I'm Dutch-England and a football supporter so I know all too well that the MH fans are animals and this royally pissed me off. Outside of the current political situation (with the two genocides, one of which we are bank-rolling), this is exactly the way English fans are treated. Also, Dutch football has a serious problem with violence, I had a season ticket in Nijmegen but stopped going after 20 games because it was just dangerous. I saw more trouble at nothing games than I have at derbies with my team and when playing against Millwall or Gillingham.

That is not the case here. Whatever else you can think of her, Halsema is generally a decent human being that opposes inflammatory rhetoric. She expressed something more nuanced and people immediately used her (badly chosen) words in a single sentence to spread a polarizing message that is very much removed from her usual style and intent. My guess is that she knows that trying to fight it would just give the extreme right more ammo against her and apologizing was the only ethical option for damage control available. On a side note: Mayor isn't a political position in the Netherlands. They're often ex-politicians, but they are hired, not chosen.

They can backpedal and apologize all they want now. The damage is already done. The initial pogrom story is still current in mainstream news media. Any apologies will take about another week to percolate to mainstream, but the story will be old by then and pretty much forgotten, so there’ll be no interest and no need to follow up with apologies.
