had ten decks..... and then my god all hell broke loose from 2015-2018!!!! I’ve slowed down in my acquisitions over the past year or so.... but seriously i became totally promiscuous!!!!! But even with as many decks as I have I always seem to fall back to RWS, Gaian, Tarot de St Croix.... and the Sasuraibito .... in the spring I get called to the Aquarian and in the summer Morgan Greer..... but really the rest could go. Good food for thought here!

For me, the Rider Waite Smith is the Rosetta Stone of tarot. It is a system by which so many others decks rely. I do like seeing various decks inspired by that system, and many enhance the meanings in the system from their differing perspectives, but as to need, once you know the system, you don't even need the cards...a random 0 to 78 number generator will do. I even have a set of dice for that. I think there is sort of a sense of tactile joy to handle and look at the images on cards. And while I keep accumulating decks to review for my channel, I find that I fall back to one or two for readings, the ones with which I am most familiar. Since I created my own deck, if I had to choose one, that would probably be the one. My connection with it comes from the depths of my own psyche. But it's still based on a traditional system. It just has my own connection with it. I still want to encourage everyone at one time or another, to create your own deck. It is such an eye-opening learning experience.

I love art and color palettes so much too. My point is : I agree to some extent . I think 50 is a good numer to stop or sell some before getting new ones❤🔮

Morgan Greer for over 10 years was my only deck. Then took a Tarot course and was given an Original Rider Waite Smith and an Ancient Egyptian. That was it for me for the next 10 years. RWS was my study deck. MG and AE my readers. I was happy with that. Got a few more over the years that was it. Since January I shopped for emotional reasons and coming up for air now looking at the mountain I bought and am disgusted with myself. I'm also purging and would love to get back to just those 3 decks. It likely won't happen this time around but at least I've started the journey.

yes, we were learning around the same time, i believe (1980's). i thought a person should only have one deck at a time...for 30 years. when i found youtube it was a real eye-opener. i did the same as you and purchased a bunch of decks over the last couple of years. then, i put a bunch of them away. thanks to you, i repurchased the morgan greer.. i like having it and will probably, along with many others, give to my daughter or granddaughter. i have a few play lists which have the decks i use, the decks i own, but will not use and decks i've gotten rid of over the years. i have 9 decks that i read with (a few of which are just oracle decks that i'll use to pull and extra card here and there). surprisingly, they are mostly pip decks. ahhhh, the mythic tarot was the very first deck i learned to read back in either 1986 or 1987 and those images are imprinted on my brain. i repurchased 2 vintage versions of that deck, but am not reading with it. i enjoy having it so i can, again, pass it along. i'm glad i went through all of those decks. truly. it was fun and i learned a lot about what is available and what i really want. i think that being a good reader is subjective. i believe that it's important to stick with how you read. you develop your way of reading and you stick with it. my beginner deck was not traditional and i've been told that i'm a very good, concise, reader. so, it's subjective. one person's fantastic reader is another person's, well, not. i do not like the original artwork for any of the "traditional" systems. i'm just saying that these things are really very personal.

The timing of your video is spot on. I moved across country about 8 months ago. For the first 6 I didn’t really pick up my tarot. The last 2 months I have delved back into my practice. With that I have gotten bit by the bug of looking at tarot videos, decks etc. I draw a card each night. Last night I pulled the 7 of swords. To me it said that maybe I was wanting just to want. Then your video comes up. I don’t have a large collection of card but I do have maybe 30 between tarot and Oracle. I think it’s time to really look within and ask my self do I really need more?

Reading cards for 40 years and collected a lot of decks , but yes we keep on searching for more cards , looking for cards who gives us more. But the most we are connected to are the decks that speaks with our subconscious and RWS and based RWS will do that because we are used to those symbols. Then ofcourse the bs decks , the photoshop decks will do nothing for me 😉 just use what works for you❤️ loved the video 👌✨

Yes! I love this. Longing is a great word. I’ve been reading with Morgan Greer since the early 80’s. The last ten years have been a glut of decks, and an odd dissatisfaction. You nailed it. I long for the time it was just me and my MG.

I read with the Thoth for fifteen years or so and discovered tarot tube when I was seeking a new deck to use. And I got swept up in all the beautiful options and bought a lot of decks. Too many! I’ve landed on Marseille and am going to focus on that system and begin the deep bond that comes from studying, practicing and reading with focus.

I hear what you're saying and completely agree that to a good reader all you need is one deck that you know well. Collecting decks is a different activity than reading tarot, while of course many people do both. I had decided to have a depth year this year as I felt my 20 decks were plenty (too many to use) but lockdown I slipped back into deck buying - and I'm delighted with my new decks - but I know I still have too many to use and some are just gathering dust. And some, if they disappeared, I'd not really notice.
My first deck was, ironically, not the one I bonded deeply with. Tarot of a Moon Garden which was my only deck for over 10 years, is pip based and when I discovered other decks it was like a light went on... oh that's why I didn't really GET it! I now focus on figurative pips. The deck that really turned me on to Tarot and helped me learn was the Gaian Tarot which is not traditional - but eventually I had to get a RWS deck (I have Centennial too) and start to map what I knew back against it and it is now foundational to my study and understanding of tarot even though I don't read with it. I usually read with close clones like Modern Witch or Lightseers. I enjoy studying different interpretations and looking at different versions of one card - but this could be done online without buying decks of course!

I keep telling myself that I’m going to do a depth year, but then the next shiny deck comes along. Thank you for your honesty about where you are in your tarot journey. I really know what you mean about “intimacy” as opposed to “playing the field”. How much do I want it? And am I willing to sacrifice for it? That’s what I keep asking myself,

Hi there, I am also starting out with tarot eventhough I bought two tarot decks almost 2 years ago. When I bought those decks I did not know anything at all about tarot. So I want to know how long will one deck laat you if you use it for ten years like you did. Did you use the same deck for ten years without the need to repurchase or replace the deck because of usage? I am a minimalist and I don't want to have more decks than is necessary. Thank you in advance and for making this video. It really helped me stay grounded and not buy anymore decks

Thank you for watching and thank you for taking the time to share in the comments. I have a Tarot deck I used I every day for over 20 years and it is still useable. It shows a lot of wear and I love it. I have a dear friend who has owned only one Tarot deck her whole life. It must be 40 years old. It looks 500 years old and some cards are missing a piece here and there but it is full of her energy and magic and thus, irreplaceable. I hope this inspires you. xo
