those stangs killed more cops than any car by far--they were touchy, one little mistake and they were in a spin--and being a little overpowered beer can once they went into a spin at 140 mph you were dead
The Ford Crown Victoria was a mainstay of police departments long before 1997, the LTD from 1976 to well into the 80's, and the Galaxie and Custom 500 from the early 1960's up to 1975, when Ford did away with the fleet Custom 500's and Ranch Wagons
I was a Member of a Car club back in the early 1970's, we used to go to the Wrecking yards to get Highway patrol car engines. They all went pretty good, we could get them for dirt cheap, But they wouldn't hold a candle to the Real high performance muscle cars of the late 1960's. a Hemi Cuda or 428 Cobra jet Mustang, would make any Police car look sick.
No cars from the '50's as promised? Drop the Taurus and put in a Hudson Hornet with the Twin-H engine. It set the standard for future cop cars. They were fast, comfortable, and were sturdy. I wondered about the scene with Ford LTD cars, but the announcer talking about Dodge. Other people mentioned the Inline-6 being shown when the Nova V8 was talked about. One thing that I got a kick out of was that in the early 1970's, San Bernardino had a regular, air cooled Volkswagen Beetle cop car that was painted black and white with a decal on each door, and all of the lights. They mostly used it for parking patrol, but they also used it to patrol on "Crusin' Night" on E street. The traffic was so heavy and slow that the Bug could keep up with it. I agree that the Crown Vic is number 1. The Chevy Nova cop cars had a special suspension, and they could really handle!

The Chevy Nova cop cars had a special suspension, and they could really handle!

seriously, the taurus as a police car, you must be smoking the same stuff the people that ordered them. laughable, i'm guessing you never discussed these choices with an actual officer group that had to use some of these jokes. you also show the little 6cyl engine in the nova. another point is the chevy caprice from 86 to 96, in 1993 the caprice was a completely different car than previous years, 93-96 was almost as good as the ford crown victoria. the cars listed that had a frame and body instead of unibody were actually the best and most reliable.
