- Jeffrey Kripal - Chair in Philosophy & Religious Thought, Rice University / Philosopher / Author - Owning Our Own Divinity
Jeffrey holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, where he served as the Associate Dean of the School of Humanities (2019-2023) and chaired the Department of Religion for eight years.
We delve into the Archives of the Impossible - a project that he began in 2014 at Rice University that now holds over 1 million documents. We talk about his very profound out of body experience, the “great big magnet in the sky”, dreams, and our culture both informed and “broken down” by impossible events. We hear about Jeffrey’s thoughts on the trickery of the paranormal and the cultural placebo effect that is religion and our unwillingness to own our divinity. We visit belief v thought and revisit the discussion on the “third space”. The impossibility of translation of one type of consciousness to another … non human intelligence being perhaps us … being the mask … and the superhuman.
We recommend a listen to Diana Pasulka (ep 142), Werner Barkhuizen (ep 162), Scarlett Heinbuch (ep 164) and Mike Clelland (ep 176).

BELIEVE is reserved for people who dont have the experience. When you truly KNOW and experience something, you dont need to believe it anymore😎
It’s called GNOSIS. KNOWING 👽👁️👽
Great show and interview!!
Garry Nolan, Matthew Roberts, Diana Pasulka, Ryan Graves and now Jeffrey Kripal... not a bad guest list
Thank you so much for this! Love listening to Jeffrey. You just got a subscription! Keep up the great work.
I would guess that the experience of love and being in relationship while embodying a human life, is that which brings Jeffrey to wanting to remain “caught”. A deeply considered, thoughtful, heartfelt and inspiring discussion. Thank you both very much.❤
I love your shirt Jeffrey! Great interview.
Such a great conversation, thank you so much!!
i had the same experiences when i went on ayahuasca trips… now i KNOW who i really am because i am AWAKENED which is what i believe is the most important thing to humankind ❤
once we KNOW who we really are, which is our formless self thats temporarily inside this rubbersuit body, we are here because the formless us needs this physical body to experience this physical world… and the reason is to experience and grow… ultimately to experience and KNOW ‘love, gratitude, compassion etc.”❤
there are 2 ways to look at life 1) we are human beings seeking spirituality or 2) we are spiritual beings going thru a human being experience. once we understand the correct answer is (2) then we must ask ourselves the question - WHO AM I? and after KNOWING who we really are, and we are not this rubbersuit we call physical body, we will see that this world that we live in this lifetime is really a giant Virtual Reality ‘game’… and once we see that, all answers will come to us from within ❤
That's such a Kripal shirt.
Lastnight, I had a vivid dream, where a foot was standing on my back and it would tap when I asked the right question. It was very bizarre, but it turns out this also goes back to ancient history too.
39.40 - There seems to be a core of similarity rather than difference in near-death experiences....that is a matter of focus on the voluminous NDEs...
This is the first person I’ve listened to on any topic in the paranormal arena, who seems to land in pretty much exactly the place that I do. I appreciate how Jeff articulated his definition of belief/thinking. I’ve said it much like this as well, trying to explain to others, but I think he added a dimension to the definition that I’ve struggled to language.
Belief tends to limit both the perception and the processing of lived experience. It squeezes experience and filters it, limiting the possible avenues of consciousness and awareness that might stem from it otherwise. And yet, isn’t belief at the core of the human personality? Our beliefs about meaning of experience, even those formed pre-linguistically, pre-narrative mind, are what shape how we code and systematize our survival responses to our stream of ongoing experience, which IS our personality. We don’t appear to be able to exist as humans without beliefs. Or maybe we can? What kind of human would that be?
I liked the idea of sewing together some kind of quilt from wisdom threads. It reminds me of when I worked at Sonic and wondered how a burger of grill scrapings would be? Or making a shirt out of dryer lint? You know, the important questions.
if i may recommend an interview w Aaron Abke if you havent done so already ❤ he can clarify very well 🙏
It “Just happened,” to me , once. I was 26, and flung out of my body in the wee hours through my closet and through the roof into the Universe. I stopped at a wall of pulsating grey matter and a telepathic voice said I might not like what I see if I go forward. I hesitatedm and was flug back into my body. Guess I didn’t want to know the future.I would now, if that was the offer.
“...prefer to be caught...” sounds so much like a Bodhisattva🙏
yes, this world is one big giant classroom and when we fail certain classes, we will have to come back again, unfortunately 😂
So you apply different schools of thoughts
Is impossible what science can't explain
What is the impossible
What is it about quantum consciousness you don't understand, you platonic solid?
what is it about adding the word quantum to something that instantly turns it into bullshit?
Who made the rules of the game? Only God knows what is impossible, and he took the bitter pill of reincarnation amnesia long ago.
When no one has the precious,
and it never will be found,
you will see creation,
do gymnastics most profound.
Not really convinced about this…. Seems this guy has managed to carve out a career for himself whilst having no direct experience other than an episode of sleep paralysis… nothing supernatural about that. The rest….. stories from 3rd parties, all of whom are equally unverified other that he ‘believes them’….. hardly convincing
Trust...but Verify. Weirdness happens. The Strange/Phenomenon exist. Explore n' gather facts and data...coming from a fellow that's had peculiar/psychedelic/informative experiences/interaction...drugs and no drugs. Alternative realities(qualia and simulacra).
